A New Look for UPIS
FINALLY THE LONG WAIT IS OVER! With the completion of the road‐widening project of the DPWH at the Katipunan Avenue, the UPIS students, faculty and parents in particular, and the riding public in general, can now heave a sigh of relief. The risks and difficulties of crossing Katipunan Ave‐nue going to the high school campus is now a thing in the past. The foot‐bridge over Katipunan Avenue con‐necting the K‐6 to the high school is now operational, giving students and faculty a safer and more convenient mobility to the high school campus. The construction of the new concrete fence with cyclone wires and topped with iron grills gives UPIS a new and modern looking frontage. It also gives UPIS a feeling of security, especially that two massive iron‐grilled gates have been installed to the entrance and exit doors.
For AY2009‐2010, the total population of UPIS is 1,116 students distributed over thirty seven (37) sections from K‐10. The following table, provided by the UPIS Deparment of Student Ser‐vices, shows the number of sections and enrollees by grade level. For the K‐2 levels, the average number of pupils per level is 100 more or less,
distributed over four sections. At grades 3‐6, the average number of students per level is more or less 90 plus, distributed over three sections. In high school, there is an increased number of students due to twelve lat‐eral entrants at Grade 7, including var‐sity scholars (VAAS) who passed the admission tests given last March 2009.

ONE OF THE MOST AWAITED EVENTS in the K‐2 Department is the Author’s Day, when children get to meet their favorite Filipino authors of various illustrated books. This is a yearly affair of the K‐2 where children and the au‐
thors get a chance to interact with each other. This year, the Author’s Day took place on September 4, featuring Nanoy Rafael, award‐winning author of “Naku, Nakuu, Nakuuu!” This is an exciting story about a child who is go‐ing to have a new sibling. To give life to the story, John Michael dela Paz, a student from the UP Col‐lege of Education and member of Ali‐taptap (an organization of storytellers for children), retold the story to the delight of the K‐2 pupils. Then, Nanoy gave the children a short talk about writing a storybook. He narrated how the story was made—from the draft to its final form. The kids were enthralled looking at the draft illustrations which Nanoy brought along for this event. A number of pupils asked many questions and
the author answered them delight‐fully. He ended his talk by giving some tips on how to write a storybook. The Author’s Day ended with the highly motivated children writing and illustrating their own picture books.

UPIS VARSITY Team, Patuloy sa Paglaban! Rhodora L. Formento
LAST AUGUST 29, 2009, UPIS wit‐nessed another earth‐saving activity by “the little hands” when 34 KAB
S c o u t s , t o g e t h e r with their f a t h e r s , held a p l a n t i n g activity at the UP Track Oval.
Prof. Armand Basug, concur‐rent head of the UP Diliman Task Force in Solid Waste Management and Art teacher of the CA‐EMA Department, led the said activity. Professor Basug gave a briefing before the actual plant‐ing to explain the importance and pur‐pose of the activity. He gave practical tips about planting which the KABs found very interesting and informa‐tive.
The planting lasted for more than an hour after which AKL April Hiwatig, together with Prof. Basug and the other Assistant Kawan Leaders, gave the children a tour of the garden.
The children had fun as they went around examining the varieties of plants and vegetables grown there. The planting activity was wrapped up through a game partici‐pated in by the different color groups. Pulahan won the wrap‐up game, but the best plot award was bagged by the color group Bughawan.
Indeed, the “GO GREEN” ac‐tivity gave the KABs the opportunity to experience the real meaning of the theme “Go Green!”. At the same time, it deepened the father and son bond‐ing through an environmental‐ aware‐ness activity.

May okoy at suka, sapin‐sapin, puto, suman, iba’t ibang klase ng pansit, tu‐ron, biko, bibingka, at marami pang iba.

Ruth Manalo at Bb.

UPIS Students Take the NCAE Ysabel C. Zuñiga
FOR THIS YEAR, the Department of Education conducted its National Ca‐reer Assessment Examination (NCAE) on the 26th of August, 2009 in various academic institutions, including UPIS. According to DepEd, this test is very crucial since it will help and guide graduating high school students in choosing the career they will pursue in college. One hundred twenty four (124) UPIS students took the examination. Some selected teachers from different schools, including four UPIS teachers, served as examiners for this test. Teachers from the Reedley Interna‐tional School conducted the examina‐
tion here at the UPIS, while our own teachers, Jaime Banjo Aquino, Diane Caluag, Selma Cortes, and Roselle Velasquez served as examiners in the National College for Business and Arts (NCBA). The NCAE test includes nine subtests: Reading Comprehension, Manipulative Skills, Mathematical Ability, Clinical Ability, Clerical Ability, Scientific Abil‐ity, Verbal Ability, Non Verbal Ability, and Entrepreneurial Skills. Whether or not the NCAE will help the students in discovering and deciding their career path remains to be seen.
REQUEST for DONATIONS
Everyone is still encouraged to give donations for the victims of the re‐cent typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng. One of the beneficiaries is Amihan (a peasant women organization), a partner NGO in the Community De‐velopment (elective) immersion. The first relief mission was held last October 10‐11, 2009. It was organ‐ized by the ComDev classes and KA officers. For details, please contact Ms. Joanne Manzano of the Social Stud‐ies Department.

‘Salimbal’ Rows its Way to Success Chad T. de Guzman and Leni C. dela Cruz
SEVERAL UPIS STUDENTS participated in the recent Leadership Camp, “Salimbal: Bayanihan, Sagwan sa Ma‐buting Patutunguhan,” last July 24 to 26, 2009. As a yearly activity facili‐tated by the Pamunuan ng Kamag‐aral (pKA), the Leadership Camp (LC) aimed to mold elected year‐level, organiza‐tion, and class officers and representa‐tives into nationalistic, nature‐loving, humane, and spiritually strong leaders. In two nights and two days, it served as a “training ground” for student offi‐cers to improve on their leadership skills and to create a concrete calendar of events for the club or organization they represent this year. In this year’s ‘Salimbal’, the expected head count of 171 went down to 120, with 93 students from UPIS 7‐10 and the remaining from 3‐6. Participants were representatives of the different homerooms, year‐levels, and co‐curricular organizations, as well
as volunteer students. The registration started at 4:30pm in front of the UPIS Multi‐Purpose Hall. The opening ceremonies were held at 6:30pm and talks on the Organizations of UPIS and Core Values, as well as the groupings for the partici‐pants were also done that night. The following day, other talks included topics like responsibilities of UPIS lead‐ers, financial management, and strate‐gic planning. In the middle of the symposia came the planning of the Calendar of Activities for SY2009‐2010, a tree planting activity held at the UPIS Or‐ganic Farm, batch presentations, and the most awaited amazing race. Every‐one had to take part in creating a quilt of commitments wherein each student wrote in a piece of paper his/her promises as leader after the LC is over. On the last day of Camp, TV host Bianca Gonzales talked about
time and stress management. The LC ended with an awarding ceremony, with each pKA member giving special awards to the groups they facilitated. Special awards were also given to the following winners: Yellow Team for the Amazing Race; White Team as best overall team; Jaime Mejia as the KA Kid; and Marianne Saising and Gon Bayani as best campers for 3‐6 and 7‐10, respectively. Overall, the pKA considered the LC a success for having executed most plans on schedule. In the ab‐sence of the KA 7‐10 adviser Ms. Ana‐Liza Ani who was ill, volunteer faculty assisted in facilitating the activities. Each participant was asked to answer an evaluation sheet, and almost all expressed satisfaction with the out‐come of the Camp, although they hoped that there could have been more activities and fewer symposia.

Promoting science awareness and advocat‐ing environmental protection are responsi‐bilities realized not only by the education sector but also by all sectors of society. The UPIS Department of Science is blessed with contributing efforts from various organiza‐tions in bringing meaningful science learn‐ing to the students. Global Kids’ Eclipse The Keio University of Japan and School on Internet (SOI) Asia jointly organized the Global Kids Eclipse 2009, an event where students from differ‐ent Asian countries simultaneously witnessed the longest total solar eclipse of the century through live internet broadcasts from Iwo Island in Japan on July 22. The project was aimed at promoting student interest in science and astronomy supporting the central theme of the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) 2009: “The Uni‐verse, Yours to Discover.” The Diliman Interactive Learning Center and the UP Astronomical Society served as the host venue and facilitator, respec‐tively, for the Philippine. After watch‐ing the entire coverage of the eclipse, the UP AstroSoc gave an introductory lecture to Astronomy. In the Philip‐pines, a partial eclipse was seen at around 9 to 12 in the morning. HELP Earth UPIS, through the Department of Sci‐ence had been working hand in hand with Trans‐Asia Oil and Energy Deve‐lopment Corporation, a PHINMA Com‐pany, as one of its partner schools. One of its programs, Harnessing En‐ergy Literacy for Planet Earth (HELP Earth) is a Corporate Social Responsi‐bility (CSR) initiative of Trans‐Asia. The program’s main objective is to educate the youth to make life better through energy conservation and efficient use of clean and renewable energy. Coin‐ciding with Trans‐Asia’s project is the Department’s ongoing development of instructional materials for the new science curriculum. Trans‐Asia offered its support to the department particu‐larly in the development of teaching materials on Energy. On August 26, a
turn‐over ceremony was held at the Science Concept Room for Trans‐Asia’s donation of two HELP Earth Multime‐dia Corners consist of TV sets, DVD Players, Energy Experiment Kits, DVDs, VCDs and books on energy and the environment. The ceremony was at‐tended by the UPIS EXECOM members, Science faculty, officers of the Science Club and Science Society and staff of Trans‐Asia including Dr. Francisco Vi‐ray, the company’s head and Mr. Fre‐derick Lopez, head of CSR. The said materials are now available to teach‐ers and students. One of these, the “ASEAN Quest”, an interactive com‐puter game, was featured in the Kilu‐sang Araling Panlipunan (KAP)’s cele‐bration of Linggo ng Kasaysayan. Trans‐Asia and the Department of Science meet regularly to sustain the project. National Science Club Month Presidential Proclamation No. 264 de‐clared September as the National Sci‐ence Club Month (NSCM). Every year during this month, the Philippines So‐ciety of Youth Science Clubs (PSYSC), in cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), con‐ducts activities to promote their thrust: Public Understanding of Sci‐ence, Technology and the Environ‐ment. The Science Club and Science Society, affiliates of the PSYSC, partici‐pated in some of the events. PSYSC Science Olympiad (PSO) The PSO is an interschool quiz show for elementary and high school stu‐dents. During the national eliminations on September 5 held at the Angelicum College, Quezon City, the UPIS elemen‐tary team with Unno Leonardo Lorenzo, Marco Barrientos and Jimuel Lara, ranked third in the National Capi‐tal Region, while the high school team with Mithi Kapayapaan Zamora, Ann Elizabeth Rollon and Marion Ivy Coro‐nel, ranked first. Both teams ranked fifth in the National Finals with over 200 schools per bracket participating nationwide. The finals was held at the Nido Fortified Science Discovery Cen‐
ter at the SM Mall of Asia where par‐ticipants got stranded on the night of September 26 because of the flood caused by typhoon Ondoy. DOST Poster Making Contest Simultaneously held with the PSO Na‐tional Eliminations on September 5 was the Poster Making Contest for students from Grades 3‐5. Still a part of IYA 2009, this event was sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology. The participants were given two hours to create a poster on the theme “The Universe, Yours to Discover”. Nina Marie Dela Torre was our representative in the contest. MathSciAKa The MathSciAka is an interschool com‐petition where participants are given experiments and workshops to test their wit and skills. UPIS teams con‐sisted of Unno Leonardo Lorenzo, Marco Barrientos, Jimuel Lara, Travis Argayosa and Rani Domingo for the Elementary Bracket; and Patrick Jo‐seph Diaz, Ma. Criza Calabon, Ma. Fatima Manuzon, Pauline Tiu and Ann Elizabeth Rollon for the High School Bracket. Both teams were awarded Overall Champion. The team members received medals and certificates of recognition. Agham 101 Agham 101 is a quarterly symposia initiated by the Science Society to pro‐vide an Alternative Science Learning Experience (ASLE) to students. The first symposium was held last September 17 at the Multipurpose Hall. Mr. Na‐thaniel A. Cruz, Deputy for Operations and Services of PAGASA and GMA 7’s weather forecaster, gave a very inter‐esting discussion on “Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal in the Philippines” where students learned about the dif‐ferent types of cyclones and their de‐velopment, and the system of naming typhoons and warning signals. Filipino: Wikang sinasalita ng Puso Michael E. dela Cerna
WIKANG FILIPINO, MABUHAY!
(continued from previous page) GSP, BSP and COCC who attended the symposium also learned about prepar‐edness before an approaching ty‐phoon. SciSoc members will enjoy more ASLE for the rest of the year with various topics on astronomy, marine science and the environment. Green is the New Gold Symposium and Exhibit 2009 The UP Mining, Metallurgical and Ma‐terials Engineering Association (UP 49ers) conducted the Green is the New Gold Symposium last September 22 at the Engineering Theater of the College of Engineering in UP Diliman. The
event focused on the growing con‐cerns of the mining, metallurgical and materials industries with the environ‐ment. Selected grade 9 students at‐tended the whole day career talk and symposium which featured successful alumni of the said engineering depart‐ment. 8th Philippine Robotics Olympiad (PRO) The dry run for the 8th PRO, a competi‐tion on Robotics Design open to all schools nationwide, was held on Au‐gust 8 at the Philippine Science High School while the preliminary and final judging was held last September 23
and 25 respectively at SM North EDSA Annex. The playing field for the junior high school, called the “Robot Match”, was an obstacle course to be followed by the robot created by the partici‐pants and designed to carry as many ping pong balls as possible to the base camp. For this year, UPIS entered two teams for the junior high school cate‐gory. Team A was composed of Kris‐tian Angelo Gabriel, Reonelle Maverick Abulon and Gerard Micah A. Balles‐teros. Team B was composed of Kevin S. Rodgers, Dan Jethro Pahit, and Rya Ducusin. Unfortunately, both teams did not qualify for the final judging.
