The three-day long “59

th All India English Teachers’ Conference” organized under the joint

aegis of Rajasthan Technical University, Kota (Rajasthan) and the Association for English

Studies of India was inaugurated on Friday, 19 December 2014 at 10:30 by Prof. Hari Mohan

Prasad, President of the Conference. Prof. N.S. Vyas, Hon’ble Vice- Chancellor of Rajasthan

Technical University and Chairman of the inaugural session, welcomed the delegates. Around

350 participants from all over India had registered themselves for attending this gala gathering.

The conference was inaugurated with the lighting of the lamp before the idol of Maa Saraswati,

the goddess of learning. Prof. Rajesh K. Lidiya, Organizing Secretary of the Conference,

introduced the theme of the conference, ‘World Literatures,’ and read out the detailed schedule

of the three- day event.

Giving the key note address at the inaugural session, Prof. Avadhesh Kumar Singh, Director,

School for Translation Studies, IGNOU, underlined that the Hindi word ‘Vishva’ bears a more

comprehensive connotation vis-à-vis the English word ‘World.’ Hence, World Literature is like a

pious temple that is being steadily built by the individual contributors and by the literati of

various countries. Only those works that stand the test of time remain while the rest are washed

away. He was elaborating on the topic, ‘Where India Stands in World Literature?’

Chairing the inaugural session, Prof. N.S. Vyas, Vice-Chancellor of the University stressed the

significance of English in professional education. Prof. Rajul Bhargava, Guest of Honour and

former HOD, Department of English, University of Rajasthan mentioned that while earlier only

British Literature was taught in the syllabi of English literature, but now the literatures written in

English, or translated into English, have also been incorporated.

After the tea break, two plenary and eight technical sessions were held at various venues of the

auditorium and RTU campus.

The Conference president, Prof. Hari Mohan Prasad, in his address said that today the non-

European countries were speaking English while Britain was listening. English is doing a

yeoman’s service by dispelling the darkness of misconceptions about the so-called backwardness

of African countries and the Indian sub-continent. Prof. Parmanand Jha, Chairman, Association

for English Studies of India, said that the term ‘literature’ is singular. It refers to the treasure of

knowledge collected down the ages whereas the plural term ‘literatures’, refers to the

contemporary literature written in English or translated into English in African, Asian, Australian

or other non-European countries across the globe besides Britain. Hence, the Englishes of the

writers of these countries are bound to differ from Standard English.

Prof. N.P Kaushik, Pro Vice-Chancellor, RTU added that the students of today nurture a fear of

English. The Hindi medium students think that the language is too difficult. It is a clarion call for

the teachers of English to help students getting rid of this unwarranted fear. Another attraction of

the first day of the conference was the release of the 52nd

edition of the Indian Journal of

English Studies by the dignitaries on the dais. All the members on the dais appreciated the efforts

of the Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Binod Mishra.

On the second day, some 70 research papers were read by various scholars in eight technical

sessions. Prof. Pashupati Jha, Professor and Former Head, Department of Humanities and Social

Sciences, IIT Roorkee, said that several Indian authors have penned worth reckoning literature in

English. Besides, translations of works in diverse Indian languages too, are available. They

should be given their due place in the syllabi of English literature. Advocating tribal and folk

literature, Prof. Hemendra Chandalia of Haryana Central University, said that fundamental

human instincts find expression in such literature. The roles of such people in the Indian freedom

struggle have been wonderfully depicted in their literature. Prof. Neerja A. Gupta deliberated on

the literature written by the authors of the third world. It gives a realistic picture of the underdogs

and marginalized sections of the society. On the second day, the elections for the various

positions of Association for English Studies of India were held and the new executive body was

formally announced. The third and last day of the conference also had plenary sessions and

some 60 delegates presented their papers in eight technical sessions during the pre-lunch

sessions.

The Valedictory session was held in the post-lunch session. Prof. J.S. Hudda, Professor,

Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak (Haryana) was the Chief Guest in the valedictory

session. He expressed his concern at the dwindling reading habit of the youth of today. The

credit goes to the popular literary figures like Shobha De and Chetan Bhagat to rediscover the

youth’s interest in literature. Although we do not deem the works of such popular writers to be

serious literature, yet we should abstain from brushing them aside. They too, should be given due

recognition considering their wide popularity. Prof. Hudda was pained to describe the sorry

situation of the sub-standard level of the TV serials that depict nothing but a glamorized world.

Only money talks in such serials. Money has legalized all the evils and sins of society. One who

trades in education is a hero. One who is successful in the professional world is a hero.

Prof. Pashupati Jha of Roorkee said that teachers of today, too, are imparting only examination

oriented education. Instead of spreading the light of knowledge and wisdom, they are dumping

merely information. ‘Vidya dadati vinayam’ (knowledge makes one modest) had been our

epigrammatic message, but this purpose is not fulfilled anywhere. Presiding over the valedictory

session, Prof. Rajeev Gupta, Director, University College of Engineering, appealed to the

students to attain proficiency in the language by speaking and reading more and more the

standard works of the English language.

Sanjay Chawla, media in-charge, read out the detailed report of the three day conference. Giving

his feedback Dr. Premchandran Keezoth of Kerala said that we feel as if we had been celebrating

English for three days. Dr. Kishor Kr. Das of Delhi University and Dr. Binod Mishra of IIT

(Patna) also described the conference to be a grand success. At the end, Prof. Rajesh K. Lidiya,

Local Secretary of the Conference, gave his vote of thanks to all participants and all those who

had lent their valuable support in making the three-day event a huge success.

Department coordinates activities to generate a healthy, research oriented environment in

institutions in Bellary and around.

About Bellary:

Bellary town is the district headquarters. There are several stories in circulation regarding the

origin of its name. As per one such story, it is believed that the name is connected with the defeat

and death of a demon king by name Bala who was harassing devakanyas and was slain by Indra.

This place came to be known as‘Bala-hari’ which, in due course of time, came to be known as ‘B

allari’ and spelt ‘Bellary’ or ’Ballari.’ This is a border town where a significant number of people

speak Telugu. There are 46 villages on the border of Andhra Pradesh.

The Govt. of India, at the time of formation of Andhra state, announced that with the exception

of Bellary taluk, all other taluks viz., Harpanahalli, Hadagali, Hospet, Kudligi, Sandur and

Siruguppa, which had large number of Kannada speaking people, should form part of the Mysore

state. However, it was only after Mr. Justice Lakshmi Shankar

Misra’s visit to Bellary and on his recommendations to the Governmen that

Bellary taluk had been merged with the then Mysore state. There is perfect harmony between Kan

nada and Telugu speaking people.

Connectivity:

The nearest railway station is Bellary and Guntakal. The nearest airports are Hubli, Hyderabad,

and Bengaluru. Many luxury buses are run between Ballari and other major cities of Karnataka.

Main theme: English Language and Literature in Twenty First Century: Emerging Trends

Dr A.P.J.Abdul Kalam rightly observed that the future belongs to all those societies which have

augmented knowledge in diverse areas in varying degrees. Once it was might which made way to

trade and ensuing economic power that shaped the hegemonic hierarchies in the world.

Communicative competence through linguistic and cultural components aided by cutting edge

technological progress extends identity, dominance and ultimate supremacy now. Today in the

second decade of Twenty first century, the picture is quite rosy as thousands of teachers and

lakhs of learners enjoy learning English language in a changed context, adapting themselves

admirably. In a way, linguistic competence is integral to communicative competence.

Literary studies in Twenty First century encompass a variety of alluring, inspiring areas like

quest for identity, gender discrimination and women studies, LGBT studies, ethnicity and

emancipation, transculturalism, eco-culture studies, literatures in translation and subaltern

studies. A finely evolving era beckons all lovers of literature, especially those who love Indian

English Literature.

Sub-themes include but not limited to the following:

1. Quest for Identity in Indian English Literature.

2. Issues of Subaltern, Dalit and Women in Indian English Literature.

3. Language that Changes the World.

4. Emerging Trends in Indian English Literature.

5. Region as Ethos in Indian English Literature.

6. Theories and Theorizing Literature through Indian English Literature.

7. Cultural Stratification and Cultural Life of Dalit and Adivasis.

8. English Language Teaching: Trends and Innovations.

Call for paper presentation: The requirements for the paper presentation sessions are as follows:

A 200 word abstract of the paper along with a brief bio-note must reach the Local Secretary,

Ballari by mail on or before 15th
