Captain Scott O’Grady once said,

It wasn't the reward that mattered or the recognition youmight harvest.

It was your depth of commitment, your quality of service, the product of yourdevotion – These were the things that counted in life.

When you gave purely, the honour in giving, and that was honour enough.

Your District Governor has accepted a challenge to raise $8000 in yourDistrict for Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Researchfoundation (ALCCRF).

It is hoped with your help and support; your district will present acheque on the main stage at the MD Convention in Townsville inMay 2018, along with the other districts within MD 201. Attached tothis letter you will find some fun virtual sausage characters.

If everyone of your members purchased a character, it would be agreat start to reaching our goal! If every club matches theirmember’s donation, we would be three quarters of the way there.

If any club decided to take it one step further and sell them to thepublic at BBQ’s, shopping centres etc., your district wouldoverwhelmingly succeed in your goal! All funds raised need to bemade out to your district and then sent to your Cabinet treasurer, to

be collated until your district goal is reached. If you return the individual virtualsausage characters to your zone chairman with the names ofthe contributors, they will be displayed on a ‘HUGE’ wall ofhonour at the Multiple District Convention in Townsville.

By helping this worthwhile cause, you the members will beresponsible for helping ALCCRF reach their quest to have a100% survival rate from Childhood Cancer. I thank you inadvance for your support of our 2017/18 District Governorschallenge and I look forward to seeing your district representedon the main stage of the MD convention in Townsville. Did you know that Australia Post have items (Postcards & Medallions) that can be purchased to celebrate the Lions Centenary? What is Cricket?

After watching “The Ashes” on TV day after day, I now think that I understand the game.

Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.

When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are

out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in andthe next man in goes out and goes in...

ENVIRONMENTAL FROM LIONS INTERNATIONAL RE PHOTO CONTEST UPDATE Technology is changing the way we connect, take photos and share contentwith our communities and the world.

To take advantage of new opportunities created through social media andexciting tools like the MyLion app, the Marketing Communications Committeehas recommended that LCI develop new contests that are designed for ourmobile-friendly, instant-sharing culture.

This will help us engage even more Lions and Leos and give us a great way toshare our service stories with the world. Due to this new direction, LCI will nolonger host the Environmental Photo Contest or other photo contests at thistime.

We will be announcing a new contest hosted in the MyLion app after June, when the app will be available globally. We will share details with Lions andLeos as soon the new contest is announced. We’re looking forward toengaging Lions in more innovative ways than ever before.

THE LIONS CLUB OF BRUNSWICK MULLUMBIMBY‘AUSTRALIA’S LONGEST CONTINUOUS SERVING LIONS’(SUBMITTED BY PDG TONY CORNELL)John Shirley of the Lions Club of Kyogle has 65 years’ service with the oneclub. Lion Noel James of the Lions Club of Brunswick Mullumbimby also has65 years’ service with his club. Both these outstanding Lions are separated byabout 4 months

It is not surprising that this should be so because the two clubs are in Region1 of Q1 the Heartland of Lionism in Australia.

The Members of the Brunswick Mullumbimby Club feel it is appropriate toenlighten fellow Lions of the exploits and achievements of Lion Noel James.

Noel James was born in Mullumbimby NSW in 1928, he had three brothers.Noel and his brother Bill James formed a partnership and opened a hardwarestore known as James’s Hardware (Now known as Mitre 10)

In 1952 James D. Richardson was about to charter the fifth Lions Club inAustralia, Brunswick Mullumbimby Noel was not a Charter Member, he joinedthe new Club about three months after Charter. (PDG Ray Phippard was theclub’s secretary)

Noel became the Club President in 1959, he went on to become the Presidentagain in 1978, all Noël’s brothers became members and all held thePresident’s position.

Noel tells of some of the exploits and pursuits tackled by the handful of LionsClubs that were chartered in the early days. One of these was the seriousproblem created by a law that obliged hotels and other licence premises toclose at 6pm each day, drinker had to be off the premises my 6:20 pm. It wastraditionally known as “The Six O’clock Swill” It’s the sort of thing that couldtake the fun out of any Lions meeting.

James D.Richardson was the publican of the Hotel Brunswick at BrunswickHeads; the new club would meet at his hotel. It did not take long for the fourother newly chartered clubs to realise that they were all less than an hoursdrive to the Hotel Brunswick, All five clubs, Burns Mullum, Kyogle,Murwillumbah. Lismore, Coolangatta Tweed made James Richardson’s pubtheir meeting place. As guests of the publican and in a private room theymanaged to turn the 6 o'clock curfew into: Whatever o’clock.

A Pride of Lions can find answers to any problem.

These days Noel gets about on a Mobility Scooter, his eyesight is failing. Hestill gets to some club meetings His enthusiasm for the principles of Lionsremains as strong as ever.

Photo shows Lion Noel James being introduced to Conventioneers atLismore by PDG Tony Cornell.

MESSAGE FROM DR CARLOS SALOMONFebruary is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and a time when the profileof ovarian cancer, its causes and cures, is highlighted across Australia.

As a Lions Medical Research Foundation Senior Research Fellow, my teamand I are at the forefront of ovarian cancer research. At the Exome BiologyLaboratory, we are working on how human exosomes can be isolated, characterised and what their role is in evaluating their clinical utility asbiomarkers of disease and therapeutic interventions. My specific projectrelates to tumour-derived exosomes as a signature of ovarian cancer, andliquid biopsies as indicators of tumour progression. As Study Leader, I explorehow exosomes, which are produced by cells and contain genetic material andproteins, contribute to the development of ovarian cancer.

In the past five years, the understanding of how cells communicate with eachother in both healthy and diseased states has undergone a significant shift. We have learnt that by characterising the exosome profile of early stagecancer, individuals with ovarian cancer can be identified at an early stagewhile the disease is still treatable.

My team and I have been able to isolate extracellular vesicles and measurethe level of a particular type of exosome. This means detection of early-stageovarian cancer is possible by looking for a specific type of exosome that testspositive for tumour biomarkers. There is an urgent need for a reliablediagnostic marker to allow for early detection of ovarian cancer, and thiswould improve survival rates dramatically. When the cancer isdiagnosed earlier, women face a much better chance of a full recovery. So this February, I am asking all Lions Clubs of Queensland and NorthernNew South Wales to fundraise on behalf of Lions Medical ResearchFoundation and in support of the work my team and I are undertaking toensure we develop cures and treatments for ovarian cancer.Thank you for your support to date, and for your support into the future.

Dr Carlos Salomon
