Hi everyone,Well, if you were not there for the Second

HCR Meet at the Cotton Ginning Days Fair in Dallas, NC,you missed out on a couple of days of interesting sightsand a whole lot of fun. The attending HCR Builders

Group Members were treated to a couple of days ofbeautiful weather, beautiful carriages, lots of good f ood, music, actual cotton ginn ing, making new friends, butmost of all, meeting other HCR Builders Group Members& seeing up c lose the beautiful carriages on hand thatmost attending Members brought along to the HCR Meet.

Seeing twice the amount of Members & their carriages this year, upconsiderably from last years five Members & their carriages, made me proud tobe part of such a wonderful get together.

The attending HCR Builders Group Members were quick to find outhow great it was to be able to drive their carriages at wil l, any where on theFair Grounds on smooth black topped streets. The looks and stares we all gotdriving our carriages was something that we will treasure forever.

The Tractor Show part of the event features many of the smallertractor varietyLawn Tractors that is. Perhaps the reason for our carriagesbeing so well accepted as the norm in this type of event is the fact that we alluse small engines for powering our carriages. Whatever the reasoning is forbeing accepted so well in the surroundings, we relished in the attention andfriendliness of the vendors and spectators.

We were invited to join in the Tractor Parade around the fairgrounds and it was refreshing to see all the smiles, Ouhs and Ahasss and allthe great comments coming from the spectators as we drove past.

Af ter all the attending Members arr ived, we had a Meet & Greet session between the HCR Bui lders Group Members, at which t ime, I presentedeach attending Member with a Certificate of Appreciation for attending and asmall memento o f the Meet to take with them.

On a very posit ive note, the HCR Group has been formerly granted

permission to have an annual HCR Meet at the CGDs Fair. We need to startour planning now to attend the 2012 HCR Meet. Along with all of this yearsattending Members, I would also li ke to see our attendance numbers to doub leagain at the 2012 HCR Meet. So, start now making plans to join us in Dallas,NC in October 2012.

I would li ke to again personally thank all the attending Members &their wives fo r making the 2011 HCR Builders Meet an event to remember. Isay, lets do i t again next year.;)

There was one more obstacle to overcome. There was a 33diameter drive pulley on each rear wheel. No one has made them for a century orso. Id need them to do the build. I was able to make them and shortly after theywere finished, I called Witmers and ordered the wheels. They said it would takeabout a month to make them.

The week after New Years the wheels arrived. At the same time Iordered the wheels I also ordered the axles and springs. Witmers is a great placeto shop for all the parts needed for a buggy of the early 1900s and their pricesare reasonable.

This is how I came to build the Holsman. It is a time machine inmore ways than one for me.

The picture on the right was taken

at the start of a parade at Kent, Washington afew years ago.

My wife also enjoys our Horseless carriages.

I like to build a dolly .. makes it alot easier tomove things around. The frame is3/16" x 2" angle iron. Also in this picture are theaxles and spr ings I got from Witmer. The wheelsare leaning up against the wall.Front wheels are 44" and back wheels 48"diameter.

Gorilla Glue. It works well and sands easily.

    Barn Finds Still PossibleBy

    Lee Thevenet

Just when you think you have seen it all and life offers no moresurprises, you turn a corner, go down a flight of stairs, look in an abandonedbuilding or just chat with someone, and there it is, just what you had beendreaming of.

That is just aboutwhat happened to JoeEdgington of Peebles, Ohio.Joe is a Jet Engine Technicianworking for GE. In Joes ownwords , I found this little gem

in the back o f a massivebuilding . Apparently, theowner had it amongst a largecollection of collector cars.

It took me abouta year to get the deal done , says Joe. It turns out that Joe had stumbled upona 1959 Rollsmobile , a CDO facsimile, manufactured in Fort Lauderdale,Florida by Capt. Al Starts.

Some of ourelderly readers mightremember the joint venture ofCapt. Al Starts, AuthorGodfrey, Leo Dorsey and theRollsmobile Corp. Thecompany of fered either a CDOor an early 1901 Ford Replica. Both versions utilized thesame running gear or undercarriage of the CDO version. More about the Rollsmobile endeavor in

another artic le in this HCR Newsletter issue.Joe goes on t o say, it already had a title, so I transferred it and

purchased historical tags for it . In November of 2011, Joe hopes to have a fivemonth restoration done to the carriage. Proudly, he stated then it will beready for the car shows

    The Gruss MobileBy

    Frank Gruss

This is my fi rst attempt at building an HCR. I have built severalsmall parade cars such as the Shriners use in parades and have enjoyed thathobby most of my life. I have printed off all of Everett Moores Newsletters andI do use them for referenceand ideas when I amgathering information for myprojects.

I have neverbuilt f rom plans, other then afew sketches of my own, therefore, I have never builtan exact repl ica. When I firstsaw Stu Martyns StanleySteamer, I really liked i t, so

that was the picture I had infront of me when I designed,

what I call my 1903 Runabout .I scaled it down

a bit, perhaps 3/4 size. Iwanted to use 20 inch wheelsand found some on E-Baythat were advertised as being, cart wheels. They had 5/8axle bearings & spokes, just per fec t, they fi t the bi llfor me.

I used a RiderMower transaxle that I had inmy pile of parts. It has threeforward speeds and reverse. Ilike to shift gears, so nohydrostat for me. Thetransaxle was designed foruse with a vertical shaftengine and vertical shaftengines do not set good withme, so I installed a right anglegear box that has a 2 to 1 gear ratio, so that made the hook up to the 6 hp

horizontal shaft engine very easy. The body was built using Marine plywood. The transaxle had a

disc brake, but was only 3 in diameter. I made a 6 disc to replace it and itworks great. Clutch is a simple belt tightening design. The clutch, as well asthe brake is controlled by a conventional pedal on the floor.

Everett Moore had done an article on my shop in an issue of hisNewsletter, and it has not changed in 30 or more years. It is st ill one half of a24 X 24 garage and I stil l use the same meager too ls.

Everett had said that he hoped the other half did not have a car init, because, they were meant to be outs ide, however, here in Michigan we getsnow and ice, and its no fun clearing that off the car, so yes, thats where myChevy lives.

Of all my builds, I think this one has been the most fun to buildand drive. We have driven in one parade so far and many times up and downthe road near our home. It dri ves out really well at about 15 mph at half thrott le.I just do not have the guts to open her up to full throttle I hope you allenjoyed the articleFrank
