Dear Fellow Congregants,A beau ful problem has arisen over the last few weeks at Temple Chai. As you know, our annual Gala, where we will celebrate 15 years with our beloved senior rabbi, Mari Chernow, is scheduled for January 27th. Led by Gala co-chairs Debbie and Gary Blyn, our commi ee began working with sponsors and table captains this summer. Our community has responded with overwhelming support, and we have come to realize that, we will not be able to accommodate the expected a endance in our social hall.

We most certainly do not want to turn anyone away from this wonderful and important event. Therefore, we have moved our Gala off site to the Embassy Suites Sco sdale Resort on Sco sdale and Chapparal. Please know that, because of our arrangements with the resort, our costs to put on this event DO NOT increase over what we would have spent at the temple. This is our most important fundraising event of the year, and it will be an incredible opportunity to celebrate our rabbi, have lots of fun, and raise money to support the great work of our synagogue.

Our Gala is an integral part of our annual calendar. It is not merely a way to support the opera ons of the Temple fi nancially – it is a fabulous evening, with a fes ve atmosphere and an awesome band. Jerry and I, like many of you, love dancing into the night to the New Groove with our Temple Chai community. I hope you will join us this year for this wonderful night of celebra on!

TEMPLE CHAI LEGACY SOCIETYAs part of our legacy giving eff orts, we have formed the Temple Chai Legacy Society. We are grateful to those who have chosen to include Temple Chai in their planned giving, and look forward to thanking and honoring this important group

When a family is in mourning, the presence of the community is a source of comfort and strength.

If you would be interested in joining this very important part of our community to provide support, or are in need of support for a Shiva Minyan, please contact:Natalie Levy at myna [email protected] or Alan Zeichick at [email protected] or Temple Chai Offi ce at 602-971-

1234We’ll help everyone feel comfortable par cipa ng in

this important mitzvah.

Ask me. I’ll tell you…By Sandy Rife, Mt. Sinai Cemetery

Why are flowers not used at Jewish funerals?

The Talmud tells us that in ancient days, flowers and spices were used at the funeral to offset the odor of the decaying body. Today this is no longer essential. Others have associated the perfume of flowers and spices with joy and gaiety, which is not appropriate

at a time of mourning. Flowers at funerals are considered a non-Jewish ritual and are strongly

discouraged. To honor the deceased, a charitable contribution to a synagogue, hospital or charity of

the family’s choice is a lasting and meaningful tribute.
