Youth Director Position Manhattan First United Methodist Church is a growing and vibrant congregation located in a dynamic University town. Fellow members of FUMC,

During the past month, DonnaDee & I have been comforted more than you could possibly know by the countless expressions of Christian love and concern for our daughter and granddaughter over the loss of their husband and father, our son-in-law, Peter Anderson, after a three year battle with ALS. It is humbling to know so many of our friends have kept each of us in your thoughts and prayers. We communicate with DeeAnn daily, and she is quick to express the fact that she & Stephanie are strengthened by daily prayers from loved ones, neighbors, friends, and even those they have yet to meet. ALS is an insidious disease, and we all fear the thought of losing a loved one, but there was at least time to prepare, and Peter Anderson, ever the “planner”, thought everything through, and positioned DeeAnn & Stephanie well for the remainder of their life’s journey. They have asked us to thank each of you for helping them through this difficult transition, and to assure you they are doing fine. Pastor Troy told us all a few weeks ago about belonging to a “herd”, and we can assure you that DeeAnn feels comforted knowing that she is a part of such a large (and caring) herd.

Congregational Items of Interest YES! I Want to Help Raise the Roof!

You can not miss the scaffolding and workers on both the east and west side of our Sanctuary and roof. The project to fix the roof includes removing all of the red tile, replacing the deteriorated underlayment membrane, and then replacing the red tile. Access to the Courtyard and doors leading out to the Courtyard should be open on Sundays, but will be closed during the week while the east side of the roof is under repair. If you see caution tape, please do not cross it or enter that area.

Thank You! To date we have raised $140,618.92 toward the total cost of $207,000. Many thanks to those who have already given or pledged, and many thanks to those who will soon give or pledge. It's great to belong to a Church which responds in such fine fashion.

FUMC Bell Concert Sunday, May 5 at 7 pm in the FUMC Sanctuary, ringers from ages 9 to "long-time Senior Citizens" will play several pieces. All of the bell choirs at FUMC will perform, including our Young United Methodists (YUM) group. There is no admission, but a free-will offering will be taken for the Bell Choir Fund, which helps pay for ringers to attend various bell events and purchase bells and accessories.

Be a Beacon of Light in a Person's Life Become a Lay Visitor!

Lay Visitors visit an assigned homebound person once a month. To be trained, you would meet with Pastor Melanie for 30 minutes at any time which fits your schedule. Lay Visitors help ailing members know they are not forgotten by their God or their church home. Contact Melanie at 776-8821, ext. 16 or mmartin@fumcmanhattan.com for more information.

Rhapsody Ringers Bell Concert Friday, May 17 at 7 pm in the FUMC Sanctuary, the Rhapsody Ringers bell choir will perform. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

Think Globally…Eat “LOCAL”ly! Invite a friend or two to visit LOCAL food & friends for breakfast, lunch, or supper, the week of Sunday, April 28 through Saturday, May 4. Shepherd’s Crossing will receive 100% of profits or 4% of sales from that week, in addition to donations made to the jars within the restaurant.

Mission Moments Change the World

Thanks to all who have volunteered to participate in – or otherwise support – the Spring, 2013 FUMC effort to Change the World. As of April 20, numerous projects are scheduled. Projects and project leaders (if known at this time) are as follows:

Homes: Elaine Baxter (Sisters of Selah, leaders); Glenna West (Dale Bradley, leader); Ora Mae Kirkendal (Mark Chalfant, leader); Church member of Ogden UMC; Jon Klimek (Sean and Roxie Tomlinson, leaders); Linda McCann; Eva Barlow (David Miller, leader); Lynette Ford, tree trimming, which will require a chain saw.

FUMC Campus: Third floor of Harris Activity Center, Faithlinks Sunday School Class (Nick Minocha, leader); Staining/painting, and other projects to be announced (Lynn Blecha and Doug Regester, leaders).

Other locations: Deck staining at UMC District Superintendent Parsonage.

Lunch, including United Methodist Men as grill masters (Josh Roe, leader); Kitchen (Alyn West and Linda McCann, leaders).

According to Myers, project leaders and volunteers are still needed; two shifts (from 10 a.m. until noon and from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.) are available, and volunteers are invited to a complimentary lunch (served in Fellowship Hall) from noon until 12:30 p.m.

Volunteers are encouraged (but not required) to wear Change the World T-shirts, which will be on sale Sunday, May 5 during the

Fellowship Hour and continuing until 12:30 p.m. Special orders also should be picked up during this time. T-shirts are all cotton, teal blue with yellow logos (FUMC, front) and Change the World (back)

and are $10.

Community Garden Update

The FUMC community Garden is coming along nicely! We have seeds in the ground and are eager to see them sprouting in the next few weeks. The children had a fun time planting seeds during Children's time in Worship last week and those will be in the green house at KSU waiting for transplant later in the spring.

We look forward to making progress in making the garden a worshipful place with the help of Change the World Sunday and several FUMC Community Groups. We will need people to water daily when the rains become more infrequent and all are welcome to come pull weeds or just stop by to pray over the produce and find sanctuary in the garden. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Pastor Patrick at: pastorpatrick@fumcmanhattan.com. If you just want to see the plot you can visit the Riley Ln gardens; a map of the plots is on the community tool shed that will help direct you to our plot.

E-Bay for Missions ‘Tis the season to do a little spring cleaning, and sift through items no longer needed – or wanted. Before tossing unwanted items, please consider contacting Cindy Burr. She is a FUMC member who volunteers to sell collectibles and other unique items to raise money for Church mission projects, including youth missions. One item was a child’s doll, purchased for $2, and stored in its original box, which sold for more than $200. A high-quality watch no longer wanted by a family brought several hundred dollars, as did a dusty souvenir from Chicago’s Century of Progress. Burr said old watches, 35 MM cameras from the 1970s, dolls, toys, clothing (including hats) from the 1960s, record players and even small sewing machines sell well. According to Burr, there also is a demand for unusual Hallmark items, sports memorabilia, and, of course, K-State and other University items. For more information, contact Burr at 537-2268. If desired, donors may request a receipt for a tax deduction when items are sold.

Groceries For God Did you know there is a way to shop for groceries and help the church at the same time? The Groceries For God program allows you to buy gift cards for Dillons, Hy-Vee or Ray’s directly from our church and those stores give us a percentage back from those gift cards. There is no additional cost to you or the church for the cards. The percentage given to the church is used to fund unbudgeted items for FUMC mission and other projects. It’s a win-win program. Groceries for God cards are sold each Sunday, or call J. Lester and Olive Hooper at 539-6855 to purchase. Interested in funding for an unbudgeted item? Prairieland Foods Can Offer Savings on Groceries FUMC members and friends often can save on food bills when participating in the monthly Prairieland Food packaging and distribution program. Monthly menus, which typically include five meats and seasonal fruits and vegetables, can be purchased as a “Prairie Pak” for $29; specialty foods, such as a recent “Cheesecake Lover’s Dream,” offering four cheesecakes with 14 servings each (produced by a well-known company) and priced at $27 also are available. Two hours of volunteering in church or community are requested of participants, with an additional hour requested for specialty packs. Volunteer time is not requested when giving a love gift of food for Ogden Friendship House, as many in the Church do. Mission Moments Harvesters Report

David Miller, FUMC project coordinator, reported that the April 16 distribution from the mobile food pantry served 181 households, with a total of 715 people (336 adults, ages 18 years and older; 281 children, less than 18 years of age, and 98 seniors). Distribution is regularly scheduled on the third Tuesday of the month. If you would like to volunteer, please arrive about 9:30 am at the drive-thru building north of Pottorf Hall. Distribution is usually complete by noon.

Young Adult Fellowship FUMC Young Adults (23ish - 35ish) will meet the second Sunday of every month for food, fun and fellowship. We will meet for lunch around 12:30 pm, directly after the 11 am service in the Legends Room at Kite's in Aggieville. Our first lunch will be May 12! This group is geared for people without kids.

Mothers Group Forming "Moments of Meaning” (MOM) is a new group for mothers of infants through mothers of high school students to gather together for fellowship, support and to grow with one another. This group will meet every Wednesday from 9:15 - 11 am beginning May 8 on the 3rd floor of the Education Center. Free childcare will be provided upon request by calling 785-776-2422 at least 48 hours in advance.

Life, Near Death, and Resurrection (Of a Beautiful Window)

This new, old window, resurrected from the past served from 1909 - 38. Now reunited at last, to serve again with sister window (to the courtyard it faces), To light and be enjoyed from new fellowship spaces.

Our new building project revealed an unexpected reward. An unlikely rebirth, considering that it was stored seventy-four years in the coal bin, a dark and dank tomb. Not a good place to be, but there was no other room.

Tormented by rust and decay and waters of a flood. Thanks to caring people who cleared out the mud. When touched by a visitor, stained glass fell to the floor. If not saved by “connecting link,” it would be nevermore.

Now it’s first time to face east, letting through the morning sun. More beautiful than ever. Check those colors, one by one. Seems almost miraculous, but perhaps there’s a reason, This resurrection would occur during this Easter season!
