Letters of Appreciation 20 November 1943

Dear Captain Gulbranson On the occasion of our departure from Fort Pierce after

a most enjoyable and instructive visit may I convey to you personally and through you to all the officers and men of the USNATB the appreciation of all ranks of the 1118th Enginshyeer Combat Group for the many courtesies extended the privileges enjoyed and the facilities placed at our disposal

Our training while here was of course entirely different from anything previously experienced in the routine of the engineer soldier and naturally stimulated the greatest intershyest I am satisfied that we all profited greatly from the high standard of instruction through which the school operated and it will bemiddot our purpose in the forthcoming exercises in the Chesapeake area and later to justify the efforts put forth in our behalf by the very able corps of instructors

Cordially yours J A CUNNINGHAM Colonel Corps of Engineers Commanding

22 November 1943 Dear Colonel Cunningham

Among books of interest recomshymended for reading by men in service on their liberty time are described here

Jean Helion in They Shall Not Have Me tells of his capture by the Germans when his section of the French army disintegrates his experiences in a prison camp at Orleans his forced labor on a German farm and on a prison ship The sensational part of his story is his carefully planned inshygenious escape

Angel of The Navy The Story of a WAVE by Joan Angel is an account of the authors experishyences in the first group of WAVES trained at Cedar Falls and with the first hospital corpsshymen trained at Bethesda Naval Hospital preparatory to active duty at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital

Richard Llewellyn author of How Green Was My Valley has a new novel None But The Lonely Heart The author looks at life through the eyes of Ernie Mott an inarticulate London Cockney Llewellyn is with the Welsh Guards and when last heard from he was a captain in Africa

Journey In The Dark by Martin Flavin is the story of an average American who wanted success above everything and who achieved it in part and yet never escapes from the prison of his loneliness

Shalom Asch writes a novel The Apostle around the life of St Paul his work and the relishygious and social conditions imporshytant in the development of Chrisshytianity

Thanksgiving Day i3 properly a day of feasting but it should be primarily a day of grateful prayshyer A man should be grateful for the share of the worlds goods which have been given him be it greater or less It may be asserted as a rule that those who are anishymated by a grateful sense towards their eartbly benefactors for fashyvors will seldom fail in thankfulshyness to the Divine middotGiver

The public of today has quite generallv- lost sight of the religious character of Thanksgiving Day and it ha~ become a feast day only in the literal and actual middot sense They forget that our first thought on Thanksgiving sfould be a prayshyer of thanks to the Giver of all good and perfect gifts for all the favors and mercies of the year

One of our gr2atest middot State pashypers the Declaration of Indepenshydence recognizes our depen lence upon Him and there is recognishytion of His law although it is not direct in the Constitution of the United States To appreciate a gift properly is the best way of honorshying the giver Setting lllSid~ a speshycial day of thanksgiving as is done in America is an illustration of the faith of the nation in tbe belief that all our bounty is from God

We are indebted to God not only for the life He has given us but also for its preservation and continuance for a s only an Alshymighty Hand could have created us so none but an Almighty powshyer can sustain us Not only must we say with the prophet Thy hands 0 Lord have made me and fashioned me but with the sane inspired writer we must exc1aim If Thou turnest away Thy face Thy creatures shall be tr-0ubled Thou shalt take away their breath and they shall fail and shall return to teir dust He is the life of our life Every day we liv~ every breath we breathe every pulsation of our leart is a fresh manifestashytion of Divine Power and a new expression of Divine mercy

I have received your splendid letter of 21 November 1943 and appreciate very much the sentiments expressed in it I wish to take this occasion to state as I have at other times that the officer~and men of the 1118th Engineer Combat Group were outstanding in the performance of their duties while here and also in their conduct

In wishing you and youl officers and men the very best I know that I am expressing not only my own feelings but the sincere good wishes of the officers and men of this base

I hope that in the course of events in the future I shall seemiddot you and that we may be shipmates again
