The Illinois Holocaust Museum &Education Center opened to thepublic on April 19, 2009. Morethan 12,000 guests from across

the country attended the ceremony heldin a tent on the grounds of the newfacility. President Bill Clinton andNobel Laureate Elie Wiesel, amongothers, spoke at the event.

More than just a celebration ofcompleting the new museum, the daymarked the fulfillment of a promise heldby the hundreds of leadership, staff,volunteers and dedicated communitymembers who pledged to uphold themuseum’s mission to remember the pastand transform the future.

Rainy weather did not keep the crowdsaway. Ninety buses shuttled guests to thesite where they were first treated to a

performance by Israeli hip-hop violinistMiri Ben Ari.

In addition to keynote speakers Wieseland President Clinton, the programfeatured Governor Pat Quinn; Sara J.Bloomfield, Director of the United StatesHolocaust Memorial Museum; Dr. Steven B. Nasatir, President of theJewish Federation of MetropolitanChicago; Museum Board President Sam Harris; Museum Executive DirectorRick Hirschhaut; Museum CampaignChair J.B. Pritzker; Skokie Mayor GeorgeVan Dusen; German Ambassador KlausScharioth and hate crime survivorSherialyn Byrdsong. Rabbi HermanSchaalman led an invocation and FatherJohn Pawlikowski closed the afternoonwith a special benediction.

The ceremony was enhanced by movingmessages from world leaders. PresidentBarack Obama, Israeli President ShimonPeres, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton,and Steven Spielberg sent congratulationsvia video. The Soul Children of Chicago,an inner-city youth choir, performedseveral numbers and Cantor StevenStoehr led a memorial hymn.

Remarks focused on the significance ofcreating the museum. Though a truecelebration, the event was tempered bythe seriousness of the museum’s missionand the ongoing need to provideeducation about the Holocaust, moderngenocides, and their implications for ourworld today.

Following the two-hour ceremony, the museum opened its doors to welcomethe first public guests. The day markedthe culmination of years of planning and hard work for many involved, but is just the beginning of a long future dedicated to educating andtransforming the lives of the thousands of visitors who will pass through themuseum doors each year. ■

I have been waitingfor a long time toshare these wordswith you. WheneverI had the opportunityto report to you, Iwould mention which

milestone we had reached in ourmarathon undertaking. After nearly adecade of planning and effort, we havearrived at the finish line. The IllinoisHolocaust Museum & EducationCenter is a reality.

For us, the Holocaust survivors, theopening of the museum marked aresounding victory, one in which wetake great pride and which, at the sametime, humbles us. That so many others

were willing to do so much to create thiswonderful museum means more than wecan express.

April 19 was just the beginning of anamazing new journey. Each day themuseum doors open to admit visitorsand students of all ages and back-grounds, and it is exciting. The exhibitspaces and galleries, passages andstairways, classrooms and event hallsare filled with people.

For the Holocaust survivors this is living proof that we have helped create a vibrant facility through which education can be carried out successfully.We fully intend to continue to play anactive role in conveying the universallessons of the Holocaust for as long as we can. But we are secure in the

knowledge that the museum will continue to share our experiences and teach what became of our families, ourcommunities, and our world to future generations, long after we can nolonger do so. We have entrusted this legacy, which the Illinois HolocaustMuseum & Education Center embodiesand perpetuates: Remember the Past,Transform the Future.

Just a few shortmonths ago, we joinedtogether to celebrate the momentous openingof the IllinoisHolocaust Museum & Education Center.

Since then, it has been remarkable towatch this institution come to life.Over 30,000 people of all ages andbackgrounds, faiths, and nationalitieshave streamed through our doors already. Through our dynamic exhibitions and innovative programs,our visitors have benefited from a

multitude of powerfully transformativeexperiences. We are giving voice to ourmission to teach the universal lessonsof the Holocaust to combat hatred, intolerance and genocide.

The following pages illustrate the joyand exultation of these opening weeks.Immediately after the grand opening, we launched an ambitious programmingschedule, and in the weeks ahead, ourprograms and community briefings willcontinue to advance our commitment to being a thought leader and real-timevoice on issues of intolerance andextremism affecting our world today.

Spring storms andcold temperaturesnotwithstanding, thishas been quite a sea-son. The gala dinnerwas our largest ever,

the opening was an enormous successand, most important, the museum isopen for business and attracting thousands of adult and student visitors.I walk through the museum and I amfilled with pride and gratitude. I watchsurvivors and their families stroll theKarkomi Permanent Exhibition galleries,

sharing stories and a few tears. Theypoint out artifacts that they have contributed and video testimony thatwill enable their stories to be rememberedforever. I watch children exploring thefascinating and imaginative MillerFamily Youth Exhibition, learning thatbeing an “upstander” is far better thanbeing a “bystander” in this challengingworld. I watch staff members who eat,sleep and breathe this museum, so dedicated are they to our mission. I seedonors simply overwhelmed with theknowledge that they have helped makethis museum happen.

My pride and my gratitude are unending. Thanks to all who havegiven of themselves to build this museum and education center. Maywe go from strength to strength, andmay this museum serve always as abeacon of light and inspiration to theworld. Stay with us…this is only the beginning.

The Illinois Holocaust Museum &Education Center Grand Openingevents kicked off on April 2 with aGala Fundraising Dinner held in ahuge tent on the museum grounds.Keynote speaker former Secretary of State Colin Powell addressed a record-breaking 2,700 guests, whotogether raised nearly $2 million tosupport museum operations.

Secretary Powell delivered a movingspeech dotted with humor discussing his youth in a culturally mixed neighborhood. That diverse back-ground was his ideal preparation for

a life of service to the United States,from his time leading troops in themilitary to working as Secretary ofState throughout the world, to his current work providing a better futurefor inner-city youth.

In a break with previous dinners, this Inaugural Gala did not honor anyselect individuals. Rather, the galacelebrated and honored all those whoworked together to create the newmuseum and education center.Museum Board Vice President Howard Swibel received a specialaward for his years of service and

devotion to the organization.

Legendary Chicago newsman Bill Kurtis emceed the evening. As storms rattled the tent, guestsviewed a video tour featuring architect Stanley Tigerman. The museum’s Inaugural Symposium,“Media and Legal Perspectives onGenocide Awareness and Prevention”was held on April 20, 2009 in themuseum’s Lillian & Larry GoodmanAuditorium. The first formal event following the museum’s public grandopening, the seminar attracted a widearray of students, scholars and membersof the public.

During the first session, moderated byBill Kurtis, panelists reviewed how the

media has covered genocide in the context of their generation, discussedcurrent challenges to reporting, andexplored opportunities to have animpact on one of the greatest moral andhumanitarian issues in today’s world.

The second session focused on the roleof the courts in prosecuting genocide.Moderator David Scheffer, UnitedStates Ambassador-at-Large for WarCrimes Issues during the ClintonAdministration, led the participants in

a wide-ranging discussion exploringrecent developments in tribunals occurring worldwide.

Following the panel discussion, guestsmoved to a luncheon in Museum Hallfeaturing keynote speaker AmbassadorStuart E. Eizenstat. Over more than three decades of public service in threeUnited States administrations, Eizenstathas become an expert on internationallaw and issues affecting Holocaust erarestitution. ■

Leaders of all faiths and denominationsgathered at the museum on April 17 for an Interfaith Leadership Breakfasthosted by the museum as part of thegrand opening events. More than 100guests attended the catered breakfast in Museum Hall. Leaders of several

different faiths guided the assembly in prayer. Eboo Patel, founder andExecutive Director of Chicago’sInterfaith Youth Corps, was the featuredspeaker. Patel was recently appointedby President Obama to the AdvisoryCouncil of the White House Office of

Faith-Based and NeighborhoodInitiatives, where he is working to real-ize the President’s priority of interfaithcooperation, and is the author of thebook, “Acts of Faith.” ■

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley heldhis annual Holocaust RemembranceDay at the newly opened museum onMay 5. Featuring activist SurvivorGerda Weisman Klein, the event wasattended by more than 300 guests,completely filling Museum Hall.Mayor Daley hosted more than 100high school students from throughout

the city. Following a moving presentation by Mrs. Klein, several students joined with survivors and rescuers in a candle lighting ceremony.

The eventful morning also includedtours and a special luncheon for thestudents involved. Although this wasthe first time Mayor Daley has takenthe event outside the city limits, he

announced during his remarks that heintends to continue the partnership with the museum in years to come. Mayor Daley’s Holocaust RemembranceDay proved to be an extraordinaryaddition to the museum’s openingevents. ■

Nearly 400 local women gathered atthe museum on April 28, 2009, for aspecial screening of the documentary“Blessed is the Match.” Hosted by themuseum’s Women’s LeadershipCommittee, the evening featured museum tours, hors d’oeuvres andwine, and a question-and-answer sessionwith filmmaker Roberta Grossman.

The film tells the story of HannahSenesh, a young Hungarian Jew who

escaped to Palestine at the start ofWorld War II. Trained by the Britishgovernment to run parachute missionsinto Yugoslavia to help save the Jews of Hungary, Senesh was arrested at the border, imprisoned, and tortured for refusing to divulge details of her missions. She was eventually executedby firing squad. Today, Hannah Seneshremains an Israeli national hero and her poetry is known worldwide. ■

The 2009 Leo & Antonia GershanovMemorial Student Arts & WritingContest Awards were presented onSunday, May 17. More than 600entries were submitted to this year’scontest from Illinois students in grades7 through 12, addressing the theme“Memory Keepers—Transform the Future.”

Approximately 170 students, theirfriends and family, and communitymembers, including contest sponsorsPeter and Ann Gershanov and SkokieMayor George Van Dusen, attendedthe awards event. Two dozen studentsreceived U.S. Savings Bonds for theirpoetry, short stories, artwork and musicalcompositions at the ceremony.

Sir Winton HonoredOn May 21, nearly 300 community members gathered at themuseum to honor the heroism of Sir Nicholas Winton, whosaved the lives of 669 Jewish Czech children on the eve ofWorld War II by sending them to safety in Great Britain.Among those present were Dr. Renata Laxova and Mrs.Marietta Ryba, two of the Winton Children. “I think it’s important that this place of remembrance and learning is here. Not only

because of what happened in Skokie three decades ago, but because it is in the

heartland of the country. We don’t want the only people remembering to be in

Washington and New York and Los Angeles. The heartland of America needs to

know the same thing. I was astonished by the beauty of the building, the power of

the artifacts, the oral histories, and the wonderful historical record. Even though I’ve

been to Yad Vashem three or four times and the museum in Washington twice, and

I was there when we opened one in New York City, and have toured the offices of the

Shoah Foundation, I still learned something in your place today. There is always more

to learn. It struck me as particularly significant that this will be one of the last, if not

the last museums to be built in the United States with the direct participation of

Survivors. Still, as long as this museum stands every person who enters its doors

will be enlightened and empowered by those direct memories.” ■
