Site description A convenient, quiet overnight bush camp for freeway travelers in dry Box forest. No formal camping sites - follow one of the many roads and check out tracks into the light scrub. A Permit is required for group camping or camping more than 1 night. Camping at the picnic ground (2.7k up Reef Hills Road) is discouraged. But: (a) Fires in fireplaces only (b) No driving off roads or tracks. The low rolling ridges are covered with an open forest of Red Stringybark, Long -leaved and Red Box with an understory of scattered wattles. Grey Box is common on the lower slopes, a remnant of the vegetation which covered much of the Victorian northern plains. Most wattles flower in winter. Spring provides a wide range of wildflowers. The red gravely soil can be dusty and the thin shade offers little relief from summer heat. Cockatoos, Rosellas, Honeyeaters, Kangaroos, Echidnas and Sugar Gliders are common.

4. Mokoan :- North bound Rest Area Type Road Rest Area, Hwy Park On the Hume Fwy [M31] 209k north of Melbourne, 5.5k north of the Benalla/Winton flyover (northbound) VicRoads 48 C2 Hema 42 D6 Access Sealed Road Size 10+ Height 190 Privacy Secluded from freeway by a hill, although traffic noise is constant. Privacy Very good: secluded and remote, but expect occasional tourists Site description A large open, grassed area (previously farm paddocks) on the upper slopes of Mt Warby(480m). The designated camping area is open with virtually no shade and slopes with only a couple of level sites. A quiet but rather disappointing camp. The day area is shaded (stunted Stringybark and Box) with 3 tables and BBQs. Tank water signed 'not suitable for drinking'.

Page 6: Vol 6 High Country

The Warby Ranges are low (2-500m), rocky and rugged (forcing the Hume Fwy to divert south). They offer good views (utilized by the Kelly Gang). In summer they can be dry and hot. After rain creeks fall off the long eastern escarpment as waterfalls. There are numerous tracks, lookouts, picnic areas and waterfalls. Best in spring when wildflowers and birds are prolific. Vegetation is open or clumped Red Gums, Red Stringybark and Box. Grass trees are unusually large (old). In spring a wide range of wildflowers becomes apparent.
