VOL. 99, No. 13 www.LDAF.la.gov June 23, 2016 By Veronica Mosgrove For Carey Leggett from Jackson, La., he gets his thrill, not from blueberry hill, but from Blueberry Ridge Orchard. “I’m always the first one in the patch. I’m their biggest customer,” said Leggett. He says he eats blueberries daily. “They’re very, very healthy for you. I put them in my cereal in the morning and I love to make blueberry muffins.” He says he picks about 30 pounds a season. While Leggett’s been picking his own blueberries for the past 20 years, the other thing he enjoys is seeing the families that make it an outing. “It’s a wholesome outing for the kids. I love to hear the little noises they make.” Missy Jones, who owns Blueberry Ridge Orchard with her husband Chris, says they bought the farm about 13 years ago and decided to keep the three acre orchard open to the public. “It’s pretty popular. People watch our Facebook page and in May they start contacting us to find out when we open,” said Jones. Blueberry season starts the first weekend of June and typically lasts about six weeks. “We’re not certified organic, but people can eat straight from our bushes because we don’t spray our berries,” added Jones. She says people drive from all over the state and even farther distances to picnic on her property and pick blueberries. “We even have some people who schedule family vacations around the season.” Jones says people try to beat the heat and pick early in the morning or in the evening. Blueberry Ridge Orchard is open from sunrise to sunset. They grow eight to nine different varieties of blueberries. “It’s mostly a flavor thing which makes the difference for blueberry lovers. Another difference is that certain varieties produce early,” added Jones. Fifteen year old Kalyee Freiberger from Baton Rouge likes to pick berries with her grandparents and hopes to make it a tradition. “It’s very peaceful coming in the morning. I climb in the trees and eat the berries while I pick them,” said Freiberger. The day she visited with her grandparents, they picked 35 pounds of berries. As for the owner, she and her husband have regular, full-time jobs. However, they like to keep the orchard open for families to spend time together outside and to build memories. The Blueberry Ridge Orchard in Jackson, La. is open Monday through Saturday during blueberry season. Blueberries cost $1.50 per pound. Payment is based on the honor system with a scale and money box. You can find Blueberry Ridge Orchard on Facebook or for more information, call 225-629- 5311 or 603-2935. Look for a list of U-pick farms on page 2 and on the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry website: www.ldaf.la.gov. Blueberry health benefits include: fiber, potassium, folate, vitamins B6 and C. They are a low calorie fruit and support heart health, according to the USDA. For Carey Leggett from Jackson, La., he gets his thrill, not from blueberry hill, but from Blueberry Ridge Orchard.

“I’m always the first one in the

patch. I’m their biggest customer,” said Leggett. He says he eats blueberries daily. “They’re very, very healthy for you. I put them in my cereal in the morning and I love

to make blueberry muffins.” He says he picks about 30 pounds a season.

While Leggett’s been picking his own blueberries for the past 20 years, the other thing he enjoys is seeing the families that make it an outing. “It’s a wholesome outing for the kids. I love to hear the little noises they make.”

Missy Jones, who owns Blueberry Ridge Orchard with her husband Chris, says they bought the farm about 13 years ago and decided to keep the three acre orchard open to the public.

“We even have some people who schedule family vacations around

the season.” Jones says people try to beat the

heat and pick early in the morning or in the evening. Blueberry Ridge Orchard is open from sunrise to

sunset. They grow eight to nine different varieties of blueberries. “It’s mostly a flavor thing which makes the difference for blueberry lovers. Another difference is that certain varieties produce early,” added Jones.

Fifteen year old Kalyee Freiberger from Baton Rouge likes to pick berries with her grandparents

and hopes to make it a tradition.

You can find Blueberry Ridge Orchard on Facebook or for more information, call 225-629-5311 or 603-2935. We have seen an increase in the number of qualified nominees, especially among women and minorities, and I hope that trend continues.”

To be eligible to serve on a FSA county committee, a person must participate or cooperate in an FSA administered program, be eligible to vote in a county

committee election and reside in the local administrative area where they are nominated.

Farmers and ranchers may nominate themselves or others. Organizations representing minorities and women also may nominate candidates. To become a candidate, an eligible individual must sign an FSA-669A nomination form. The form and other information about FSA county committee elections are available at www.fsa.usda.gov/elections. 2016 nomination forms must be postmarked or received in the local USDA Service Center by close of business on Aug. 1, 2016.

FSA will mail election ballots to eligible voters beginning Nov. 7, 2016. Ballots must be returned to the local county office via mail or in person by Dec. 5, 2016. Newly-elected committee members and alternates will take office on Jan. 1, 2017.

Nationwide, there are

approximately 7,800 farmers and ranchers serving on FSA county committees. These individuals make decisions on disaster and conservation programs, emergency programs, commodity price support loan programs, and other agricultural issues. Committees consist of three to 11 members that are elected by eligible producers, and members serve three-year terms.

Since 2009, USDA has worked to strengthen and support American agriculture, an industry that supports one in 11 American jobs, provides American consumers with more than 80 percent of the food we consume, ensures that Americans spend less of their paychecks at the grocery store than most people in other countries, and supports markets

for homegrown renewable energy and materials. USDA has also provided $5.6 billion in disaster relief to farmers and ranchers; expanded risk management tools with products like Whole Farm Revenue Protection; and helped farm businesses grow with $36 billion in farm credit. The Department has engaged its resources to support a strong next generation of farmers and ranchers by improving access to land and capital; building new markets and market opportunities; and extending new conservation opportunities. USDA has developed new markets for rural-made products, including more than 2,500 biobased products through USDA's BioPreferred program; and invested $64 billion in infrastructure and community facilities to help improve the quality of life in rural America. (06/10/16) BATON ROUGE, La. – Louisiana farmers need to make sure they’re scouting their fields for signs of diseases, including Asian soybean rust, which was found Thursday (June 9) in Iberville Parish.

The disease, which causes lesions on plants and can result in major yield losses, was observed in soybeans at the R2 growth stage in LSU AgCenter research plots near St. Gabriel, said Clayton Hollier, an AgCenter plant pathologist.

But there is no need for alarm if farmers take time to check their fields for possible problems, Hollier said. Soybean rust can have devastating effects, but the disease is manageable with timely fungicide applications.

“Scout thoroughly and often,” he said. “Decisions on management should be based on growth stage of the soybeans, the disease incidence and severity, predicted weather conditions and the susceptibility of the varieties grown.”

The fungicides that most soybean farmers already apply to manage other common diseases will also manage soybean rust, Hollier said. If growers apply fungicides for other diseases during the R3 and R4 stages, soybean rust will be managed too, he said.

Soybean rust was first observed in Louisiana in 2004. Unlike in other parts of the word, Hollier said, the disease overwinters in Louisiana on kudzu.

“This past winter was mild,” Hollier said. “With that, we expect higher-than-normal soybean rust buildup, but it should decline soon.”

High summertime temperatures reduce buildup of the pathogen, he said.

More information about soybean rust and other common soybean diseases is available in the AgCenter’s Soybean Field Guide at soybean.lsuagcenter.com.

(06/14/16) GREENSBURG, La. – ‘The Next Generation of Farmers’ was the theme of the St. Helena Parish Agriculture Day and Sustainable Farm Tour on June 13.

LSU AgCenter agent Ahmad Robertson said the event gives area farmers an opportunity to showcase agriculture and help young people understand where their food comes from.

“AgDay also allows these growers to share the true success that we see as we look out across rural America today,’ he said.

Over 120 agriculture enthusiasts, about half of which were children, attended the tour, traveling from as far away as New Orleans and Lafayette.

The annual event began with a beef cattle tour of Larry Freeman’s farm, where LSU AgCenter forage specialist Ed Twidwell discussed the proper management of forages.

From there, the group traveled to three other vegetable growers’ farms to see how hard work pays dividends.

At those farms, LSU AgCenter entomologist Dennis Ring and weed specialist Ron Strahan answered questions and gave tips on being successful in the vegetable industry.

At Warner Hall’s vegetable farm, the group saw how the LSU AgCenter retiree produces enough vegetables for his family and many others on the farm where he grew up.

“I grow corn, watermelons, beans, tomatoes, squash, hibiscus, a row of sugarcane and a few other vegetables,” Hall said. “Several of my friends and I bring our produce together and sell from here in my yard, and we take some to stores in Baton Rouge also.”

At Jerry Hall’s vegetable farm, the group saw how vegetables can be raised without

using traditional herbicides and pesticides. At Willie Tillery’s vegetable farm, the

group saw how the 80-year-old keeps active by raising produce.

Tillery uses a variety of methods to deter wildlife from his crop. In his watermelon patch, he uses a maze of string to keep the crows and raccoons out. To deter deer, he ties plastic grocery bags to the string to scare them away, he said.

Robertson said he tries to invite a diverse crowd from other areas so they can take the information back to their areas.

“We want them to see rotational grazing and forage management on a beef cattle farm,” he said. “We also want them to see drip irrigation and integrated pest management in vegetable operations.”

For the past 10 years, growers in the area have been holding AgDay in the parish, Robertson said.

“In addition to the growers providing information, we also have state specialists from the LSU AgCenter here to answer questions, especially for the youth because they are the future,” he said.

Robertson’s parish advisory committee meets each spring to discuss issues in the parish and to develop the plan for AgDay

The students in attendance were part of the parish summer enrichment program, 4-H and One More Generation (OMG) kids.

The event conclude with a sponsored lunch, where 90-year-old L.S. Spears was presented the 2016 Small Farmer Award for 75 years of agriculture service.

“Mr. Spears still grows his crops on 350 foot rows and is known throughout the parish for the exceptional work he does on the farm,” Robertson said.
