The nation will celebrate 150th birth anniversary of father of nation Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd October,2020. Mahatma ji set high standards for social service and practised what he preached. His vision for gram swaraj is now being promoted by our Honourable Prime Minister with his mission "AtmaNirbhar Bharat. During last 5 years, our government promoted various schemes to realise the dream of Father of the Nation Mahatma ji. Swacch Bharat Abhiyan has created far reaching impact in cleanliness of our country. The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Abhiyan paved way for empower-ment of our sisters through various legislations that created social security for women. The schemes for food security and Medicare reform have reached millions of people who were deprived of the same.

As responsible citizens of this country each member of The Bharat Scouts and Guides should commit himself/herself to create awareness among the common people about the benefits of Government schemes and help them to avail the benefits.

The unlock process after Covid-19 situation is demand-ing more responsibility on our part. We should follow the instructions, namely, the mask, hand washing protocol and 6 feet distance, as safety measures while going out for work and study.. Let every member of the organisation continue to work as Covid Warrior to keep the spread of Covid under control and keep the promise to serve the country.

With best wishes on Gandhi Jayanti

“It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.” Happy Peace Day to all. Peace is not just mere absence of violence, peace is, I think, the manifestation of human compassion. It comes from being able to contribute the best that we have, toward creating a world that supports everyone.

As said by Robert Baden-Powell “A week of camp life is worth six months of theoretical teaching in the meeting room”, the Bharat Scouts and Guides organized a “National Adventure Camp-cum- COVID-19 Awareness Campaign 2020” at National Youth Campus (NYC) in Gadpuri under ‘Fit India Movement’ from 9 to 13 September 2020. The camp had a good partaking of 72 participants and staff. Around 70 COVID Warriors were also felicitated for their efforts and endurance during the tough times of the pandemic.

BSG is conducting a series of ongoing webinars on WAGGGS relating to different subjects and topics which shall continue for a month.

The New Education Policy (NEP), 2020 formulated by our Government has brought several reforms in the Education system in India. The policy aims to transform India’s educational structure by 2030 by outlining comprehensive framework to holistically improve the quality of schooling along with building competencies of teachers through various schemes and missions.

I would like to notify you all about the centenary celebration of ‘100- years of Rangering’, which was to be celebrated this month, has been extended for a period of 3 months i.e. till 31st December 2020.

Best Wishes and Peaceful Greetings to all.

I am very happy to note that Scouts, Guides, Rovers, Rangers and Unit Leaders all over India are participating in yoga activities under Fit India Hit India Movement of Govt. of India to keep our body and mind healthy by practicing yoga in our daily life. They are also spreading the message of benefits of yoga in the community.

ndGandhi Jayanti is celebrated on 2 October every year to mark the birth anniversary of the most prominent leader of the Indian freedom struggle. Popular for his non-violent movement, the purpose of this day is to honour the iconic leader. We hope that all the members of the Bharat Scouts and Guides will also celebrated this important day in a grand manner. As this year is the closing of 150th birth centenary of Mahatma, we all

ndhave to do lot of activities and celebrate 2 October in a large scale.

We have planned to organise the closing ceremony of 100 years of Rangering in the month of September, 2019, but due to pandemic situation of Covid-19 in the country it would not be possible. Now, the closing ceremony will be held in the four months from Sept. to December, 2020 virtually.

The Union Cabinet has approved the New Education Policy 2020. One of the stated aims of the policy is to instil a “deep-rooted pride” in being Indian, not only in thought, but also in spirit, intellect, and deeds as well as to develop knowledge, skills, values, and dispositions that support responsible commitment to human rights, sustainable development and living, and global well-being. We are planning to develop our strategy to find a place in the New Education Policy. Lets work together and sent your suggestions to NHQ to have meaningful strategy on NEP.

Trainer’s Corner

(…..continued from previous issue)

The daily programme started at 6a.m. with the blow of Kudoo horn by B.P. himself. This must be the Scouting Sunrise day. This was followed by wash, cocoa, clean-up campsite, subject of the day (introduced during the

campfire of the previous night), physical drill-led by B.P., Flag break and Prayers. Afterbreakfast, Scouting exercises were taken up. After Lunch and some rest, the boys went for Games and Competitions on the day`s subject. The day ended with Dinner and Campfire. BADEN-POWELL had formulated a successful teaching strategy-the topic to be considered was introduced informally and in an interesting way, usually at the campfire the night before. The following morning there would be a period of instruction which later on would be reinforced by a game or competition.August 8 was the last day of the camp. B-P had invited the Van Raaltes and their house guests along with the Literary Manager from Pearson's - B-P's publisher - Percy W. Everett for the special programme. It included games, competitions, demonstrations of First Aid, Firemanship etc.

The campers then returned to camp for the last campfire. The chorus Eeengonyama startled the dusk -B-P:"Eeengonyama - gonyama."The Boys: "Invooboo. Yabo! Invooboo."he next days the boys returned to the Hyacinth for their homes. B.P. praised that the ̀ Discipline was excellent.`Percy Everett of Pearson's wrote twenty years later,"I can still see him, as he stands in the flickering light of the fire - an alert figure, full of the joy of life, now grave, now gay, answering all

manner of questions, imitating the call of birds, showing how to stalk an animal, fleshing out a little story, dancing and singing round the fire ... “

The Bharat Scouts and GuidesCreating a Better World September, 2020

Page 12: Vol. 66/September, 2020

12

In this way, the historic first experimental camp at Brownsea Island was highly successful. With this, B.P. had displayed two lives- one as a military hero and the other as the Founder of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides movement, giving shape to the Biography of B.P. titled as `The Two Lives of a Hero` written by William Hillcourt. His vision for the youth of the world and his great desire for peace and world unity are the need of the hour at all times.……........Why Open Sessions on Courses? In all training Courses conducted by the Bharat Scouts and Guides, time is allotted for Open Sessions on the last day of the course. All the trainers and the trainees of the course participate in it. Open session will be conducted by the Leader of the concerned course. All the staff members who assisted in the course will be obviously present. The purpose of conducting Open Sessions is to give opportunities to the trainees to get their doubts cleared in the topics that were dealt in the course.

During the session, some statements or words or ideas might not have been explained completely to the satisfaction of the trainees due to reasons like language problem, shortage of time, unpreparedness of the trainers or instructors, or sometimes the doubts may be beyond the scope of that particular course. Sometimes the trainees may get doubts after the session or they may feel the need for clarification when they discuss with co-trainees.

Before Open Session is initiated, the Leader of the Course will formally address the trainees stating that they are free to ask any doubts related to the topics which were covered during the course. When such doubts are raised by the trainees or participants during the open session, LOC usually requests the concerned staff member who dealt that topic, to clarify or answer. If further clarification is needed, LOC may express his view in an attempt to clarify, without contradicting the views of the concerned staff member. If further clarification is needed, LOC may invite other staff members to express their views. But LOC should not ask a particular staff member to clarify their doubts without knowing his or her readiness.

In case neither the LOC nor the staff members have any proper solution, LOC may assure the trainees that authentic information will be communicated to them after the course, if the question is within the scope of the said course. Otherwise, LOC may tell clearly that the question is beyond the scope of the course and it will be cleared when the trainees attend the next higher course.

In this context Sri Krishnaswamy, R. adds: Before handling the `Open Session`, the leader should prepare the following:

(1) the syllabus of the course, the hand-outs and other reference material used by the staff for the particular course.

(2) Keep other books related to administration limited to the scope of the course such as Basic, Advanced or HWB.(3) Any other information like the website address of the Bharat Scouts and Guides or that particular state or

contact address of the state with whom they can clarify on administrative matters.

Now-a-days, it is good that our trainees are reading scout literature due to the introduction of SLMs and the pre-course assignments thereafter, and attending the courses with in-depth knowledge. Hence the trainers, who are on the staff, are also required to update the information by reading literature including World Scout Handbook. In some courses, LOC invites participants of the course to ask any questions related to scouting. The participants respond by asking questions related to administrative or organizational matters of their districts or states. Such questions pose challenges to the LOC. So Leaders of the Courses should make the open sessions as platforms for clearing their technical doubts related to the topics which were dealt in the course but notas forums for redressing their personal grievances.
