What’s going on at Chiller Skates this year?

Mm mm. OK. Just doing boards. You know just do-

ing top decks and then I will be doing some small-

er runs of skis. Kinda just like last year, just feeding the locals, the Boise guys and sending decks up your guys’s way. Two sizes on the skis, but pretty limited runs of production. There will be a 42” tapered reverse camber and then the 51” like Eric is riding in the ad. That’s about the gist of it. Are you recording this?

Yeah.

There is a 38” and a 36” top deck and they are 9 3/4” and 9 1/4” widths.

So are you guys making complete boards?

I’m making trucks, skis and decks. I’m not mak-ing a ton of stuff. It is mostly staying local.

Who’s gonna take credit for the sweet grip that is the product of the year, Chiller or Florida Powder?

Is that the product of the year?

Yeah although it doesn’t seem to have a name.

Yeah it is a five pound... I don’t know... It’s funny because Ambition Snowskates sent me a link to that company like

“ It is mostly staying local.”

three years ago. And I was like “I don’t know. I’ll just buy this hydro foam shit.”

The stuff with the dia-mond pattern on it?

Yeah the really bad stuff. I got that stuff because it was smaller. Then I ordered up the other stuff and as soon as I got it I was like this is great. So I called up Adam at Florida and right away he put in a big order. So we are both running that grip. Industry grip, six pound grip. I don’t know what you call it.

Where can people buy it?

Well...I guess, Boyd Hill has got a bunch of it on their web site. I don’t really sell the grip solo. Well, I do. If people call me up then I will send it to them but I usually just get enough for my boards.

Is Adam selling it?

He’s got it. It’s hard to get too excited about selling a bunch of grip. What do you think that stuff would cost?

I don’t know. So if you want the sweet grip you have to get a Chiller Board?

Yeah. I will be making Subs, Decks and Trucks. Do you want the prices?

Yeah I want the prices.

I’m still working on that... Decks are 100 bucks all gripped out. There is gonna be some cheaper ones too with recycled graphics for the people trying to get a deal.

How do we get the deal?

E-mail me or go to the blog.

“It’s hard to get too excited about selling

a bunch of grip.”

What sizes of skates are you offering? Do you have photos?

Last year we made a mold for large top-decks, which produced decks in the 38" to 41" range. These decks received great feedback from various riders, so this monster deck will be back in the line-up. We also have a smaller mold that will make a con-temporary skateboard deck at 32"-35" long, which will be perfect for smaller riders or someone who likes a smaller bi-deck set-up. What kind of skates are you making? Top decks? Skis? Powder surf/skate?

...This past off season we have been focus-ing on ways to speed up our SINGLE snowskates production. Our energy will go into producing a classic urban or park style single deck de-signed to shred cold snowy streets. Our stock model will be an 8 ply "channelled" maple deck laminated to state of the art sintered bases at 35"x 8.5" in size. In addition to that, we are so stoked to offer a powder single surf skate... with a soul of a surfboard and a body made from laminated maple and p-tex. through feet of deep powder "strapless"....this "surfboard of the snow" has been tested and the ride defies description.. 50"x 12" What are you doing for grip?

All of boards will be offered with EVA foam or hydro turf grip or a combination of both.

Where can people get

them? How much?

Currently people can get info and boards from the blog: de-cembersnowskates.blogspot.com or e-mail directly at [email protected]

What’s new at 0910 for 2011?

We are excited to bring our snowskate trucks to market. We feel the style, quality, and fine detail definitely set us apart from other brands. The trucks will be available for pur-chase the 1st of No-vember on our web site (www.0910snowskate.com) along with our new complete snowskates.

What sizes of boards do you offer?

The snowskate size remains the same as last year, being 34. 25 inches (87 cm) long and 4.93 inches (12.5 cm) wide for the sub deck and high concave, 33 inches

(83.10 cm) long and 9 inches (22.85 cm ) wide for the top deck. We are working on a few dif-ferent kinds of grip. At this point we still do not know which one we are going to offer, but it is going to be something new in the market.

Is snowskating growing in Europe?

About snowskating in Europe, the sport is still rather alternative com-paring to snowboarding and skiing. There are a few hardcore teams in Switzerland, France, Germany and Austria who push snowskat-ing forward but there is plenty of room for growth for sure.

Any events or contests?

We are going to set up a snowskate Jam in France or Switzerland this winter but we are not sure about the date and the location yet. We will make sure to keep you guys informed.

Do most resorts allow snowskating on their lifts?

Some resorts allow snowskates on their lifts and some don’t. There is really no general rule about this. So if any one is planning a trip to Europe, you should ask around (send an e-mail or call the resort) to make sure that binding

free will be welcome at a specific resort…

Hopefully kids will start riding binding free more than before thanks to proper equipment (un-

available in the past) and thanks to the internet (damn I wish there were snowskate videos widely available back in the days).

Where can people get them?

Our web site is go-ing to be fully packed with fresh content and new products starting November 1st 2010 - make sure to check it out then.

One love.

What’s new at Boyd Hill?

Trying to have one of ev-erything so we are a full service snowskate supply. Top to bottom, leashes, skates, trucks and decks.

Are you making all this stuff yourself?

Yeah pretty much, the leashes are brand new. They are ours, we’re growing now. We got Rocker Trucks so every-thing is Rocker compat-ible. Our skis have the 1.625 hole pattern that is the narrower one like Ralston uses.

The same hole pattern Ralston uses?

Yeah the narrower 1.625,

which with the tapered subs makes way more sense than the fat Lib Tech hole pattern.

What sizes of subs do you have?

The main production one we have right now is a 53” or 109cm. It is a tapered sub with hand made poplar cores. We are shaping the profiles of our cores all here at the shop and they are super duper Ollie ma-chines and all mountain carvers, super strong, ollie poppers.

Lots of people seem to be going to that tapered shape.

Yeah, it makes more

sense. If you look at twin ski technology... our main builder TJ is the guy who invented the twin tip ski. It’s documented he built the first twin tip ski in the early 90’s and back then he was making shorter twin tip skis but... even if you look at twin tip skis now they are all tapered. They are all tapered because they don’t want to wash around backwards. If they are the same width in the front as the back they will want to wash around backwards. So to have a snowskate be tapered like a ski, it will track forward properly in all conditions. You have to have a tapered edge. We experimented

last year with wider twin tips and we couldn’t keep them going straight. It wants to wash around backwards but the ta-pered side cut is working great and we are gonna do the big mountain one this year as well with a tapered side cut similar to a Florida Powder Skate.

Where can people get your boards?

Everything is available at boydhill.com. Everything is pretty much direct from us right now.

Are you guys selling the 6 pound grip that is the product of the year but nobody seems to have a name for it?

Yeah we have sheets in like three different colors.

Does it have a name?

Yeah it is all Boyd Hill Grip. Any ways the cool thing we are doing before I forget we are doing a “Pro Search” this year. So just like your chance to be a pro snowskater. So whoever wins the pro contest - you know, best footage, best photos, best potential and best ambassador of the sport. The next model we make is gonna be an enter your

“They are selling faster than we can

make them.”

What’s new at Lib Tech?

Still making stuff, we are still doing it. We’ve been pretty swamped because everybody wants Lib Tech stuff right now and we have been mak-ing lots of skateboards. Then all of these little kids all of a sudden want banana snowboards in little sizes. So it has been pretty nuts for the guy that makes the little things at Mervin’s world.

How many skates are you guys making?

Plenty of them, but they are selling faster than we can make them.

Pretty much the same as last year but a little smaller?

Yeah the smaller one with the new graphic. It is

model out next year.

Are you guys doing any

events next winter?

Yeah we help out Chiller Decks with the Chiller

Cross at Schwietzer and then we will have an invitational on the actual Boyd Hill like a small local contest and then there are a couple of other moun-tains in the area like Silver and Mt. Spokane and I think we are gonna team up with Chiller Decks and host a couple of more Skate

Crosses.

like the updated Toronto with the C2 and every-thing Lib Technology has to offer.

What are you doing for grip?

It’s the same old foam grip.

With Bent Metal Trucks?

Yeah... and you can put “Sigh” in there, the same old Bent Metal Trucks. If I had my way everyone of those things would come with Rock-ers but that is a whole different issue.

What is the best way to get a new Lib Tech skate? I noticed that a lot of stores don’t have them.

They don’t have them yet because we are making so many skateboards. We are just barely in the last few weeks get-ting into making the snowskates so you will definitely have them in the stores by Thanks-giving. They will be officially out. Then the 43” ski will be available as a separate unit. So if you are a fan of the 43” ski, now you can get it separate. Then the 48” ski is gonna be pretty

much the exact same as last year except it will have C2 and new graphics and I am trying to push an updated version of the Pow-der Skate. Well, it is kinda a powder skate... more of an all ter-rain ski. Hopefully we can get that out some-time.

So the best place to by one is from a Lib tech dealer, not a web page?

If you can, buy them in the shops. if you can find them in the shops, sup-port the shops. But if you really want one, just get it however you can.

Are you guys back-ing any contests this year?

I don’t know. That is a question for Pete Saari be-cause I have no idea. Probably the Olympics I would assume because we always back the local stuff and we should also be talking Pete into back-ing the race at Snoqualmie, the massacre and start backing that shit up.

What’s going on at Circuit Skates? Are you guys still in business? Do

you make anything?

Yeah, I am definitely the most horrible business man of all time but that is OK. I am starting out by trying to influ-ence the coming season by making boards for the deepest powder and then gradually going to boards for hard pack. Hopefully this will influence the upcoming season.

I’m going to make some powderskates, just working on some new

shapes for the 140cm Powder Surfer and maybe a 145 skate.

What exactly is a pow-der surfer?

The single deck. The simplest board you can ride with no straps for your hands or feet.

What kind of grip are you riding on that thing?

EXTREEME GRIP!

That’s all?

I got a custom pack so it is like one solid piece of Extreme Grip.

Does it cover the whole board?

36 inches.

So you are cutting down on your production of shorter boards for hard pack?

I barely make anything.

I start making boards then I get distracted by riding. Then I make a few more and that is how it goes. I am definitely doing a low production, I hate mass produced shit. Like I said I am the worst business man of all time.

But you guys have one of the best teams?

Yeah, we do.

Can anybody buy these boards? Are they avail-able?

“I barely make anything. I start making boards then I get

distracted by riding.”

Mainly in Nelson (BC) and online.

If someone went online and bought one would it really show up?

It will. (Laughter) Well not at the moment.

You just contradicted yourself.

If you went to buy it in the near future... I’m building them right now

give me a break.

Alright good enough.

What’s new a t Minus 7?

I got a new production facility up at the top of the Summit on highway 80 , the Kingvale off ramp at the top of Sierra Nevada. Basically gonna have the presses and assemble all snowskates at the facility there. We are basically gonna have a shop devoted to snowskates. We will sell some crap to the tour-ists also, gotta fleece the tourists for some money. But we are gonna try and focus on snowskates and snowskate manu-facturing so I am real excited about that. We are also partnering with the Kingvale Terrain Project. They are gonna

“Right now we are gonna see how many Gordini

goggles and plastic sleds we can sell to morons.”

have some snowskate friendly terrain up there. We are trying to branch out from the Summit, the Summit on down we are gonna be at Boreal, Kingvale and as always the Donner Ski Ranch. The first week-end in April , once again the Minus 7 Melee 3rd annual.

Wow you already an-swered all of my ques-tions. You have been preparing.

Excellent!

I could kind of hear Jill chiming in back there but I couldn’t really hear her.

The real next thing is we

are basically pressing our own top decks and we can make custom shapes. We are working with Pilot Snowboards to make the subs. We still have Jake’s Minus 7 Rockers we are putting on there. I’m stoked on Rocker’s product. LET’S BE HONEST WITH EVERY-ONE, so we are proud to have the Minus 7 Rock-ers on there. We are gonna be doing a park ski, the symmetrical top deck/truck/ski. We are also working on a mid mountain board and we

definitely have a powder ski coming out. We are gonna be working all of the areas we can. Head up to Kingvale and you will see our shop. It will say Minus 7 on the side of the building. You can see Highway 80 from our doorstep and they can see us as they go by.

What are you guys doing for grip?

Basically 1/4 inch neo-prene with adhesive back. It has a skate aesthetic you know. It

Interview with Kurt Zapata

Page 23: Vol 7 Issue 1

looks like grip tape. It is a little thicker and softer than most and I prefer it. When it gets Icy you can crack the ice off and it really grips your shoe but you can still move them around.

Is your shop going to have shoes?

It would be nice. Right now we are gonna see how many Gordini goggles and plastic sleds we can sell to morons on Thanksgiving, Then yeah, heck yeah. But we gotta fleece the tourist for awhile.

The Minus 7 Cartel?

That’s right, if they want it we will sell it and if they don’t know if they want it we will push it on them.

“if they want it we will sell it and if they don’t know if

they want it we will push it on

them.”

Page 24: Vol 7 Issue 1

What’s new at Fuse?

Well we have diversi-fied as you know. We are making all different kinds of snowskates. Flat decks, 4X’s of course and what I have been calling the 1X which throws a lot of people off but it goes with the 4X idea. Basically a BI-Deck and everything is moving forward with that. I am starting with a bigger model for pow. Some of the stuff I had last Spring for samples seemed to work pretty

good. I tweaked a couple of little things and am basically run-ning with it. A 115 and a 116 with a lot of shape. Wide nose, wide tail, lots of side cut and pretty soft with rocker nose and tail. It is surprising how well it works in deep ass pow.

Where are you making all of these boards?

Those, in a big factory in Ching Chong China. It

is not that technical and they can turn them over pretty quickly. That is where those are going. The shorter ones, The General, which is like a 38” ski is being milled right here in Crested Butte in a ski factory. They have my mold for the ski that I had last Winter. I’m gonna tweak the shape but the profile is going to stay the same, more shape, more width for those but a little bit shorter because it is a 38”.

With the Flat Decks I’m not sure if you heard this yet of not. The deal is not sealed but a certain company in Canada is going to be making our Flat Decks. That’s in the works and it is probably gonna happen. They seem to make the best flat decks around and I am sure they are going to be quality.

What are you guys doing for grip?

Pretty much the EVA foam with Fuse Spikes. I think the plastic spikes work good. You might have to cut them in half to make it fit on a wider deck.

Are you guys backing or organizing any events this year?

I would love to say yes to that (laughter). I have dreamed about being able to host an event here in Crested Butte and I don’t think it is out of the question. I would like to do something on the mountain or in the backcountry, maybe with a cat ski opera-tion. It would be cool to organize something that was just back country with machines so you can build up jumps. Pretty

much like Hurricane Ridge event, just keep it back country style. Or if the mountain will allow us I don’t have a problem doing it there. But I wanna make it pretty sweet so people will travel to it because there is not tons of local but maybe there will be by then.

But you guys are in-volved with the X-games?

Yeah, yeah. We will be involved with the X-games again. I think of the X-Games as being a little different. It is more like hosting a quote on quote snowskate park and just kinda telling people what it is. You just kinda pull them into the corral, if they are little kids or skat-ers or whoever and the get a little taste of it. Bi-Decks, Flat Decks, 4X’s all of it but it is small. We try to make it as good as possible, which is a task to make it legit. It is mostly for Flat-Deckers. It is definitely not an X-Games event. The trophies are cool.

“I wanna make it pretty sweet so

people will travel “

What’s new at Florida Powder Skates?

We are just trying to stay in business. I just got a new full time job and I am trying to make Powder Skates on the side. I don’t know. I don’t really know what is going on. I’ve got like 40 boards.

40 new boards?

Yeah, I am just making like 40 boards total this year. Pretty much the same boards as last year. There is going to be a couple of new ones but they are going to be for friends.

So who is going to take credit for the sweet grip that is the product of the year?

The grip?

Yeah I asked Mark and he didn’t have a name for it. Bryce said it was Boyd Hill grip.

Oh, yeah I don’t have a name for it either. It’s just EVA foam with some adhesive on it. It needs a more marketable name.

They called it 6 pound Ram foam or something?

Yeah, it’s 6 pound foam, but it does not have to be 6 pound Ram foam.

Is any 6 pound foam the same?

Well, 6 pound closed cell EVA. It has to be closed cell otherwise it absorbs water. Like the Lib Tech stuff was kinda open

cell so it absorbed water. Same with the hydro turf - that stuff absorbs water too it just kinda glazes over.

If it’s closed cell then the snow doesn’t stick?

Yeah, if it is closed cell it won’t stick as much.

Where can people buy one of your 40 boards?

They can go to my web site. I think Jordan has some too and that guy in Hood River, at snowskate.com. The snowskate business is pretty slow so I am hoping people get more

motivated.

“I am hop-ing people get more

motivated.”

Product of the year

Some call it EVA foam. Some call it RAM foam. Some call it Boyd Hill Grip. Some call

it 6 pound grip. No matter what you call it, Starfish is calling it the product of the year.

After years of being plagued by Icy, slip-pery and dangerous grip the more savvy snowskate manufac-turers seem to have unanimously set-tled on this grip. It comes in cool colors, it is readily available and actually works. The closed cell technology keeps the ice off and it is just soft enough to grip your feet. The

smooth non dia-mond shaped sur-face makes it easy to clean the snow off. Let’s face it, better grip=better skating and better skating means more fun.

Demand the best. Demand EVA, Ram, 6 pound, Boyd Hill Grip. Get it where you can and save yourself the hassle. We’ve tried them all and this grip works the best.

Page 28: Vol 7 Issue 1

Does anybody make shoes be-sides vans?

There are several skateboard shoe com-panies with “Water Resistant” models, and some have more insulation than regu-lar skate shoes- but no company is cur-rently making a shoe/boot made specifically for snowskating. The 2010/11 Vans Mt. Edition is probably the best shoe currently made. The grip of the Vans Mtn. Edition is very good but the upper part of the shoe is not quite adequate

Are they available in the USA?

The Vans Mt Edition shoe is only available at shops that carry

“NO SNOWSKATE SHOE = NO CHAIR LIFT ACCESS!”

Vans Snowboard boots, and most shops that carry Vans snowboard Boots did not order the Vans Mt edition Shoe. They are now available but they are very rare. (Call Pluto.)

Are there any new shoes? Or anything new about the old shoes?

The 2007/8 Vans Ico 3 and the 2008/9 Vans Ico 4 are con-sidered to be the best snowskate shoes ever made. They have great grip on a snowskate and a neo-prene cuff around the ankle to keep snow out of the shoes. It is a high top with a Velcro strap you can

tighten for more ankle support. Buy them if you can find them. (Call Pluto.)

What is the impor-tance of a sport or activity having it's own shoe?

Any activity is con-sidered just a “game, hobby or toy,...” Until there is a shoe specifi-cally made for the ac-tivity. Once there is a shoe made specifically for the activity it is considered to be a le-gitimate sport. Even Frisbee golf has it’s own shoe. Even Curl-ing and Wrestling- If snowskating is going to get in the Olympics we gotta have a shoe.

What can snow skat-

ers do to encourage companies to make better shoes?

Maybe start an e-mail petition/campaignWith Vans to remake the Vans Ico 4. but it must have a graphic of a bi-deck snowskate on the side and on the heel! The logos will let the disagreeable lift op-erator know that the shoe/boot is made for snowskating.

would need to indicate which Vans Snow-board boot retailer the petitioner would buy the shoes from. This way Vans could tell the retailer that 30 people indicated that they would buy the shoe, so they need to pre order 30 pairs of shoes.

Other relevant snowskate shoe rant-ings?

Most ski resorts (Especially in the south) have a rule indicating “SNOW-

BOARDERS MUST HAVE SNOWBOARD BOOTS” to ride. The ski resorts will not allow you to ride the chair with regular shoes or even hiking boots. If snowskaters have shoes that are made for snowskat-ing, they should be allowed on the slopes. If snowskaters don’t have shoes made for

snowskating, the resorts may require the use of snow-board boots to ride a snowskate.

If snowskating does not get a legitimate footwear model that is approved by resorts, snowskat-ing will eventually be eliminated from chair lifts. NO

SNOWSKATE SHOE=NO CHAIR ACCESS! (Especially in Tennessee). (For sure at Ober Gatlin-burg!) Snowskate compa-nies should promote a stronger future for snowskating by build-ing more skate spe-cific shoes and boots.
