Cutler-HammerJanuary 2001

Vol. 2, Ref. No. [05421

Single-Phase, Type EP, 60 Hz•1

Type EP 3-25 kVA

Product DescriptionType EP• Sand and Resin Encapsulated design• Suitable for indoor or outdoor

applications• Totally enclosed, non-ventilated

enclosures• Enclosures are NEMA 3R rated• Mountable in any position indoors

and upright only outdoors• 185°C Insulation System, 115°C rise

standard• Available in ratings through 37.5 kVA

and 4160 volts primary

Application DescriptionThe basic purpose of a transformeris voltage transformation as near aspractically possible to the load foreconomy and distribution of power.Typical loads for dry type distributiontransformers include lighting, heating, air conditioners, fans and machinetools. Such loads are found in com-mercial, institutional, industrial andresidential structures.

Features, Benefitsand Functions• UL Listed• 60 Hz operation• Short-term overload capability as

required by ANSI.• Meet NEMA ST-20 sound levels

Standards and CertificationsIndustry StandardsAll Cutler-Hammer dry type distributionand control transformers are built andtested in accordance with applicableNEMA, ANSI, and IEEE Standards. All 600 volt class transformers areUL listed unless otherwise noted.

Seismic QualifiedCutler-Hammer dry type distributiontransformers are seismically qualified, and exceed requirements of theUniform Building Code (UBC) andCalifornia Code Title 24.

Product SpecificationsFrequencyCutler-Hammer standard dry typedistribution transformers are designedfor 60 Hertz operation. Transformersrequired for other frequencies are avail-able and must be specifically designed.

Overload CapabilityShort-term overload is designed intotransformers as required by ANSI. Drytype distribution transformers willdeliver 200% nameplate load for one-half hour; 150% load for one-hour; and125% load for four-hours withoutbeing damaged provided that a con-stant 50% load precedes and followsthe overload. See ANSI C57.96-01.250for additional limitations.

Continuous overload capacity is notdeliberately designed into a trans-former because the design objective isto be within the allowed winding tem-perature rise with nameplate loading.

Insulation System and Temperature RiseIndustry standards classify insulationsystems and rise as shown below:

The design life of transformers havingdifferent insulation systems is thesame — the lower temperature systemsare designed for the same life as thehigher temperature systems.

EnclosuresCutler-Hammer Type EP encapsulatedtransformers utilize a NEMA 3R ratedenclosure as standard.

Sound LevelsAll Cutler-Hammer 600 volt classgeneral purpose dry type distributiontransformers are designed to meetNEMA ST-20 levels listed here. Lowersound levels are available and must bespecially designed.

Winding TerminationsPrimary and secondary windings areterminated in the wiring compartment.Encapsulated units have copper leadsor stabs brought out for connections.Lugs are not supplied with thesetransformers. Cutler-Hammer recom-mends external cables be rated 90°C(sized at 75°C ampacity) for encapsu-lated designs.

Series-Multiple WindingsSeries-multiple windings consist of2 similar coils in each winding whichcan be connected in series or parallel(multiple). Transformers with series-multiple windings are designated withan "X" or "/" between the voltageratings, such as voltages of "120/240"or "240 X 480." If the series-multiplewinding is designated by an "X," thewinding can be connected only for aseries or parallel. With the "/" designa-tion, a mid-point also becomes availablein addition to the series or parallel con-nection. As an example, a 120 X 240winding can be connected for either120 (parallel) or 240 (series), but a120/240 winding can be connected for120 (parallel), or 240 (series), or 240with a 120 mid-point.
