GREEN TEA AND POSSIBLE INTERACTIONS

Tea is the second most consumed beverage after water. Tea is traditional

beverage originally from china is the oldest, most popular, non - alcoholic,

caffeine containing beverage in the world. Green tea is made from the

leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis. This widely drunk across Asia. The

rates of cancer are much lower in Asia than other parts of the world. There

is several major cancer fighting substances in green tea. Some of these

include epigallocatechin-3-galatre, epictechin, epicatechin-3-sulfate, epigallocatechin. Along

with these there are also some possible interactions with green tea. If you are being treated with

these medications you should not drink green tea or green tea extracts. Green tea may inhibit the

action of the adenosine, a medication given in the hospital for an irregular heart rhythm. Green

tea may increase the effectiveness of beta-lactum antibiotics by reducing bacterial resistance to

treatment. People who take warfarin, a blood thinning medication, should not drink green tea

since green tea contains vitamin k, it can make warfarin ineffective. Meanwhile you should not

mix green tea and aspirin because the both prevent platelets from clotting, using the two may

increase your risk of bleeding. Both green and black tea extracts stimulating a gene in prostate

cancer cells that may cause them to less sensitive to chemotherapy drugs. When taken together

with ephedrine, green tea may cause agitation, tremors, insomnia, and weight loss. Green may

cause severe increase in blood pressure when taken together with MAOIs, which are used to treat

depression.

medication can help us safeguard our food supply. Good, for the most part, is no longer formed,

but mass-produced. But nature does not function as such. Nature functions as a web of diverse

interlinking overlapping & complex relationships, which do not run on a linear plane as found on

a factory floor. Zoopharmacognosy principles could save the farming industry billions of dollars.

When animals are given the option of self medicate, farmers will no longer have to give

antibiotics to all their animals, including the healthy ones, as they do now. Swine flu has become

endemic all over the world and we understand now how unhealthy animals can all too quickly

translate into unhealthy humans. There are many zoonotic diseases that may have been

prevented, had we understand more fully the implication of animal self-medication.

MIGRAINE AND HERBAL REMEDIES

Migraines are intense, sometimes debilitating headaches. The most common types of migraine

are those with aura (classical migraines) and those without aura (common migraines).Migraines

can begin in childhood or may not occur until early adulthood. Women are three times more

likely than men to have migraines. Family history is one of the most common risk factors for

having migraines.

Causes: Factors that may trigger a migraine include:brightlights, severe heat or other extremes in

weather, changes in barometric pressure, hormonal changes, such as estrogen fluctuations during

menstruation, pregnancy, menopause for women, drinking alcohol or caffeinated drinks. Foods

such as aged cheese, processed foods; consuming food additives, such as aspartame (an artificial

sugar) or monosodium glutamate (MSG),eating foods that have the additive tyramine, which is

found in soy products, fava beans, hard sausages, smoked fish, and Chianti wine. Excess stress,

loud sounds, skipping meals, loss of sleep, taking certain medicines, such as oral contraceptives

or nitroglycerin.

Symptoms: Food cravings, depression, fatigue or low energy, frequent yawning.

Herbes used in migrane: Passion flower used as a calming herb for such conditions as anxiety

and insomnia, passionflower can also be helpful in easing headaches for people of a certain

constitution. “As the name suggests, passionflower is good for people who get easily worked up

about life,” says Lawton. “For people who are very passionate, who get easily angered, this herb

calms the nervous system and makes them less likely to hold onto the headache.”Black cohosh is

native of North American, which has a history of being used for rheumatism, can be extremely

effective in treating headaches associated with what’s known as “black cloud depression.”

Because the herb has estrogen effects, it is better for women, but men can take it for short

periods as well.White willow bark, like other headache herbal remedies, relieves pain. But as an

analgesic, it masks the pain rather than addressing the underlying cause of the headache the way

other herbs do.

Nobody knows more about medications than Pharmacists do-not

doctors, not nurses and not anyone. Someone says that," those with right

to prescribe know far less about drug therapies than pharmacists, and

consumers need to make use of that knowledge. Mornings are the best

time to fill prescription; Like doctors, pharmacists especially those at

mom-and-pop shops, who don't have quotes to meet, are less likely to

make you wait for first thing in the morning. As Martin Ochalek, a

pharmacist in Miami, puts it, "Once the doctors calls start coming, it

slows down everything." The exception independent pharmacies. "Any time of day is a good time

to call in a prescription since they need the business", says Joey Jimenez, a former pharmacy tech

who specializes in compound drugs at total pharmacy supply. Another timesaving tip: call before

you go to confirm your prescription is ready for pick up. If it takes longer than 15 minutes, be

patient; Greeting the wrong prescription can have serious consequences, which is why it pays to be

patient. Time pressures can contribute to medication errors. The pharmacist does for more than

Doctor's handwriting really is that bad; that it can lead to mistakes- which are why pharmacists need

an extra step. Don’t wait until you’re out of medicine to order refills; doctors are busy people and

they’re the ones who hold the key to you getting a refill for your medication which is why it’s

important to give your pharmacist a few days to get an hold of them. Doctors don’t always call back

promptly, and it’s not automatic that you get a refill the same day. Let the pharmacist knows when

you have 5 or 6 pills left. This is especially true for maintenance drugs like blood pressure medicine

missing a day or waiting extensive periods of time between dosages can have harmful effects.Don’t

use the pharmacy checkout if you’re not picking up a prescription; We’ve all been there before, the

checkout line snakes into the aisles and you want to buy are a few toiletries. But resist the

temptation to pay at the pharmacy; while pharmacists are happy to help, it distracts them from the

important work they’re doing, which can lead to unintentional errors.

OBESITY AND ITS PHARMACOTHERAPY

Obesity is a global public health crisis. It is defined as excessive

accumulation of the body fat that may impair health. Obesity to be

related to increased risks of coronary heart disease, hypertension, non-

insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and certain types of cancer. The

genetic makeup plays a significant role in the chances of becoming

obese. Many synthetic drug therapies are available for the treatment of

obesity, but they are not devoid of side effects and not recommended for long term therapy. A

combination of amphetamine analogs, fenfluramine and phentermine, fen-phen’s effectiveness

helped to achieve extensive popularity in 1990s.Unfortunately it also caused pulmonary

hypertension and valvular heart disease. Phentermine and topiramate combination is also used in

management of obesity. Obesity treatments may include physical activity, changes in eating

behavior, pharmacotherapy, weight reducing medicinal plants, accupuncture etc. Anti-obesity

drugs may be taken to reduce appetite or inhibit for together with a suitable diet. There is an

urgent need of exploring all the available options to address the menace of this metabolic

disorder.

ANTICANCER DRUGS

Drugs used for the treatment of cancer known as cancer chemotherapy. A cancer is defined as

uncontrolled division of cells leading to a tumor formation. Cancer is the abnormal growth of

cells in our bodies that can lead to death. Several drugs used in cancer are cytotoxic drugs,

hormones and enzymes like L-Asparaginase. Plant derived agents are being used for the

treatment of cancer. The causes of cancer are smoking, dietary imbalance, hormones and their

chronic infection leading to chronic inflammation. The anticancer activity is the effect of natural

and synthetic or biological and chemical agents to reverse, suppress or prevent carcinogenic

progression. Plant derived compounds have an important source of several clinically useful

anticancer agents including taxol, vinblastine, vincristine, the camptothecin derivatives topotecan

and etoposide.

HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE: REALITY OR A PLACEBO

Homeopathy is the third most commonly used system of healing in the world and has been

practiced for more than two centuries, mainly because of its easy availability, low cost,

negligible side effects. But its acceptability is still on the borderline of reality and placebo.

Mainstream scientists treat it as an outcast, blaming the curing power as nothing but placebo

effect, even there is ample evidence of millions of people having been cured by homeopathy.

Some very interesting observations about this medicine system are the following:

a) Contrary to allopathic medicines, homeopathic medicines are said to be more potent at

higher dilutions.

b) A large number of homeopathy practitioners have their basic degree in allopathy, and

c) Even the most sceptic ones use homeopathy as regular basis.

Then why this step-motherly attitude to homeopathy? Perhaps the reason behind this is lack of

adequate research to explain how homeopathy really works. Also it is very subjective-the same

medicine for particular ailment may not work for two different persons; the personal history

matters a lot. However, the fact that these medicines are said to be active even at extreme

dilutions has drawn the specticism and curiosity of the scientists leading t the popular brief that

perhaps these medicines have only a placebo effect. One typical operation used in making of

homeopathic medicines is repeated shaking or „succession‟ of the solution of the drug in alcohol.

It has been found that such repeatedly shaken extremely dilute solutions or “very low molarity

repetitive successed diluted liquid” (VLMRSDL) of which a homeopathic medicine is an

example, has its properties modified significantly from the original liquid.We decided to study

how these drugs penetrate the membrane and whether there is any correlation of this penetration

with the potency of homeopathic drug. For this study we choose two homeopathic drugs such as

Aconitum napelles, Cuprum metallicum. Thus from the above observations it can be concluded

that homeopathic medicines are indeed more potent at higher dilutions because of the drug

dilutions because of the drug particles attaining the size in nano range, which then facilitates

their penetration through the cell membrane thereby enhancing the desired effect.

ZIKA VIRUS

Zika virus is an emerging mosquito-borne virus that was first

identified in Uganda in 1947 in rhesus monkeys through a

monitoring network of sylvatic yellow fever. It was

subsequently identified in humans in 1952 in Uganda and the

United Republic of Tanzania. Outbreaks of Zika virus disease

have been recorded in Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific.

Virus classification

Genre: Flavivirus Vector: Aedes mosquitoes (which usually bite during the morning and late

afternoon/evening hours) Reservoir: Unknown

Symptoms;can have no symptoms but people may experience, pain areas, in the back of, eyes,

joints or muscles,wholebody,fatique,fever,chillsalsocommon,eyeredness,headache,skin rash.

Transmission; Zika virus is transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito from

the Aedes genus, mainly Aedes aegypti in tropical regions. This is the same mosquito that

transmits dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever.

Diagnosis; Infection with Zika virus may be suspected based on symptoms and recent history

(e.g. residence or travel to an area where Zika virus is known to be present). Zika virus diagnosis

can only be confirmed by laboratory testing for the presence of Zika virus RNA in the blood or

other body fluids, such as urine or saliva.

Prevention; Mosquitoes and their breeding sites pose a significant risk factor for Zika virus

infection. Prevention and control relies on reducing mosquitoes through source reduction

(removal and modification of breeding sites) and reducing contact between mosquitoes and

people.Repellents should contain DEET (N, N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), IR3535 (3-[N-

acetyl-N-butyl]-aminopropionic acid ethyl ester) or icaridin (1-piperidinecarboxylic acid, 2-(2-

hydroxyethyl)-1-methylpropylester).

Treatment; Zika virus disease is usually relatively mild and requires no specific treatment.

People sick with Zika virus should get plenty of rest, drink enough fluids, and treat pain andfever

with common medicines. If symptoms worsen, they should seek medical care and advice. There

is currently no vaccine available.

SCREENING PREVENTS 70% OF CERVICAL CANCER DEATH

Screening for cervical cancer prevents 70% of deaths from the diseases, but this figure could be

as high as 83% if all eligible women had regular smear tests, according to new research by

cancer research UK. Around 800 women in England die from cervical cancer each year. The CR

UK study concludes that, without screening, an additional 1,827 more women would die from

the disease. However if all women aged from 25 to 64 were screened regularly. They also found

that the biggest impact of screening is among women aged between 50-64, where there would be

five times more deaths from the disease, & that there would be more than twice the no. of

cervical cancers diagnosed if there were no screening programme. Thousands of women in the

UK are alive & healthy today thanks to cervical screening. The programme already prevents

thousands of cancers each year & as it continues to improve by testing all samples for the human

papilloma virus (HPV) even more women are likely to avoid this disease.

Swine influenza, also called pig influenza, swine flu, hog flue and pig flue is an infection caused

by the any one of several types of swine influenza viruses. The swine flu was initially seen in the

humans in Mexico in 2009 where the stand of particular virus was a marriage of three types of

stands. Around the mid of 20th

century, identification of influenza subtypes become possible,

allowing accurate diagnosis of transmission to humans. Causes: Direct transmission of a swine

flu virus from the pigs to humans is occasionally possible (zoonotic swine flu). According to the

center for disease control and prevention, in humans the symptoms of the 2009 “swine flu” virus

are similar to those of influenza and of influenza like illness in general.Symptoms of swine flu in

human: Body ache, Cough, Sore throat, Fever, VomitingPreventionof swine flu: Wash your

hands with soap regularly, Get plenty of sleep, Eat a well-balanced diet, Drink plenty of liquids.

Treatment for swine flu: There are some drugs around that can effectively treat the swine flu

infections in human. Adamantanes (amantadine and remantadine), Inhibitor of influenza

neuraminidase.

ROBOTIC SURGERY Preetpal

Robotic surgery, computer-assisted surgery, and robotically

assisted surgery are terms for technological developments to use

robotic systems to aid in surgical procedures.Robotically-

assisted surgery was developed to overcome the limitations of

pre-existing minimally invasive surgical procedures and to

enhance the capabilities of surgeons performing open surgery. In

case of robotically-assisted minimally invasive surgery, instead of directly moving the

instruments, the surgeon uses of the two methods to control the instruments; either a direct

telemanipulator or through computer control. A telemanipulator is a remote manipulator that

allows the surgeon to perform the normal movements associated with the surgery whilst the

robotic arms carry out these movements using end effectors and manipulators to perform the

actual surgery on the patient. In computer controlled systems the surgeon uses a computer to

control the robotic arms and its end effectors, though these systems can also still use

telemanipulators for their input. One advantage of using the computerized method is that surgeon

does not have to be present, but can be anywhere in the world, leading to the possibility of the

remote surgery.The main objective of such smart instruments is to reduce or eliminate the tissue

trauma traditionally associated with open surgery without requiring more than a few minutes

training on the part of the surgeons.

GOVERNMENT BANNED NIMESULIDE OVER ADVERSE EFFECTS ON

LIVER.

“Nimesulide causes liver failure”.

The government has banned the Paediatric use of the common fever &

pain drug Nimesulide. For its adverse effects on the liver, in a much-

delayed move. The decision was taken by the union health ministry after

experts on the drug Technical Advisory Board recommended banning

the drug with five others. The ministry decided Nimesulide’s Paediatric formulation along with

cisapride, Phenylpropanolamine, human placenta extract & sibutramine& R-sibutramine.

Nimesulide causes liver failure, while cisapride, an anti-obesity drugs, is associated with

increased risks of Heart attacks.

Nothing is permanent. Don’t stress yourself too much because no matter how bad the situation

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

A widespread condition involving recurrent abdominal pain

and diarrhoea or constipation, often associated with stress,

depression, anxiety, or previous intestinal infection.

Symptoms

Symptoms include abdominal pain or discomfort and

changes in bowel habit (constipation, diarrhoea, or both), as

well as bloating. While some people have intermittent symptoms, for others the condition

difficult to treat.There are no investigations or tests that can confirm the presence of IBS, so it

should be considered in people who have had any of the following symptoms for six months or

more. Abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, change in bowel habit.

Causes of IBS

The cause of IBS and the pathophysiology of the symptoms are unknown but it is believed that

the normal digestive process is somehow altered and that there may be increased sensitivity of

the GI tract. While other causes such as gastroenteritis, antibiotics, inflammation and family

history have been proposed, there is no evidence to support any of them, but a number (stress,

antibiotics and gastroenteritis) are known to aggravate the condition.

Treatment

Treatment of IBS involves addressing the most predominant symptoms, which may involve

using a combination of drugs to keep those symptoms under control.Stomach pain caused by

muscle spasms, for example, can be treated with antispasmodics such as peppermint oil, alverine

citrate or mebeverine. These act on the intestinal smooth muscle, causing it to relax. Other

muscle relaxants (e.g. hyoscine) are likely to cause antimuscarinic side-effects so are better used

as a second-line option. Laxatives, such as ispaghula, will help relieve constipation associated

with IBS, and are preferable to lactulose, which may exacerbate bloating. For those unable to

take bulk-forming laxatives, alternatives include stimulant preparations like senna, or osmotic

laxatives containing macro gel.

Huntington's disease is an inherited disease that causes the

progressive breakdown (degeneration) of nerve cells in the

brain. Huntington's disease has a broad impact on a person's

functional abilities and usually results in movement, thinking

(cognitive) and psychiatric disorders. Most people with

Huntington's disease develop signs and symptoms in their 30s or 40s, but the onset of disease

may be earlier or later in life. When disease onset begins before age 20, the condition is called

juvenile Huntington's disease. Huntington's disease usually causes movement, cognitive and

psychiatric disorders with a wide spectrum of signs and symptoms.Loss of previously learned

academic or physical skills.Contracted and rigid muscles that affect gait (especially in young

children). Huntington's disease is caused by an inherited defect in a single gene. Huntington's

disease is an autosomal dominant disorder, which means that a person needs only one copy of

the defective gene to develop the disorder. No treatments can alter the course of Huntington's

disease.

TERMINALIA CHEBULA Gurdeep Singh

Terminaliachebula is a medicinal plant widely distributed

throughout India, Burma and Shrilanka. Many Indian plant has been

used from immemorial to treat varies diseases and infection in

traditional medicine system. Terminalia chebula is called the king

of the medicine in Tibet and is always listen at the top of the list in

Ayurveda medicine. In Terminalia chebula, 33% of the total phytoconstituents are hydrolysable

tannins (which may vary from 20-50%) and are responsible for pharmacological activity.

Aqueous extract of T. chebula has been reported to show antifungal activity against a number of

dermatophytes. The extract of fruits of T. chebula showed inhibitory effects on human

immunodeficiency virus-1 reverse transcriptase-III. Terminalia chebula (haritaki) is one of the

most important medicinal plants used in medicines of ayurveda, siddha, unani and homeopathy

because of having a number of pharmacological properties. Therefore, there is an urgent need to

investigate the biological activity of its phytoconstituents for development of an effective, safe

and cheap herbal drug.

THE SALUTABLE INVENTION – STEM CELLS

When I was a small kid, I used to wonder how my hair grew when I got them trimmed. To me, it

seemed a magic which no one could see. While reading science magazines, the articles on tissue

cultures used to captivate my attention. I wondered how a single tissue could transmute into a big

plant. When I further read about hydra and planaria and their capacity to regenerate lost body

parts, my curiosity to explore further grew infinitely. It was wondrous for me how starfish and

lizard could revive their body parts.

Then a thought struck my mind-Wouldn’t it be marvellous if human internal organs too showed

the same characteristics. When we get wounded, within a few days, our cells repair to form a

new layer of skin but how piteous we feel when the doctor tells us that our liver or any other

internal organ is damaged?? But the good news is that now, there is no need to worry about such

things!! With the increasing advancement in bio-technology, great significant developments have

taken place in the field of stem cell research especially in past two years. It has considerably

contributed to expand human frontiers of science. It has paved a new path for curing some

hazardous diseases which were once considered a myth.The development in stem cell research

has touched great heights. However, the idea of this research is very much primitive. The time

when microscopes were invented and cell therapy was developed, scientists became well aware

of complex cells that constitute the human body. The coining of the term ‘stem cell’ can be

traced back to late 1800’s, however not much knowledge about them was possessed by any of

the biologists till then. In early 1900’s more information about bone marrow cells came forward

which eventually led to transplant of bone marrow and adult stem cells for treating Leukemia

and other diseases of blood. The human stem cell research took off its journey in late 20th

century with enormous advancement in technology.

Soon after, the scientists could use human embryonic

stem cell linesto entirely establish the striking

capabilities of stem cells, provoking new hopes of their

possible use to renew cells for vast range of tissues and

organs. Right from the beginning, the facts revealed and

discovered in stem cell research have left the scientists

even spellbound. Our grandparents could never imagine

even that so many ailments could be cured using our own cells. In their times, it was beyond

their grasp to heal such ailments but the stem research has paved new paths.

USA scientists proclaimed that if sponges are soaked in stem cells and applied to the mouth of

patients with open wounds in the oral cavity, the bones grew more effectively. In the area where

damaged teeth should have been, sponges were inserted and it was remarked that the tissue

regenerated faster than possible with bone grafts. Moreover, the bone tissue formed possessed

capabilities to support the implantation of false teeth. This gives new directions for new

treatment, addressing a wide variety of condition affecting the teeth, gums and underlying bone.

Today, it has become a tedious job for doctor to find transplant donors but stem cells are acting

HIV. But it is due to the sake of stem cells that new hopes are arising among doctors and patients

for curing this hazardous disease.

In today’s era, there are innumerable patients of diabetes. The disease is troubling a lot of people.

Wouldn’t it be great if some miracle appears to reduce the effect of this disease? Stem cells have

the potential to create that miracle!! Researchers have proclaimed that it may be possible to

generate specialized cells capable of generating insulin. These cells will be transplanted into

diabetics and remove the need of insulin injection.The achievements in the field of stem cell

research do not end here. They have even been used to treat heart diseases. The research

conducted laboratory animals like mice has shown that transplantation of stem cell from non

heart tissues into a damaged heart, healthy heart muscle cells were able to grow.

Although it is not possible to live forever or gain eternity but developments in stem cells have

paved new paths to increase life expectancy and thereby benefitting the entire mankind.
