The first echelon, consisting of units belonging to Headquarters and Service squadrons Twenty-four, has traveled the "long way home," taking the Panama Canal route from the Pacific. The second of the Croup's echelons bound for Cherry Point will arrive by the overland route, via El Toro. and will be under the command of Col. P. K. Smith. The present Commanding Officer the MAC. "Cowboy" Reese, of VMF-122. who was in- jured parachuting from au F4U Corsair ou April 25, near New Bern, is reported to be in very good con- dition at Camp Lejeune hospital. A number ol the p layers have a l ready exhi-bited splendid possibi l i t ies and with a l i t t le prac t ice the t eam should be able to offer some stiff competi t ion to all cha l lengers , i n - the-recent~Cherry Point swimming ami diving meet, in which the var i -ous t eams competed for the Com-manding Ceuera l ' s Cup, VMF-224 placed four th , missiug thi rd place by a bare one point. In view of the fact tha t only four s w i m m e r s par-t icipated in events which normal ly called for a twelve man team, and also the fac t tha t none of these par t ic ipa ted in the diving events, we feel tha t th i s is something of an accompl i shment . In the re lay event, the team establ ished what is believed to be a new record for Cherry Point .

Sam Willis was the br idge tender and his job is to open the d r a w on the span which connects More-head City and At lant ic Beach when signalled to do so by the sk ippe r s of boats pasa iug- through the In t ra -Coastal Waterway.

He sighted the fish j u s t as he quit gnawing the flesh f rom a chicken bone. It was a t r emendous school and the water was so c lear he could easily recognize them a s blues. What to do in o rder to catch some of the tish was a problem for only a moment . Bridge Tender Willis had a rod and reel but no lures for blues. So what did he do?

He ad jus ted oue of the chicken bones left over f rom lunch, on the shank of a hook and cas t it over-board. The t ide was runn ing s t rong so the effect Of t ro l l ing was crea ted as the chicken bone swished a long with the tide. The effect of a smal l bait fish was a l so presented and that is what a t t r ac t ed first one and then many more bluefish to the lure until the final score for Bridge Tender Willis was 72 fish and they weighed up to one and half pounds each.

The blues f rom which Sid Willis made such an excel lent catch were in the first school to show up in the Morehead City a r ea this year . Since then, however, school a f t e r school 'of the blues have been s ight-ed. especially nea r the Inlet , off Shackleford Banks and in Cape l ookou t Light. Every party of a n g l e r s going t ro l l ing since Bridge Tender Willis opened the season with an unusua l ca tch have brought in the b l u e s - and they have been ave rag ing a sood size.
