That is, the BSU wants the Admissions Office to recognize that just being black in a white society, you have to pay what is termed a "black tax". A task force set up to examine the above proposal reached the folowing conclusions. Black students entering MIT in 1969 will receive their full need in scholarship assistance alone for their first two years at MIT. For their remaining two years, they receive a combination scholarship-loan package, as does the rest of the Institute student body. Should the student require a fifth year at MIT, this will be funded by scholarship assistance only. The Institute is on record as being commit- ted to the specifics of the above pro- gram for at least one year. The task was to suggest "reasonable adjustments" only. Constricting The conclusion of the group was that the requirement system tended to be constricting. French explained that there is evidence of growing diversity- the range of undergraduate degree pro- grams has been broadened, and the incoming classes reflect a wider range of interests and preparation. In light of this, French stated that he did not think a unique set of regquirements could be found that would satisfy everyone. A special section of Room 10-250 had been set aside for the observers. Noting that the 100 available seats were filled, Johnson welcomed the visi- tors, and noted that the admission of guests was a "popular idea." The main issue under consideration at the meeting was the recommenda- tions of the Committee on Educational Policy task force on changing the Insti- tute requirements. In addition to the CEP proposals, three other sets of pro- posals were introduced by various groups of students at the meeting. Vote postponed The CEP proposals were formally moved and seconded, after which John- son opened the meeting for discussion of them and the student proposals. Johnson called for postponement of a vote on the issue, until at least the next meeting, in light of the additional material. Chainnan of the Faculty, Walter Rosenblith, opened the discussion on the proposals with a brief recounting of previous changes in the Institute requirements. He noted that the last change was in 1964, and that he would "go along with the '64 report" on Insti- tute requirements. Teller explained his views on stu- 'dent Unrest, the-scienfist's responibib- itY in society, and the 'anti-ballistic missile system in a brief lecture fol- lowed by a question-and-answer ses- sion. Often cutting questioners short and dodging technical points, his re- marks were frequently answered by hisses from the audience. Teller is best known for his partici- pation in the Manhattan Project, and for his advocacy of the development of the hydrogen bomb. He has recently been noted for his advocacy of the contraversial ABM system. Teller said in his opening remarks that about ten years ago he had op- posed the development of an anti- ballistic missile system, but that he had since changed his mind. Taller said that we expect the Chi- nese to develop a nuclear weapon deivery system wit}in ten years. He feels that the proposed ABM system would be effective against a possible Chinese attack. He also noted that the Chinese would be much less restrained from nuclear attack than the less ad- venturous Russians. Furthermore, Teller said that the proposed ABM system could be used effectively as a trial system on which to base future missile defense systems. He Black Student Union proposals made earlier this year are being consi- dered and acted upon by the Admini- stration. Work on the two central proposals, one for a black history course (s), the other for more black students, has been begun by, respectively, the Humanities Department and the Office of Admis- sions. Black Experience As a result, a new course entitled 21.966 -The Black Experience is being offered for the first time this semester. Its enrollment consists of both black and white students, with the black stu- dents in a slm majority. Heading the coirse is Professor Richard Wertz of the Humanities Department. Thus far, both students and professor rate the course as a success, but both also have adopted a "wait and see" attitude regarding MIT's first attempt to teach black history and culture. Hopefully, the course will be fruitful in its attempt to give all its students, both black and white, a sense of the black idenity. The syllabus for the course was developed by both the Humanities Department and members of the Black Student Union, because this way, all parties concerned felt that the course would be much more oriented toward the requests for the specific black his- tory course that the BSU made in the first place. Projected plans for the future show more and better courses like The Black Experience on tap, with an eye toward making an MIT educa- ing issues members. Dean Wadleigh then explained that MIT was looking to the visiting committee for innovative ideas, value judgements, even a "kick in the pants", if necessary. There was some question raised as to the credentials of the Committee and what contact they had with the students. Discussion then moved to the foreign students at MIT. There was some debate among foreign students as to the desirability of having an international house at MIT. Representing the MIT Corporation, they came to get a view of student life at the Institute, and to make their recommendation§ to the Corporation. Two of the main issues that came before them were coeds living off campus, and leaving parietals up to the individual dorms. Monday afternoon an open meeting was held at which students spoke their views on any matters that were bothering them about Institute life. The meeting opened with an introduction by Dean Wadleigh. Basically, the motion would retain the other General Insti- tute Requirements, including those for Science Distribution and Laboratory. The changes would take effect for classes entering in September, 1969. The proposal also specifies that stu- dents majoring in science and engi- neering take at least 24 units of the Science Distribution requirement out- side of their major field. In addition, "at least 18 units of the upperclass Humanities and Social Science require- ment must be outside their major field for students in the Schools of Humani- ties and Social Science and of Architec- ture, Urban Studies and Planning." A minimum of 24 units of free elec- tives in the freshman year, 30 in the sophomore year, and 24 in the junior and senior years combined are one object of the motion, and approval of the individual department programs would be subject to flthis guideline. The departnents would also be required to specify thesubjets a student must complete by the o of his sophomore year in order to qualify for his degra in the normal time allotted. "Ad Hoc Committee" The faculty has before it also a pro- posal from the Ad Hoc Committee for Change, a student group who propose the elimination of all subject require- ments, general and otherwise (to be replaced by "suggested" core subject groups), and a modified advisory sys- tem for students. -The Ad Hoc Com- mittee requests that these changes be considered immediately. Early' in this academic year the Ad Hoc Committee attempted without success to secure modified grading systems for a number of subjects. Additional ideas of the Committee, suggested for suture consideration, fea- ture grading systems of pass/fail and/or pass/no-record, or a system by which a student chooses how he is to be graded, and a "simple procedure for the formu- lation and establishment of student ini- tiated courses and seminars." A total number of units would be required for graduation; this number could be modi- fied somewhat with the consent of the student's two (or mote) advisors. contact with. the faculty. A story which comes to mind isthat which a friend of ours on the faculty tells of a studentwho gave up on seeing a professor about his educationalfuture because the professor's office had been moved. Thisattitude is closely related to the syndrome which detersstudents from asking their instructors for extra help withcourse material or asking questions in class for fear ofappearing studpid. There is a certain unnecessary reluctanceon the part of most students to do anything which might beinterpreted as an imposition on.a faculty member, despitethe fact that they came to MIT precisely to be able to"impose" themselves on an outstanding faculty.

Nowhere is this proble m more acute than among fresh-men. The average freshman comes with an immense respectfor scientific competence and views his instructors, particu-.larly the lecturers in charge of the core courses, as somesort of demigods. In addition, the freshman knows few peo-ple and is struck by the apparent indifference of the Insti-tute toward him in comparison with his high school. Hisown respect for competence (as exemplified by the facul-ty), his relative incompetence .compared with other mem-bers of the Institute community, and his desire to do whatthe Institute expects of him lead him to the conclusion thathis place is to be seen and not heard and to accept what theInstitute gives him rather than seek what he desires withinthe framework of the Institute.

This timidity which seems to be characteristic of all toomany students around the Institute leads us to the conclu-sion that most students will not take advantage of theopportunities the Institute offers for guidance and coun-seling unless the formal system which exists makes it clearthat the the student is expected to do so. While the currentsystem does not prevent the student from taking advantageof the good advisors who are around and the various waysto put together a personalized curriculum, it does preciouslittle to encourage him to do so.

The human qualifies of the faculty members who areadvisors of course cannot be changed. There are, however,specific changes which can be made in the mechanical sys-tem which selects and assigns advisors which will enablestudents to get more out of ourgiven Human resources.

One change which could be made would be to-givefaculty members some concrete incentive to be good adi-sors. We all know that graded problem sets are the first oneswhich the student does. Certainly advising students is oneof the most important educational tasks which an institu-tion of learning has. If a faculty member's effectiveness inhelping his students do meaningful things with their liveswere taken into account at in tenure and promotion deci-sions, more faculty members might consider advising stu-dents a worthwhile activity. ing or committee work for advisors might be another incen-tive.

Another change wfiich miight be considered in themechanics of the system would be a reduction in the stu-dent/advisor ratio, so that the advisor could get to knoweach of his students better. - e

Still another possibility would be to have all-volunteer ,advisors. This would ensure that those who do advise stu- _dents have at least some minimal interest in this problem. If iincentives-such as those discussed above were offered, itmight be possible to get a sufficient number of volunteers.At present, some faculty members do volunteer becausethey are interested in students (these are generally the bestadvisors). Oiher advisors are not exactly coerced, but-if anassistant professor is approached by his department headwith a "suggestion" that he be one of.the members of hisdepartment who will be freshman advisors, what can hesay?

Other changes which might be considered would behaving the student responsible for selecting the advisor hefeels will help him the most, contingent upon the approvalof the facultymember in question. Another alternativewould be to give each student more than one advisor, oneof whom might be assigned on a living group rather thandepartmental basis to imporve advisor accessibility andensure that the advisor takes an interest in the total deve-lopment of the student.

It sould be noted that all of these proposals are designedto be relatively mechanical changes which require no sud-den outpouring of "student-faculty communication" butwhich prevent the student from suffering with a single non-advisor as can happen at present.

The problem of Institute and departmental require-ments which has seen so much debate recently is intimatelyrelated to the deficiencies in the advisory system. So long as the Institute anddepartmental requirements exist, it is impossible for a stu-dent to go entirely off on some unreasonable tangent; theadvisor need not worry too much about what courses to'encourage his students to take. It is at once clear to me that a goodnumber of sound arguments could beproduced supporting the proposed at-tendance of faculty meetings by stu-dents. As a student concerned with theimprovement of my educational oppor-tunities, I might go so far as to suggest

to the faculty that our mutual interestscould be better served by encouragingstudent-faculty cooperation in the de-velopment of educational programsthrough student attendance- of faculty

One aspect of the Institute educational process whichhas come under -increasing fire recently is the advisorysystem. This was true both in the faculty meeting debateconcerning the Institute requirements, and in student dis-cussions with the Corporation Visiting Committee on Stu-dent Affairs.

For irany students at the Institute, the advisory systemworks well. This is due, however, not to the structure of thesystem itself, but to the fact that there are some facultymembers who are exceptionally free advisors. A studentwill benefit from having a good advisor regardless of thesystem which assigns that advisor to him -.......

However, there is a broad spectrum of faculty memberswho participate in the advisory program. For every excel-lent advisor, there seems to be at least one poor one, jud-ging from conversations-we have had with a number ofstudents and student comments at the Visiting Committeeforurm Monday. For a variety of reasons - lack of interest,too many outside responsibilities, out-of-town activities,heavy teaching load, etc. - many faculty members are noteffective advisors. The reaction of most students whenquereied concerning their relationship with their advisor isthat he signs their schedules at the beginning of each term.Given the complex decisions each student must make dur-ing his time at the Institute, it seems to us that the Instituteowes its students more than this.

The ideal advisor feels that it is his job to learn aboutthe various options open to students in the curriculum, andactively encourage his advisees to take advantage of them.He takes a personal interest in each of his student's progressthrough the Institute, and considers it important that eachfind: a field of endeavor- which enables him to fulfill hispotential. He is the sort of person with whom students feelthey can talk concerning personal matters. If he does notknow the answer to a question, he does know who does. .

This sort of person is rare. However, the value of anadvisory system should -be that it contains checks andbalances to offset the shortcomings of individual facultyadvisors so that a student's ability to make effective deci-sions about his future does not depend upon one randomlyselected mente of his department. Under the current -sys-tem, the more agressive students acquire a number of defacto advisors during their progress through the Institutewho are generally faculty members the student has come toknow well in a recitation section, living group or othersituation. Thus, even if his formally designated advisor isinclined to be no more than his registration officer, thisstudent has a number of trusted faculty members who takean interest in his intellectual progress.

There is, however, a certain timidity which many stu-dents display when it comes to taking the Institute by thehorns and wresting from it $2150 worth of good advice and

Fire in the Snow" kindled slowly aspeople gathered in the cold rain onBriggs Field the first afternoon of rea-ding period.

Supervised by a trained volunteercorps, clusters of random peoplegrouped together to hold the polyethy-lene balloons over open flames frompropane gas tanks. Some of the ten tohundred feet high balloons rose withthe heat; others showed torn seams orholes.

A few of the balloons which rose inthe early dark looked spectacular as alarge spotlight was focused on them.That and the friendly atmosphere madethe experience worthwhile. As art,however, it was a less than satisfactoryshow; kinetic art must work betterthan Piene's random festival did. Welook forward to the Center forAdvanced Visual Studies' next presen-tation.

Record Company Week," in honor ofthe inconsiderate actions of a few firmsin recent weeks. Chess, A&M, andColumbia seem to have forgotten thatthey are in the business of producingand selling records rather thansatisfying the whims of theirexecutives.

Chess is responsible for both"Electric Mud," by Muddy-Waters, andthe new Howlin' Wolf album. TheseLP's are electrified versions of theblues, complete with "Big Beat"backup bands. Any company whichresorts to force to get an artist torecord is doing a great disservice toeveryone involved, but the Chessmanagement apparently thought itnecessary.

A feud concerning recording rightsto the new group composed of DavidCrosby, Graham Nash and Steve Stillshas developed. A&M and Columbia arethe companies involved, and they havesucceeded in silencing the group forsome time now. Perhaps they will haveto learn the hard way that anunrecorded group is rarely worth muchto anyone.

"Rosencrantz and Guildenstern areDead," now playing at the Schuster,Theater, is an attempt to analyze thephilosophical implications of the trialsand travels of these two much-malignedcharacters of Shakespeare's "Hamlet."In Shakespeare's plot, Rosencrantz andGuildenstern are two courtesans, child-hood friends of the prince Hamlet,called back to the Court by the new king Claudius, and his wife Gertrude(Hamlet's mother by the previous king,Claudius' brother) in order to deter-mine the cause of Hamlet's moroseness,and if possible to brighten his outlook.

Waiting for GodotA good deal of this modern-style fo-

cus on two relatively minor charactersof "Hamlet" deals with their journeyto the court, and their growing puzzle-ment -over the reasons why they aregoing. In fact, there is a striking similar-

flipping. No matter how elaborate thetechniques they employ in tossing thecoin, they can never break the spell ofheads; perhaps this is a dramatic illus-tradion of the fact that according to thelaws of probability even the most-im-probably event can occur sometime.

The importance of being deadMore important, of course, 'to the

continuity of the play -is the deaththeme, suggested in the iftle, whicheventually leads to a semi-existentialisttheme in the concluding scenes. Rosen-crantz and Guildenstem discuss deathat length at various points in the play,for no apparent reason other than theinterest of the theme. They imagine,and there are humorous aspects to thediscussion (the entire play is shotthrough with a delightful streak ofhumor), what death must be like todead and buried persons. But, ofcourse, they realize the fallacy of theirreasoning: that they are chained to theoutlook and concepts of living beings.

During the course of their journey,they meet with a roving group of actors(who later turn out to be the itinerantcast of "'he Death of Gonzago" whichso'upsets King Claudius), who interest-inly enough specialize in the deaththeme. The encounter is not a pleasantone, and 'in subsequent meetings theimportance of the actors' frivolous atti-tude toward death becomes evident.

The play is, for extended stretches,rather boring. Perhaps this should notbe considered a valid criticism, or evenany kind of criticism, since this qualityof the play (while not characteristic ofmore than a few scenes) seems to s.%orvup the basic theme. One tires of seeingRosencrantz and Guildenstern by theirlittle lonesomes for entire scenes, dis-

MIT once again provided its under-graduate students with real "sock-it-t''em" entertainment at Saturday night's.mixer, in commemoration of a new(and bigger and better) term and asomewhat premature celebration of theChinese New Year.

The festive scene was enlivened con-siderably by the gay costumes andglowing countances of the hip girls ofWatertown High, who swarmed in-great, giggling masses to the SocialEvent of the season. The dance floorshook with the savage thunder of aban-doned feet, to the throbbing soundsprovided by the Institute's most popu-

ity to Beckett's "Waiting for Godot,"in that the main characters iLn bothplays are definitely waiting for some-one or something, but in neither in-stance can they explain exactly what itis. Beckett called the personification ofthis "something" Godot (who, incid-entally, never arrived), and Rosen-crantz and Guildenstem haven't thefaintest idea what to call it, except per-haps fate.

They carefully explain in the initialscenes of the play how an unidentifiedmessenger called them early one morn-ing and told them to go to the Court.They obeyed instantly, without eventhinking, and this fact in itself disturbsthem - can one, should one, call itfate? More perplexing is the fact that inthe course of amusing themselves whiletravelling, they have managed to toss98 consecutive heads in a gamblingcontest based on the results of this coin

It's easy to see, from this singleexperience, that MIT's rumored reputa-tion for being a "serious" (ie: deadlystuffy) institute selfishly concernedwith nourishing the mind and starvingthe soul is entirely unwarrented. Satur-day night's mixer certainly proved- atleast, to this callous reporter- thatMIT can hold its own whenit comes togivmng the "NOW" generation of todayexactly what it Wants. In a sense,Rosencrantz andGuildenstern are merely brought to therealization that the easiest way out isto play their parts ("All the world's astage," and etc. courtesy W. Shakes-peare. Admissions Office, however, remainsattracting black students to MIT. Forthe class of 1972, MIT had only 29black applicants, of whom 12 wereadmitted, and seven chose to enroll.Hence, fewer than one per cent of thefreshman class is black, far lower thanmost other top quality universities.

The Admissions Office has laboredhard, however, and this year anticipatesreceiving about one hundred applica-tions from black high school students,thus increasing the size of the blackstudents enrolled. As one Admissionsofficer concluded, '"The problem Ls injust getting applications."

Project EpsilonAccordingly, the Ins.ftute has esta-

blished Project Epsilon, which beganabout one year ago. Under this pro-gram, the school will admit studentswhose college board scores as a group,are about 120-130 points below themean for the class. This way, MIThopes to encourage attendance formstudents who have talent, but, if notenrolled in the project, could not havecome here. Letters have been sent outto potentially promising black studentsall over the country, and a person-to-person recruitment drive has been ini-tiated. The success of the program can-not be measured yet, but might bemore accurately metered in five yearsTAm. these students graduate from

The taskforce, he explained,-decided in favor ofmore range of choice early, eventhough "it carries some.risk" to latersubject programs.

The student proposals were thenintroduced. Six students, two represen-ting each proposal, were granted spea-king privileges. French indicated thatthe Ad Hoc Committee memberswould go first, at which point ProfessorMorris Halle rose to move the propo-sals. After a moment of confusion,Johnson ruled that the proposals wereto be discussed only.

Students speakLarry White, '69, then explained

the Ad Hoc Committee for Change pro-posals. He noted that his group consi-dered the principles of undergraduateeducation basically sound, althoughcourses lose their value when the stu-dent is required to take them. Whitecharged that "required courses canteach facts, but it is at the sacrifice ofintellectual curiosity."

White then ennumerated the propo-sals of his group, which included theabolition of all Institute requirementsand the institution of an improvedcounseling service. White argued thatfor those who still would feel the needfor structured courses, the Instituteshould keep the same catalog listings,using them as guidelines.'He noted thatany student seeking to master somediscipline would most likely take therequired courses within the disciplineanyway.

Zacharias speaksProfessor Jerrold Zacharias, Depart-

ment of Physics, then exlpressed hissupport of one part of the Ad HocCommittee's proposals that called for agroup to thoroughly investigate atti-tudes towards undergraduate requirements. Zacharias chaged that the CEPproposals were "little steps for littlefeet", in a time of upheavals in manyuniversities.

Professor Paul Gray, Assistant Pro-vost, responded that the problemfacing the task force was one of findingthe correct balance between freedomof choice, and a minimal set of require-ments. He noted the student interestand activit in the efforts, and said thatthe recommendations of the task forcerepresented such a balance.

Rosenblith also defnded the CEYproposals, stating ."the fact is, that thEis a very modest proposal." He commenied that an educational utopiashouldn't be expected.

In other action, the faculty voted tcrename Geology and Geophysics 'Eartiand Planetary Sciences'. They alsoapproved a new doctoral degree in thafield. Johnson named Professor Charle:Myers to head a committee to judgethe effects of open faculty meetingsJohnson also accepted a report fruitthe Committee on Placement Service:that reviewed in detail the Placemenactivities at MIT. Johnson theaadjourned the two hour mneeting, witibrief remarks on thile March 4 strike. Hnoted that a "large majority axe, oxcourse, concerned about the implications of research," and urged continuecfaculty-student efforts at defining th-issues involved.

The groupexpresses, with approval, a belief that"the unique outlook and approach ofMIT" will continue to be felt by allstudents through "work in the class-room and the influence of an'invisiblecurriculum' . . . which pervades MIT."

Although the proposals are essen-tially complete within themselves, theywill be introduced eventually as amend-ments to the CEP preposals. The CEPproposals are currently under discus-sion as old business to be brought up atthe next faculty meeting.

can, or should be able to decide whenhe wants to have a girl in his room.

The only problems that werebrought up were legal. The dorms andfraternities are icersed as boardinghouses. Such licenses can be withdrawnat the whim of the board of licensing.Mr. Gerald Berlin, member of thecommittee and a lawyer, said that hedidn't see anyone "shutting down thedorms because they violated thelicensing laws." But that "fraternitiesare in a worse position."

The consensus of the administration -and house masters present was that itwould be necessary to make sure thatofficers of the various housesunderstand thoroughly theirresponsibilities under the law.

Tuesday afternoon was devoted toclosed discussion. This was divided intodiscussion with faculty andadministration and a sessioncompletely closed in thich they drewup their recommendations, which.werenot available at press time.

Gregory Smith, chairman, said thathe personally favored making thecommittee's recommendations public,but that the -committee as a wholewould have to vote. Wadleigh said thatthat decision was up to the committeeand that he had no say in the matter.

other foreign students. Rebuttal camein the form of discussion of howdesirable it was to integrate the foreignstudents to the MIT environment. -Aplea was made that foreign students be"regarded as one of us, instead of beinglooked upon as a guest and MIT isbeing nice to that student's country."

Discussion then turned to housing.A need was recognized for morehousing for graduates on campus. Atthis time only one-fourth of thegraduate students are housed oncampus. Wadleigh said that there is anemphasis on undergraduate donms forthe next few years..In addition toMacGregor, another dorm is planned.But, the undergraduate admissionspolicy has been to hold the numberadmitted essentially constant. Thenumber of girls is supposed to rise to75 a year, as soon as there is room. Oneof the students present warned againstbeing isolated in ivory towers in thedorms, and not being able to interactwith the real world.

Advisory System

When one of the members of thecommittee asked for comments aboutexpectations of MIT before comingversus impressions after being here,discussion turned to the advisorysystem at MIT'. A majority of thosecommenting felt that the system"reeks". Their were a few students, onea freshman, who said that theirexperiences with an advisor had beenvery good, and that they were verypleased. Prof. John Graves, Humanities,said that while- there are someindividual exceptions, as a whole thesystem is bad. Part of the problem isthat there seems to be differentconceptions of what role should beplayed by the advisor. Should he be aregistration officer, a counselor, a guidethrough the intricacies of the Instituterules,' a combination of the above, orjust what?

Alternate ways of assigning studentsto advisors was also discussed. Includedwere students picking advisors, andassigning on a living group basis, anadvisor for a floor, or somethingsimilar.

Discussion broke up into a socialhour, after which the members of thecommittee went to various dorms andfraternities, to meet more students andgain a better picture of student life atMIT. Some members of the committeesaid that they were happy with theopen discussion but wished that itcould have gone on longer.

Coeds off campus

The Tuesday morning discussionswere concerned with coeds beingallowed to live off campus andparietals. Laurie Nisonoff '70 gave the,

positions of the coeds regarding livingoff campus. While the number of girlshas.gone up, there is nothing that saysthat they will all be able to mix wellwith the other coeds. She characterizedMcCormick as. "Probably the mostbeautiful girl's dorm, but also thebitchiest."

She also said that it is much easierfor MIT males to see Boston and to gooff campus whenever they wish. Coeds,on the other hand, "don't see peopleother than MIT people." Many of thegirls did some strange things during-theblizzard because they were afraid theywere not going to be able to get awayfrom McCormick for a few days.

Mrs. Virginia Hildebrand '47, amember of the committee, and aformer coed, was here when there wasnot a girl's dorm. She commented,'"he situation will not appear so grandand glorious after a few years of thisarrangement." There was somequestion as to the safety of those coedsliving offcampus. Wadleigh said thatthe dissatisfaction was so great that itoverweighed the problem. Also, thosewho do live off-campus, for specialreasons of some sort, have not had anyproblem.

The committee was given thepetition that the McCormick girlssigned. The petition had the provisionthat coeds under 21 would have tohave parental permission to liveoff-campus. The committee felt thateven that restriction should not bekept, and that the female livingrequirements should be exactly thesame as the male requirements.

Much was made of the fact that theparietal policy in the dorms is that ofde facto open hours, even if the rulesare not. Eben Walker '69, Dormconchairman, said that the main emphasisfor having parietals be theresponsibility of the individuardorms isthat MIT views the student as matureenough to run his own life, hence he

travelled to Mount Sugarloaf, Maine,for the New England Inter-collegiateSki Association's Division II Champion-ships.

Participating- were the six Division

II teams (UNH, ColbyNorwich, Maine,Yale, and MIT), and the top three divi-sion III teams (New England College,West Point, and Bates).

with a hard-fought seventh place. Theteam, however, managed only seventh.

In the Cross Country, Tech's strong-est event, Max Daamen '70 led MITwith a ninth place finish. Captain Doug

. Cale '69, who had placed fifth lastyear, was sick all week, but hung on tofinish right behind Max in tenth place.Tech placed fourth out of the nineschools.

Saturday morning, Tech got off toan excellent start in the slalom, withSchultz having the fifth fastest firstrun. But his luck ran out in the secondrun, when his binding popped, and hefailed to fhiish. Miles Wagner '71 wasTech's top scorer, with a 19th in thefield of 50.

Jumping, Tech's weakest eventdashed all hopes for sixth place. Ourtop jumper, Rich Freyberg '70, placedabout half-way down the field.

The disappointing finish in the sla-lom and jump made it impossible tocatch Maine, and thus MIT will be inDivision III next year for the first time.Without some of the bad breaks, itcould have been different, but at last,the Tech skiers will get into a leaguewhere they are a power 'rather, than apushover.

tinued along the low road Wednesdayas the Tech five fell to a powerfulNortheastern squad, 73-59. The engi--neers now own a depressing 2-12 sea-son record.

Although the score doesn't indicateit, the game was a hard-fought affair.Northeastern could never really rip thegame wide open; it was more of a long,grinding process where the NU lead just'seemed to creep upwards. The Huskiespushed the margin to 41-29 by the endof the half.

In the second half, the lead grew totwenty-four points at one juncture, butBen Wilson's work under the boards,and the engineer defense narrowed thefinal count to fourteen.

The story of the game can be seenin the statistics. The fact that MIT hadonly thirteen turnovers to twenty forthe Huskies can be attributed to animprovement in the engineers' ball-handling and defense. The squad had acold night from the floor, hitting only23 of 65 shots for thirty-four per cent.

However, the Tech squad was reallyhurt at the charity stripe, where theyconnected on only 13 of 26 attempts,while Northeastern sank 17 of 24.

Despite the defeat, Wilson conti-nued his spectacular play. He led allscorers with 9 of 17 floor shots, and sixfrom the foul line for 24 points. He

also controlled both boards, with aphenomenal 23 rebounds. Gary Sharpechipped in seven for the losers. BillMoxley supplied the power behind theHuskie attack with 19 points.

In contests coming up for the otherfreshman teams, the squash team tra-vels uptown to face Harvard tomorrow,while the swimmers take on Holy Crossat home. The grapplers don't competeagain until next Tuesday.

BTP was extended into overtime bya game SPE squad before emergingwith a 4946 victory. The Sig Eps weredown by as many as 13 points at onestage in the game, before they finallytied the score at 45 all on a pail of freethrows by Jim Truitt '69 at the buzzer.All the points in the overtime periodwere scored on foul shots as the gamewas roughly played throughout. LCA and Chi Phi won their respec-

tive A league divisions as the regularseason came to a halt. LCA set backtwo opponents on successive days toremain undefeated. The Lambda Chisfirst beat Burton 6-1 as Jim Bardis '70scored two goals, then sent Theta Chito its first loss, 2-0, as Bardis and Char-ley Snell '71 did the scoring. -

Joe Baton, '70; Gregg Erickson, '69;and Mhie Sherrad, '71, did not wrestleWednesday night, for, they al got for-feits5 as did Walt Price, '70. Price's for-feit gave him a helpful rest, for he hasjust recovered from a painfiul chestinjury sustained in his match against aHarvard wrestler. Although these fo-feits were welcome, easy points for theTech wrestlers, there were no fearsabout putting these men aginst any-thing Amherst might have offered intheir weigf class.

Although Amherst's hopes star-ted off rather dimly, the next twomatches doused the light completely.Jack Maxham, '69, punished his oppo-nent for six minutes before the match,Ended, leaving Maxham an 11-0 vic-tory. Senior Norm Hawkins then pro-'ceeed to widen the scoring gap bydecisioniing his opponent 5-2; these last

astwo wins made the rest easy for theeTech grapplers, for it was now impos-s~i'e for Amherst to win the wrestlingmatch, even if they all pinned theirMIT adversaries. This was, decidedly,not to happen.

battle all the way, and rallied in the lastevent, but Dartmouthi managed to clingto the remnants of its lead to eke out a111.90 to 109.75 victory last Wednes-day. MI1T took four of the six firsts,but Dartmouth took five of theseconds in winning their secondstraight from Tech this year.

The engineers looked best on therings, which they won 21.4 to 19.05.Tom Hafer '70 took an impressive first,with an 8.15 score. He was ably backedup by Ken Gerber '71, who capturedthird with a 6.70, and Captain DickHood '70, who scored 6.55.

The only other event the engineerswon was the last- the high bars. Hoodeasily captured first, with a 7.2, andGerber copped third with a 4.35. Thiscut Dartmouth's lead by threepoints,but it was not enough .

Dartmouth won the floor exercises17.4-15. Hood took second for Techwith a 5.6. Dave Beck '72, gave anotherexhibition performance and scored 7.1,a full pint better than the first placescore.
