also for use for ‘mooting’ (mock trials and debating legal principles in a formal or semi-formal setting). There are fourteen teaching spaces planned, considerably improving

Only one major design change has manifested itself from concept to construction and that is the planned extension of ‘The Street’ will not now go ahead. ISG were instructed to keep this part of the project off budget although the infrastructure will still be put in place should the funds become available in the future.

Kevin Rogers, a Senior Lecturer in Law from the St Albans site, almost immediately discussed the possibility to offer tours to current law students to “get them excited” about the move, perhaps in groups of 40 or so.

Project Manager James said that, “We haven’t had a great summer but the current schedule is to get the building watertight during November.” [Ed. I certainly had a hot and sunny summer in Hertfordshire]

A decision has still not been made over the future of the St Albans site but as there is a restrictive covenant in place, it can only

LettersRe: Ridgeview

Personally, I think [that] Ridgeview Lodge is one of the most friendliest places to live out of all three campuses.

As the students here, which I can proudly say are great friends of mine have wel-comed everyone here with open arms. [A] friendly environment, sociable commu-nal area and kitchen area combined with the laughs and greatness of the campus, I can’t express , how much I really like the facilities, the rooms are pretty much amazing and are very spacious and comfy [sic] to live in.

Enjoyable, friendly and outgoing - home from home.

Yours sincerely,‘Roomies at the Lodge’

Re: Ridgeview

When I first got to Ridgeview I did not know what to expect, I am a long way from home and I didn’t know anyone who came to Hertfordshire Uni so this was a whole new experience for me.

I walked into the reception area and ‘Hel-lo mate’ was the greeting from Steve the Security Officer, who registered me for my room in the ‘Big Brother’ house.

The irony is that because we are 3 - 4 miles away from the main campus we are actu-ally not being watched very closely at all.

The bus journey is a short 10 - 20 minute ride depending on traffic and the bus drivers are really helpful in the informa-tion that they impart on request.

The people here are friendly and the staff pleasant. We have even had the pleasure of playing a few friendly games of pool, and what’s best is it’s FREE, yes free! We also have table tennis and a room with a huge 42” television.

I really enjoy the relaxed at homely life at Ridgeview compared to the flats at ‘de Hav’ which is cramped and full of anti-social people who only loosen up when intoxicated.

I don’t know but to me to live at ‘de Hav’ is to live in isolation, maybe some people like their own company when watching TV but it’s nice to have someone to catch it with.

Yours sincerely,Hylton Ennis

A Comment from Security Steve:Students this term are the best yet at Ridgeview Lodge, all supportive of one another and all get on so well with each other. That is what it is like, one big happy family. Well done everybody.

be used for educational purposes. Melissa Newbury, a prominent member of the Law Faculty stated, “Developers normally get their way; they’ll probably end up as flats with a small art gallery in the basement [to appease the covenant].”

Despite the impressive facilities, I was a little concerned when I heard two law lecturers discussing their amusement over one of their colleagues losing most of their class to a parallel group due to her lecture delivery style; if that is true then perhaps we should have focussed on improving falling teaching standards before construction began.

New and returning students are being asked to join forces with existing Hatfield residents to create a safer community.

The Student Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, which originally covered just Salisbury Village, is being extended to the wider area of Hatfield in a bid to reduce the number of crimes against students, as well as build a stronger sense of community with previous residents.

In the past student housing has often fallen victim to thieves, frequently due to students not taking enough care with their security arrangements, so advice about safety is now on offer.

Councillor Lynne Sparks believes that the scheme, which works in partnership with the police and the university, will also go a long way to help improve relations and build up the reputation of the university. She says that, “the scheme was started to build a sense of community as there has previously been tension between students

and residents.”

It is often the belief that students do not respect the areas in which they live; the Student Neighbourhood Watch Scheme provides students the chance to prove otherwise.

Councillor Sparks says, “The aim is to build bridges and break down barriers. I would like to bring out the positive side of the university and encourage enough students to sign up so that we could have a student rep. and a long term resident rep. for each area. We could then arrange social events to get to know each other and bring everybody together.”

So far the scheme has received a positive response. Those already involved have taken the time to knock on the doors of student properties to ask if they wish to join up. Students appear enthusiastic towards this approach. If you would like to get involved and volunteer as a Neighbourhood Watch Buddy, please contact the Area Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator, Councillor Lynne Sparks. contactable on [email protected].

UnionTV goes live countrywide

Wednesday 20th October 2010 saw UnionTV broadcast nationwide from the media building located on College Lane as part of the annual Freshers’ TV event where student union based television stations link up and broadcast a twenty minute segment nationwide. Many Unions pre-record their segments but with UHSU going live the pressure was on.

Thom Palser, VP Communications and Media said “This event is always a fantastic opportunity to show the national student community what we are capable of. I am very proud of the team and very grateful to Howard Berry, without whom this would not be possible.”

Howard Berry, the Programme Leader for Film and TV gave up his own time to make sure any technical issues and insurance snags were covered. He said beforehand, “It’s nice to see students getting involved in a good extra-curricula activity”

Live presenters Tom & Serina enjoyed the experience and despite a few little snags such as Alaster Armitage-Brain forgetting the order of numbers in a countdown [Ed. Sorry Alaster but you made my day!]

The studio is equipped with Hollywood standard lighting and the event saw use of three cameras and a staff of over 15 to working in complete synchronisation to make the production a success.

Since last week, I have been to a board of governors development committee meeting. Worked with the university on our National Student Survey (NSS) results. Met with the head of policy to discuss the Browne Review, and the implications for the HE sector and Hertfordshire. I had a tour of the new Law Court Building, which will provide some lovely new teaching rooms for all of us. I also worked with Mark Russell, Yasmin and some students on collecting student opinions on assessment and feedback. I attended the first student council of the year with the rest of the team. I also met Andrew May, director of estates who talked me through their draft plan for the estates strategy. Whole day with the board of governors followed by my first full board.

visitors from the City of London University 1st XV, put up a hugely encouraging performance.

Outscored by 3 tries to 1 The Rags had the consolation of scoring the game’s best try by hard working flanker Emile Pronk, a digital media undergraduate from Stansted Montfichet.

Barnet Elizabethan product Will Pearpoint also kicked 2 penalties, but it was not enough to dampen the enthusiasm of the visitors, who were well served by South African No. 8 Corme Maritz and his fellow countryman, prop Dean Cusner. Yogesh Jalli, a product of Dartford Grammar School, was industrious in the visitors back row and he, together with flying winger Usman Khan, were rewarded for their efforts with well-taken tries. West-Countryman Max Dawe, a controlling influence at outside half, popped over two touchline conversions to give the visitors the spoils.

Nevertheless the University of Hertfordshire outfit – who only had 11 players to call on just 20 minutes before

the kick off - can take many positives from this defeat.

Miles Bryan was a powerful centre and in Martin Keyworth, John Parnell and John Kennedy they had the game’s gutsiest performers. Well led by skipper Craig Cudmore, ably supported by Mike Hart and Richard Mott, they ripped into the visitors with gusto from the off.

Urged on by a large and vociferous crowd, they led 8-7 with less than ten minutes of the match remaining. Ultimately their gallant efforts were not enough but all concerned agree there is much to build on for the remainder of the season, and in physiotherapy student Ash Page the students had the game’s smallest player with the biggest heart.

Page’s running from the heart of defence, his courageous tackling and his never say die attitude deservedly resulted in him picking up the man of the match award.Round 2 of the BUCS championship sees the 1st XV host UC London, with The Rags on the road to Canterbury Christchurch University. This week will also see the debut performance of the UH Women’s side who take on Kent University at Welwyn RFC.

Both teams were optimistic however with only six hours pre season training behind a totally new squad from last year, everyone knew the games would be tough!

UH Mens 2nd ...started off well going bucket for bucket in a fast paced game. Things looked good at the end of the first but patience started

to dwindle and cracks started to show in what was a strong effort. The game began to slide away from them and in the end the result was a heavy one!

UH Mens 1stAfter the seemingly endless drive we arrived in Chichester with high hopes! We have a strong talented Squad but it’s all about working together to get that win! We started strong going in at the end of the first 19 - 15 down, however the second quarter was a different story. We lost our way and ended up on a heavy beating and so the by half time we were down 47 - 26.

The UniVerse, 11th October 2010

PRE-SEASON optimism turned into early season realism as both the University of Hertfordshire’s 1st and 2nd XVs were defeated on the opening day of the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) rugby championship.

The 1st XV which included Elliott Watkins - who had made a favourable impression at Championship outfit Esher RFC before returning to university - went down to a surprise away defeat at the hands of the London School of Economics.

There were some notable absentees from the visitors’ starting line up - including club captain Brett McNamee, Hertford RFC winger Michael Allan and rangy lock forward Martin Day - but the Hatfield side were no match for the well-drilled

city boys, who dominated the early exchanges.

An early try by LSE fly half Tony Phillips converted by the mercurial Victor Price, playing at centre for the home side, was soon followed by a further crossover from the speedy John Loveys, just before the break.

Despite some early second half promise from the visitors, where flanker Latham and lock forward Cooper were much to the fore, the home side proved difficult to breach and were much tougher and more committed at the breakdown area. Jackie Bamsey, a fiery post graduate student from Connaught led by example for LSE and in Welshman David John Owen, from Pontrhydyfen, they had the game’s classiest player.

In a largely one sided encounter, further tries by Owen and debutant winger Ken

“Matey” Thomas sealed the home win, leaving the visitors to lick their wounds on the trip back to Hertfordshire, where they will need to regroup and devise a plan, under coach Sam Carpenter, to turn around a season that had promised so much.

Reflecting on such a disappointing opening performance Carpenter said: “We were never at the races. We came off second best in most of the contact areas and worryingly, showed a lack of nous in breaking down the opposition defence. There’s no doubt that we have a mountain to climb but I am confident that with the returning injured players, we can still turn this season around and successfully deliver on our pre season goals.”
