Fro m t h e R a bb i ’s S t u d y Tishrei is the Hebrew month when so much happens – Rosh Ha-Shanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. Heshvan is the Hebrew

month that immediately follows. It is often called “Mar” Heshvan - trans-lated as “bitter” Heshvan, because it is the only Hebrew month without any holidays. I often joke, that whichever rab-bi titled “Heshvan” as “Mar-Heshvan” was obviously NOT a pulpit rabbi! Though Tishrei is the busiest month of the year, I would not say that it is the most spiritually challenging. Actually, the rabbis were right- there is a bitterness in a month with-out holidays. Or, more accurately there is a frustration in trying to find

Rabbi David M. [email protected]

the spiritual without any shortcuts. Holidays are spiritual shortcuts. We have rituals. We have family gather-ings. We have synagogue celebrations. All of these are shortcuts to spiritual connection. What is much harder is to try to find spiritual connection in the every day. It is a challenge to make time for God when sometimes it doesn’t even seem like we have time for ourselves. It can be overwhelming to think about talking to God when it doesn’t seem like we have time to talk to our spouses or children. This, I would suggest, is the most challenging part of faith - learn-ing how to live spiritually in ordinary times. Sometimes people are able to do this through prayer or meditation or even through mindful eating. What we cannot afford to do,

Learning to Live in Ordinary Timesthough, is to live our lives on auto-pilot. The purpose of the holidays of Tishrei is to prepare us not for “Mar” Heshvan, but “Mundane” Heshvan. In the same way that a married couple seeks out ways to “keep dating” after many years of marriage, we must nur-ture and invest in a spiritual life. Interactions such as finding ways of seeking holiness in the work inter-action, the bedtime story, the home-less man at the highway interchange or the grocery store take up most of our lives. If we can find a way to live them spiritually, we will have added an entire new dimension of holiness to our week, our month, our year and our life.

5776 is starting off really well. Ten families have joined Beth Shalom since this spring, and we have seven more children enrolled in the Rose Family Early Childhood

Education Center than we budgeted for. We ended 5775 with a balanced budget, and for the second year in a row, we have exceeded our budgeted amount in pledges from our High Holiday appeal. Our congregation is attractive to new and existing mem-bers and offers positive experiences in our priority areas of prayer and spiri-tuality, congregational learning and member engagement. Let’s remind ourselves of two opportunities which are coming right up.

Do you feel like contributing your time and talent in some small way to our congregational communi-ty? On Sunday, November 8, in Gold-smith Hall, we’ll have our first “Com-mittee Jam.” We’ll start with bagels and coffee right after morning minyan at 9:15 am. At 9:30 am, representa-tives of most of our thirty committees will be at tables, so we can all explore how we might want to get engaged in our congregation. I’ve heard from some of you that you’re looking for an opportunity to serve that is more than “sitting around talking.” Well, sev-eral of our committees actually have volunteer opportunities. So look for those specific opportunities. Come together as a community for a fun evening. Come to “Denim & Diamonds” on Saturday, December

5, after Shabbat. Remember Cabaret last winter? It was sold out. We expect to sell out Denim and Diamonds this year, too. Not only is it fun (and a great dinner), but it’s our only an-nual fund raising event. Remember our budget depends on our dues, our High Holiday Appeal, and our annual fundraiser. Thankfully, we are gener-ous in fulfilling all three so that we may bring ourselves the experiences we seek from our kehillah, our sacred community. It is said that members of non-profit organizations can contribute in three ways: time, talent and treasure. I am grateful that we, as a congregation, are generous in all three categories.

Minyan Maker is Very Important

Parashat Hashavua Group Parashat Hashavua is an ongo-ing, monthly program that takes place on every third Shabbat of the month at 9 am, in the Board Room. The goal of this program is to engage its par-ticipants in a stimulating discussion of the Weekly Torah Portion in a friendly atmosphere, where the difference of opinions is respected, and questions

Minyan Maker was developed to insure there is a minyan every morn-ing and evening for every member of CBS who wants to recite Kaddish as a mourner or for a yahrtzeit. All CBS members who are not mourners or saying Kaddish for a yahrtzeit have a responsibility to do their part to help guarantee a daily minyan. During the week, we hold our minyanim at the Appleman Synagaogue at Village Sha-lom. We would like to recognize those who have attended through Minyan Maker during the past three months. Our Minyan Maker Regulars include: Sunday-Minyan Maven is Ron Coppaken, and attendees are Steve Azorsky, Jeff Blackman*, Ber-nie Fried*, Rabbi Glickman*, Susan Hamner*, Hannah Harris*, Richard Simon*, David Slusky and Gene Wolowski. Monday-Minyan Maven is Joel Goldman, and attendees are Jeff Blackman*, Paula Cohen*, Ted Gold-stein*, Rabbi Glickman*, Marshall

Gale* and Jimmy Rosenbloom*. Tuesday-Minyan Maven is Debra Rubin, and attendees are Arthur Berger*, Jeff Blackman*, Alan Edelman, Mel Glazer, Hanan Ham-mer, Larry Kalender*, Rhea Salasche and Peter Shapiro. Wednesday-Minyan Maven is Beryl Silberg, and attendees are Hazzan Ben-Yehuda*, Larry Cohen, Chuck Gasser and Berenice Haber-man. Thursday-Minyan Maven is Jimmy Rosenbloom, and attendees are Hazzan Ben-Yehuda*, Marshall Gale*, Rabbi Glickman*, Byron Ginsburg, Ted Goldstein* and Larry Kalender*. Friday-Minyan Maven is Ale-tha Simon, and attendees are Arthur Berger*, Jeff Blackman*, Peter Cabell, Paula Cohen*, Diane Federman and Sylvie Radvinsky*. Ted Goldstein, Norman Kahn and Bernie Fried are available in addi-tion to their “regular days”. Pinch hit-ters who come as they are needed are Erwin Abrams, Mike Abrams**,Elyse Block, Randy Block, Brian Brockman,

Of Blessed Memory,Marvin Gibian, 1927-2015 We note with great sadness on October 12, the death of Marvin Gibian, past president of Congrega-tion Beth Shalom, 1980-81. He was a fourth generation member of our congregation, also serving as president

Gavi Glickman, Jeff Goldenberg, Steve Israelite, Sid Kanter, Marcia Karbank, Eddie Meltzer, Richard Sil-berg, Elaine Singer**, Debbie Sosland-Edelman, Shira Zigler and Scott Zigler. Torah Readers are Alan Edel-man, Art Federman, Gavi Glickman, Jeff Goldenberg, Mara Lambert, Dan Margolies, Allan Reichman, Jimmy Rosenbloom, Avi Sonnenschien and Josh Sosland. Many of our “regulars” have also been with Minyan Makers from the beginning. Both Marvin Goldstein and Carla Klausner who attended morning minyan for a number of years have found it necessary to take a leave of absence, and both are missed. Those who attend morning minyan without signing in to Minyan Maker are urged to do so to give us an accurate number for the daily minyan. As you can see, Minyan Maker is a team effort, and we need more people to join the team.*Attend more than once a week** Have been Pinch Hitters since Minyan Makers was organized.

spanned over 50 years. Our condo-lences go out to his beloved wife, Evelyn, his two daughters and sons-in-law: Linda Gibian and Mark Fishman and Ellen and Jeremy Fenster, his 12 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchil-dren. May his memory be a blessing.

The USY Executive Vice Presi-dent, Emma Shapiro delivered a wonderful D’var Torah for Parashat Ha’Azinu to the Library Minyan on Shabbat, September 26. We would like to share it with our entire congre-gation. Unlike Moses, I was able to go to the promised land this summer. When I got off the plane in Israel, my friend and I knelt down and kissed the ground, happy and thankful that we finally made it. Our journey was not nearly as physically and emotion-ally difficult as that of the Israelites or people who were forced to escape turmoil in Europe in the mid 20th century, but it was extremely emotion-ally draining. We started off touring Prague, a beautiful city and learned about the lack of Jewish life. We spent our first Shabbat in a synagogue that

had very few active members. Most of them were people who recently found out about their Jewish heritage. Things like this make me think about what we could have been. We visited Terezin on our way to Germany, and this was my first time seeing one of the remaining institutions built by the Nazis. Terezin was built as a show place, an inaccurate representation of what was actually happening at all the other camps. Nazis filmed videos here in an attempt to portray that life was good and that the people were treated well. The next camp we visited was Majdanek. Standing at Majdanek had a much larger impact on me then vis-iting both Auschwitz and Auschwitz II (Birkenau). This was owed to the fact it was my first time seeing a concen-tration camp besides in pictures, and it has been kept completely intact, unlike the other two. Auschwitz has become a museum for the most part

and Birkenau was partially blown up by the Nazis. I spent the walk through Majdanek silent, tearing up once when I stood in a room filled to the top with shoes that belonged to innocent people. The second time I cried was at the memorial at the end of the camp. The memorial is a cir-cular shape with a hole in the center. The hole is filled up with human ashes that have been recovered. Every time I think back on those moments, it doesn’t seem real to me that I actually was there. While touring the camps I always noticed that people had their cameras out snapping photos in every room. Even in the gas chambers they were taking pictures of the fingernail scratches on the wall. I found this interesting because to me, these sights were something that would never leave my memory. (Part II of this D’var Torah will appear in the December Scroll.)

The Hebrew month of Mar Cheshvan, bitter Cheshvan, is for clergy and school direc-tors alike the time to reflect. We look back

at the last six to eight weeks and take a deep breath. I want to share with you what I see as I breathe deeply. The school year started smoothly with several exciting new develop-ments in curriculum. Last year we introduced the Hebrew Lab to our school. In the Hebrew Lab, students in grades 4 - 7 learn Hebrew together through games, listening stations, the Rosetta Stone interactive computer program, and one-on-one teacher-student interactions. This year we have gone deeper in the lab by focusing the curriculum on the skills of leading

t’fillah (services), and chanting Torah and Haftarah. Students work together with their friends in all grades towards their goals. The message we have cre-ated is that this skill, while helpful for Bar or Bat Mitzvah, is a Jewish skill that each student will be able to use throughout his or her life. In third through seventh grades, we are now in our second year of Etgar, the United Synagogue’s award-winning learning-through-doing cur-riculum. Students engage in text study that will not only help them to ac-quire knowledge and skills, but whose ultimate goal is to build their appetite for Jewish learning. In fifth through seventh grades, we have introduced a new class that is completely project-based, where stu-dents are learning about Jewish people

all over the world throughout the ages. In this way, we are bringing together the history of our people by focusing on historical figures who drove the development of theological, philo-sophical and practical ideas. Students will spend the year engaged in small-group work and class-presentations as they learn independently and then share what they have learned with the class. We look forward to a commu-nity-wide presentation of many of the projects the students create sometime in the spring. Next month, I’ll tell you all about what’s happening in High School! If you’d like to learn more about our school, or get involved in the School Committee, please feel free to call my office or drop me an email at [email protected].

When I started working at Beth Shalom 22 years ago, Elaine Pol-sky had a sign put on my bulletin board that said “Kindness is Contagious”. The faculty at Rose Family Early Childhood Educa-tion Center completely agrees! We teach Jewish Values as a core part of our curriculum. This year the main value we will stress is kindness and respect- CHESED. We now have Captain Chesed Capes!

Captain Chesed to the Rescue

When a child treats someone kindly and with respect, he is the most important super Hero/Shero, and he gets to wear the Captain Chesed cape! We believe we are creating a generation of children who will make our world a much better place because they will be kind caring people, one Captain Chesed at a time! Danielle Antes, an incredible mom who is filled with kindness, has made us 4 amazing capes for the 3-5 year old rooms! We are so excited about our new CAPTAIN CHESED pro-gram!
