This years Show & Shine set a new record of 350cars registered and several more that came in after weran out of dash plaques. Based on the past couple ofyears, this may be the average number of cars to expectin the future. Then again, that think was said when webroke 200 cars.
One of the highlights of the year was the attendanceof Galen Govier. Galen is a nationally recognized Moparexpert who was in Alaska authenticating a few Mopars. You can learn more about Galen from his web site at:www.gvgovier.com.
There were two awards this year, the “Jay OfsthunMemorial Choice” and “Mr. Ed’s Pick”. Jay Ofsthun wasa co-founder of the Show & Shine and a member ofboth MSSRAandAntiqueAuto Mushers ofAlaska. Theaward is a joint effort of both clubs memorializes him.MSSRA normally arranges for senior citizen to select acar that is at least 25 years old and AAMA presentingthe winner a plaque. AAMA also has a traveling trophythat documents the past winners. This being the 20thAnniversary of Jay Ofsthun’s passing, we wanted some-one special to make the pick for this year and selectedPhil Anderson, Jay’ best friend and brother in-law. Phillooked for a car he could see Jay driving. Jay was a Cali-fornian and liked music, Phil could see him cruising inTim Smith’s ’67 VW Bus with the great stereo system.Thank Phil for making this difficult choice and CON-GRATULATIONS to Tim!
The “Mr. Ed’s Pick” is a new for this year. Ed Park isnot only the other co-founder of the event, but many

Ben Holeman’s been a littleunder the weather lately. He wason a fishing charter and fell in theboat breaking two ribs anddislocated two more. Must beREAL painful.

Hello to all. The summer is fast leaving us withFall just on the horizon as evidenced by the recent(and continuing) rains and of course the approachingAlaska State Fair. Reminds me of the summers Iencountered when I first got up to Alaska in 1985.
Well, all of our big MSSRA events are behind usleaving us with our Thursday Night Cruises and a fewValley Cruzers events for the most part. Once againJerry Miller allowed us to visit his home and enjoysome of his collection and his hospitality on one of ourcruises. Another chance to share some food, fun, andentertainment with good friends. Thanks Jerry andSara.
While on the subject of cruises, we all owe a bigthanks to KB, our 2006 cruise director, for an awe-some job. Some of us enjoyed the freebies that most ofthe establishments threw our way for patronizing theirbusinesses on our cruises. I sincerely hope our clubmembers had the chance to get out and enjoy at leastsome of our events. I also hope you had the opportu-nity to join us at the Hot Summer Nights in Palmer. The weather was agreeable and everyone seemed toenjoy the evening. One of our own, Kim Nissen wontwo awards including the coveted People’s ChoiceAward.
There are still a few events remaining for the yearso check out the Newsletter and Sun Spams. Since thelast newsletter we celebrated the biggest event our clubproduces, the 28th Annual Jay Ofsthun Show and Shinesponsored by NAPAAuto Parts. What an awesomeday; sunshine, shiny cars and trucks, and lots of peopleto enjoy it. A great big thanks go to all the helpersfrom the various car clubs that stepped up and madethis event a little easier and a lot more fun. This wasthe first year where we had several vendors on thefield and this partnership worked well for our club, thevendors, and for the visitors. We had another greatturnout like last year, breaking 350 vehicles. Bad

choice of words. No, we didn’t break 350 vehicles, weenjoyed over 350 vehicles. Back on track, we alsoenjoyed the music of Johnny Fitts and the Long GoneDaddies again. If you like Rockabilly you gotta lovethese guys. A great big thanks goes to Ray Elleven forchairing this years Show and Shine. Great job Ray.For those that are interested, we still have T-shirtsavailable from the Pre-Show and Shine and the Showand Shine for only $5.00 each.
Also, I want to offer a special thanks to those hardysouls that came out for the MDA Summer Camp onAugust 9th at Birchwood Airport. I was unable to showup but we did have a few folks support this worthyevent offering the kids the rides they so much enjoy.
Well, September will be here soon and time for thefirst membership meeting after the summer fun. We’reback at the UAA Housing Commons on campus,September 26th, 7 PM. Hope to see you there.

The Pre-Show & Shine started out with 15 or 20people getting together the night before the Show & Shinehas grown to a major event with its own identity. Thisyear’s McDonalds’ Pre Show & Shine Car Show was awell organized event with 122 registered cars compet-ing for 11 awards.
The Door Prizes were a great touch to an already spec-tacular show.Abig thanks to all who donated door prizes.
Thanks to the volunteer t-shirt sales staff who: DaniciaClausen, Brittany Scott, Katie Bee, Treat Main, and KimHammill
And finally, special that’s to McDonalds on Diamondand Jewel Lake for hosting this event and to DuaneClausen and Bruce Main for chairing another great Pre-Show & Shine.

When voting for Most Potential, the spectators must ofhave thinking Bob Pillion’s 1966 Buick Rivera with ablown engine, radical chopped top, shaved door handles, and those wheels that spin when the car stops. would have liked. Since Ed likes customs, street rods, and Corvettes, they selected Dave Hutchins 1932 NashCoupe with all Corvette C-4 running gear and suspen-sion. CONGRATULATIONS DAVE!
This year’s show went smoother any of the past shows.Spectators and car owners had nothing but good to say. There always seems to be a few complaints but this yearthe only complaints were about the music volume whichwere out weighted by music complements. Eventuallywe’ll find a happy medium.
A BIGALASKATHANKS the many MSSRAmem-bers and the other clubs who stepped up to help makethis our most successful Show & Shine ever! Specialthanks Terry Erikainen, Jane Keller, and Lynda Edwardsfor taking care of the t-shirt sales and everyone whomanned the entry ramps on both the main field and theoverflow filed, especially Charlie Laurence and the Brit-ish Sports Cars of Alaska members. Thank you all verymuch!
And let’s not forget the sponsors who made this pos-sible: McDonalds of Jewel Lake & Lake Otis who gotus in the mood with the Pre-Show & Shine; WarningLits of Alaska who loaned us the traffic cones to lay outthe field; Fred’s Towing & Recovery for the outstandingstage;Alaska Sound Labs for the outstanding sound sys-tem, and of course our major sponsor, NAPA Truck &Auto Parts.
As you can tell from the pictures, there was some-thing for everyone at this year’s Show & Shine.
Above: Fred Stauber of Fred’s Towing had the perferctstage for Johnny Fitts and the Long Gone Daddies, areally nice tricked out roll back car hauler.Right: Galen Govier and his daughter pose with JimWojciehowski’s 1969 ½ Road Runner. Galen was inAlaska authenticating local Mopars.
Dave Hutching of Soldotna receives his “Mr Ed Pick”award from Bob Pillion. This award is picked by theMSSRA President and NSRA State Representative whopicks a car event co-founder Ed Park would have liked.
