After graduation from Latin, Bill went to work for the Navy Department in Cleveland as a file clerk. By 1942, after training in Washington, D.C., Bill became a naval ordinance inspector in Pontiac, Michigan. After being rejected by the U.S. Naval Air Corp because he needed glasses, Slick enlisted in the Army Air Corps Pre-Meteorology program in December, 1942. Bill’s classes in the Air Corps program were on the campus of Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island. During this time, he met Pattie, his future bride. Slick also ended up spending two winters in Greenland. Honorably discharged in 1946, Bill returned to Providence, married Pattie and enrolled at Brown on the GI Bill. Like many other WWII vets he lost little time in catching up – the Slicks’ first child was born while Bill was studying for his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at Brown and also working 40 hours a week at the same time. In 1948, Slick took a job as a Petroleum Engineer with the Humble Oil Refining Company in Tomball, Texas. (At that time, Standard Oil of New Jersey, now Exxon-Mobil, owned over 70% of the Humble Oil stock.) Bill says he learned the oil industry “from the ground up,” working as roustabout and a roughneck before becoming a junior engineer. He quipped that “when I first joined Humble I didn’t know an oil well from a hole in the ground” but hastened to add that “it was a wonderful way to start and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Not only did I learn about the basics of the business, but also so much about the importance of the people who make it work.” While early assignments were as a field petroleum reservoir engineer, Bill’s career saw him in new positions about every two or three years, including jobs in the company’s Houston headquarters. In 1961, Slick was promoted to Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Board of Humble Oil. After two years in that assignment, Slick progressed through a series of positions of increasing importance in Natural Gas, Supply and Corporate Planning, including a stint in New York with Standard Oil of New Jersey. By 1970, Slick was the Manager of the Public Affairs Department of Exxon USA, which included responsibility for both Public Relations and Government Relations. In 1972, Bill was made a Senior VP and member of the Management Committee of Exxon USA. Through almost half of his career Slick was deeply involved in Public Policy issues. He participated in several studies requested by the federal government, was a witness before congress on numerous occasions and was a spokesman for both Exxon and the petroleum industry. and enrolled at Brown on the GI Bill.

(At that time, Standard Oil of New Jersey, now Exxon-Mobil, owned over 70% of the Humble Oil stock.)

Bill says he learned the oil industry “from the ground up,” working as roustabout and a roughneck before becoming a junior engineer. He quipped that “when I first joined Humble I didn’t know an oil well from a hole in the ground” but hastened to add that “it was a wonderful way to start and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Carrying on the Lessons after Thirty Years

president’s letter

Greetings to all alumni and friends of Cathedral Latin School! I would like to congratulate William Slick, Jr. ’41 on being selected as this year’s Merit Award recipient. Bill had a long career with major oil companies but never forgot to give back as he was deeply involved with several College Boards of Trustees to support student opportunities. I encourage you to make plans to attend our annual Communion Breakfast on April 19 at the Notre Dame Education Center where we will honor Bill for his accomplishments since graduating from Cathedral Latin.

With great appreciation, I thank all of you who contributed to our annual dues for 2008, which amounted to over $46,000 from 1,222 contributors. The honor roll from all 2008 dues contributors is included in this issue. We cannot keep the organization alive without your allegiance and support. The legacy of our alma mater continues at NDCL where the majority of our contributions are directed. We welcome any alumni who may be interested in joining the association as a trustee.

This June 2009, will mark thirty years since our beloved Cathedral Latin School closed its doors on E. 107th and Carnegie. The school lives on in the hearts and minds of those who have passed through the halls over its 63 years of existence. The legacy has continued at NDCL since the Association entered into an agreement with the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1988. NDCL’s Mission and Value statements

were changed within the last 5 years to incorporate the ideas and goals of the Marianists order that were the framework for education at CLS. The alumni and their families are welcomed partners and supporters of the school and are deemed key stakeholders of the school community. We continue to interact with the school and assist them in building new foundations for future educational opportunities for the entire school community.

I encourage all and have faith that our alumni will continue to support Catholic education in any way they can. Our association supports Catholic education at NDCL both monetarily and organizationally by interacting with multiple groups at the school. We have worked with the school’s alumni and development offices, participated at open house and Career Week, athletic teams, and several other groups. We are a major donor

to the NDCL Annual Fund and key contributor to multiple initiatives the school sponsors throughout the year. It is a bigger sacrifice than ever to send a child to a Catholic school. Please do whatever you can to support not only the legacy of Cathedral Latin School but also the legacy of a Catholic education for a deserving young child.

Please check your calendar for the two other annual events we sponsor: 50th Athletic Hall of Fame Induction held at NDCL (August 29) and Latin Alumni Golf Outing (June 26). Those who attend always have a great time. We hope to see you at one of our events this year.

Thanks for continuing to be caring Christian people of our community and showing your Latin Pride in Deed and Truth!

— Chris Lynch ’75

debated Ralph Nader on the McNeil-Lehrer PBS program. Bill retired from Exxon at age 60 in 1983.

In 1997, Slick was awarded the Papal Gold Medal Auguste Crucis Insigne Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice by Pope John Paul II. This gold cross medal is given by the Catholic Church for distinguished service to the church by lay people and clergy. It is the highest award given to laity by the Papacy.

In addition to his impressive professional career, Slick has also served with a number of nonprofit organizations. He was a member of the Boards of Trustees at Brown University (his other alma mater) and of the University of St. Thomas (in Houston). Bill has also served on Advisory Boards of the University of Texas College of Engineering, the University of Houston Center for Public Policy and the Houston Public Television Station.

Bill was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree by the University of St. Thomas and has received “man of the year” type honors from the University of Houston Alumni Association, the Center for Irish Studies at University of St. Thomas and Associated Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Houston.

He has been involved with the Salvation Army for over 30 years and is a Life Member and past Chairman of its Greater Houston Advisory Board, a past member of its National Advisory Board and Founding Chair and current member of its Adult Rehabilitation Center Advisory Board. Bill has been active in his local parish where he led its participation in the Diocesan-wide campaign for Houston’s new Cathedral.

Bill comes from a truly “Latin” and NDCL family. He is the older brother of Bob Slick ’44, (deceased). Bill also has one sister, Clare Ann Slick Way ’48,

who is a Notre Dame Academy graduate and three other deceased siblings. “With Clare, Bob and me, we have lots of NDCL roots” Bill chuckles. Bill’s mother and father served as presidents of the Cathedral Latin Mother’s and Father’s Clubs, respectively. He has followed their examples of leadership and service to others.

Slick vividly recalls his father taking him to thrilling football games at the old “Latin Field” stadium, near the Baldwin Reservoir in the 1930s. His father was a University of Dayton graduate, was a friend of legendary Latin Coach Herb Eisele ’22 and had a deep appreciation for the Marianists at Cathedral Latin. The choice for high school was “always Latin” for young Bill, following his graduation from St. Philomena School in East Cleveland. At Latin, Bill quickly got involved in drum corps, marching band, minstrel shows and Sodality – while excelling academically, as well.

Bill always enjoyed school – especially his years at Cathedral Latin. He appreciates the solid academic foundation that he received from the Marianists. “We learned about values at Latin – order, commitment and discipline. Sure, the camaraderie and friendships were great, but we also learned that there are things to be gained by doing right. And you learn many good things from discipline.”

Slick’s family upbringing and his Catholic education are things he has always valued. “My whole being was influenced at my mother’s knee by her simple truths, mottos we all learned, and at Catholic institutions,” Slick reflects. “I always tried to do my best at whatever job I was given to do,” he says with a measure of satisfaction. “If you do that and are always honest, everything else will take care of itself,” he adds.

He and Pattie had a second child and 39 years of a wonderful life before her

untimely death in 1985. Even during both his busy career and retirement years, Bill has found time to give back to others. He joined the Board of Trustees at Brown University and later joined the Board of Directors of the University of St. Thomas – then a struggling Catholic college in Houston. He chaired a capital campaign for UST that raised over $35 million and helped lay the foundation for a generation of growth there.

Bill has never forgotten his “Latin” Lions, either. He is a regular dues-paying member of the Latin Alumni Association, and established the Robert E. Van Bergen ’41 Endowed Music Scholarship at NDCL, in memory of his classmate and good friend Bob Van Bergen. Many Latin alumni will remember Bob as a state champion trumpet player and the leader of the music department at Latin from 1962-71.

Even at 85 years young, Bill Slick shows no signs of slowing down. He continues to be active in his volunteer service, has a busy social calendar, enjoys fly fishing and horticulture, and even tolerates a round of golf occasionally. Bill and his wife, Sally, have been married over 23 years and live in Houston, TX. He has two children, Steven and Susan, three grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
