2007 Sierra Moon Shine Poker Run and End of Summer Party! By Paul Hall

Sierra Rider’s Rollin’ Reporter

For those members who couldn’t make it to either the poker run or the after-run party, you missed a good one! The Fourth Annual Moonshine Poker Run was a kick ass time. There were 58 people on the run – at least for a while. Unfortunately, Mark Aston broke down before the first stop at the Pines Bar at Bass Lake and wasn’t able to finish the run or even make it back to the party later in the day. Meanwhile, others had caught up to the ride by the Pines as they arrived too late to register at the fair-grounds. After the first stop at the Pines we went to the Buckhorn in North Fork where the proprietor had a nice spread of munchies awaiting us. Next, it was off to Sheri’s Road House which made for a nice stop, we lost a few of our valley riders at this point. Then, we rolled on to Coarse-gold for another card draw at the Historic Village. Here too, a few broke off from the group to go home to trade in the bike for their car before going to the fairgrounds party. We drew five non-member riders from Oakhurst, two from Sanger, three from Fresno, two from Santa Clara, one from Chico. That’s 13 from outside of Mariposa and an-other 14 riders from Mariposa; while SSC members made up 31 of the riders. Once back at the fairgrounds we had a great time listen-ing to Noizy Neighbors and woofing down delicious bur-gers and baked beans skillfully cooked buy John Beving-ton and Eddie Lopes. Bootjack market provided the deli-cious potato salad. As the night went on, more SSC members and town’s people showed up to eat and dance including a few foreign tourist who heard about the party at their motel. Gradually, each year, we attract more and more non-member town’s people as they figure out we are mostly business people and neighbors rather than bad-boy bik-ers who like to tear up the town. Behind the scenes, while we were on the run, Shane and Jeremy Dobson and a couple of their friends, picked up the HUGE cake we had previously ordered from Pioneer Market Bakery – it was so big they had to use Jeremy’s pickup truck to haul it! The cake of course, was for later when it would be carried in by four guys and the crowd would sing a round of Happy Birthday to our beloved Prez for his 60th Birthday

which happened to be on that day! The giant slab of cake was lined with 60 candles which Michael was obligated to blow out by literally having to walk around the perimeter. It was decorated with a windy road with toy motorcycles, and various sayings on the top. Around 7 p.m., after the awesome music of Noizy Neighbors we brought on Threshold, a stupendous band from Modesto. Everyone loved them. The dancing went on well into the night. Many people had opted to camp on the lawn and the Dixon’s and Hughes’ rolled in their toy haulers. (Naturally we encourage not driving after a night of libations.) The Chamber of Commerce provided the bar and the Chamber Board of Directors unanimously voted to give the SSC half of the net proceeds (of course Peter and me abstained from that vote) The Bar generated $282.25 for the SSC. The auction raised $805.00 from the sale of a self pow-ered lawn mower donated by True Value Hardware (be sure to support them and tell Troy thanks for his generos-ity); a pair of Raiders vs Lyons Tickets donated by Mari-posa Properties. A beautiful original painting painted and donated by our own Lorie Setterberg entitled “Unscheduled Stop” depicted a motorcycle repair in front of “rusty’s MC Repair shop some where in Utah, a totally imaginary scene but perhaps inspired by Ron’s break down in Moab this past summer. And rounding out the auction slate, a medium-sized wind chime from grace note Chimes. The 50/50 was won by the Setterberg’s which brought them and the SSC a cool $186.00 bucks. The poker run paid out $125.00 to Bernie Mounce for high hand and $75.00 for low hand to Anthony Wisely (Cary’s 11-year-old son) who shortly thereafter invested his winnings in an SSC membership, making him the youngest full fledged member. The raffles included dozens of items including 10 cans of “Moto Glo” the newest miracle cleaner on the market pro-duced by our very own (we’re so proud) Rex Fouch. This is really good stuff, cleans chrome spotless, removes the most hardened-on bugs and road grime. It even cleans mirrors without streaking. Great stuff! In all, some 40 different prize contributors from around town generated another $260.00 for the kitty. A percentage of the proceeds are being donated to the SSC’s Academic Achievement Award Fund for Spring Hill High School graduates. The rest went into the SSC till for administrative expenses but, you will probably see in a future Gazette, the SSC has made a modest $500.00 contribution to the J.C. Fremont Hospital Foundation. -- yet another worthwhile effort.

After the last band packed up and the crowd thinned to the overnighters, the party went on into the early morning hours as Peter would hear his stomach growling around 1:00 a.m. and decided to fire up the grill to polish off the last 15 burgers. Naturally he didn’t eat all of those himself – several other after-midnight revelers helped out. Finally, the party ended and it marked the conclusion of yet another successful Moon Shine event. Special thanks are in order for any number of people who made it all come together but to list a few: Thanks to Paula who sacrificed the run to stay behind and organize the raffle items and see to the smooth set up. To Charlie & Georgia James for their poker run registra-tion help. Thanks to Eddie Lopes for getting the BBQ going and helping Johnny with the cooking. Thanks to Dorothy for any number of minor to major ef-forts and her goofy little brother Richard, who is building quite a reputation for helping out and being goofy. Thanks to Lisa from the Miners Inn bar who volunteered time serving drinks as well as friends of the SSC, Sherrie, Mark and Christine (who are fast becoming the SSC’s unofficial official bar-keeps). Thanks to Peter for helping us auction our donated items and bidding on Lorie’s great painting (you can view it in the Hotel Jeffery). Again, thanks the Dobson brothers for their help with the cake project and other important errands and helpful stuff. And let’s not forget the Prez and his better half for their countless hours of organizing and inspirational motivation. The SSC simply wouldn’t be the SSC without their love of the club. Special thanks to the Debbie Progner and the Mariposa Bears for loaning us their BBQ! After every great bash there’s the clean up, and this year we saw higher than usual volunteer crew for that job. Thanks to all who kicked in on that nasty job, you have extra points coming for that! And last, but certainly not least, thanks to all of the SSC members who came and made this a great time and more importantly, helped make the SSC’s mission of Riding For Others a few bucks stronger. For those of you who didn’t make it (and for whom I am presently obligated to type this report), thanks for being with us in spirit. We all know it’s impossible to make eve-rything but remember, if you would like to help us achieve a higher level of success don’t miss the opportunity to participate in the recently established “non-participation contribution” of half of the $25.00 run fee ($12.50). For your convenience you can deliver your donation to the Mobility Center at the Pioneer Village (next to Mari-posa Shipping Co.) I know 12 bucks doesn’t seem like much but multiplied by the 30 something non-participating members we’re looking at another $400.00 bucks that

would definitely help the kids who are making their way out of a tough place in life and struggling to move forward in hopes of becoming a successful, hard working, gener-ous person like you. See ya all during the Cops For Kids extravaganza! And maybe on the next Breakfast run!

Up-Coming Events ⇒ November 20 Kops for Kids—It is nearly time once again for our annual co-operative effort with the Sheriff’s

Dept to collect $$ for the Kops For Kids toy drive. Due to her very busy schedule, Lorie will not be able to help us distribute the jars this year. I will therefore oversee the project but will need 3 volunteers who can distribute the jars to select areas and periodically collect the loot. Then, pick the jars up assigned to you. Who wants to help out with this project? The Jars need to go out by November 20. I will be out of town until the 18th so when I return I will call the 3 volunteers who stepped up to the plate and arrange the campaign.

⇒ December 8 (Saturday) – The Merry Mountain Christmas Parade. Staging at 10AM on Coakley Circle (Just like the recent Labor Day Parade) This event is hosted by the Mariposa Chamber of Commerce and organized in part (this year) by yours truly. Again, another opportunity to strut our stuff. I am told (not having ever been to the pa-rade myself) that it is typically as large as the Labor Day parade but many degrees cooler. If you can get you bike out that day PLEASE attend. The turn out for the Labor Day parade a couple weeks ago was alarmingly low but despite that little problem, the SSC won 2nd place in the “Special Groups” category – which by the way, was the category that over half the parade entries were in! There will be trophies for the Christmas Parade as well. You might consider a warm Santa Hat for extra warmth. Over the last 10 years the parade weather was in the 60’s and sunny. (10 points for riding in the parade)

⇒ December 31—New Years Eve Party. As December wraps up you know what that means! It’s Party time! We will hold the New Year’s Party at the Best Western again this year. Noizy Neighbors will entertain us again also. Now then, as you well know, after this party there is no driving – or shouldn’t be unless you’ve really been good. We highly recommend a room. You may book now at the Best Western (209) 966-7545 at the low rate of 53.90 (includes tax). You should also let us (the SSC brass) know if you plan to come, as there is limited space. Before we start letting the friends of SSC and others come in we want to make sure all of the members are signed up. No word on the price for members and guests but will get back to you on that. It will be a pay at the door thing anyway.

If you pick up a flyer or hear about an up-coming event, please email or call me so we can add it to

our listing. [email protected] (559) 658-7166

Hello SSCrs:

It has been an awesome summer with good times, great rides, and a whole lot of fun. As we enter the winter season, we will be participating in quite a few important events to further SSC’s efforts to make our mountain communities better. So stay tuned to the ride and event alerts and please, “get involved.” I am looking for suggestions for breakfast rides, as we are trying to get back into the groove with two rides each month. It is not necessary for us to eat first; we could take a ride to the location and eat lunch! So send me your location ideas and any contact information you may have! Finally, if you have a business card ad in the Newsletter it is time to renew. I will be giving you a call to confirm your ad. If you would like to place a new business card ad, please send me an email and we get you signed up! It is a great $40.00 investment! I am also working on an ad page for our Web Site (Paul I need to talk with you!). This will give you great opportunity to advertise your busi-ness and support the club! I welcome your letters and comments so take a moment to write me a “letter to the editor”! Ride safe and take care!
