All the trees which were nurtured by many in the past many years were razed to the ground within no time. The removal of trees in one stroke will have far reaching consequences in the weather conditions of Chennai for the past many years. As IEEE members we should try to organize some societal events to protect the trees at least in future from such mishaps. There are many ways of supporting them with the already available logs from the fallen trees, which could prop up the ones which are still healthy, in a permanent manner so that in the unfortunate event of such nature in the future, it will be saved. We should have a program to educate the youngsters in this line and also plan a tree planting drive in selected areas. Interconnecting trees appropriately will also help in sustaining them. These are regularly practiced in foreign countries successfully. Coming to the events taken up by colleges, I appreciate the enthusiasm of the students and the faculty guiding them. I would like to reiterate that India stands second only to the United States in the membership count. But our visibility is far from being the second in the world. Countries like Japan, Korea, Australia, which have far less number of members are shining high as far as visibility is concerned. I hence once again request you all to take up new and challenging activities in your area of interest and bring our chapter and thus our region to top level. Those of you, who have already taken up many activities, please volunteer for positions in IEEE at various levels. Also, as indicated in my earlier newsletters, apply for appropriate awards, which are in plenty at IEEE. The Annual Meet and awards function of the IEEE Madras Section for the year 2016 is being planned in the 1 st week of Feb 2017 and I personally invite all the members to make it a point to attend and provide your feedback for improving our activities in the forthcoming years. I urge all the Student Branches, Society Chapters and Affinity Groups to submit their activity reports for the year 2016 to facilitate the consolidation of the Section report and decide on various awards to the Section OUs. Before concluding I would like to wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year ahead 2017, wherein let all your dream projects and aspirations come true. Till next time, Yours voluntarily M. A. Message from Chairman

    Dear Members,

    Season’s Greetings

Once again Chennai has a bout of the effects of climate change – cyclone Vardha,

which has made Chennai almost a bare land. All the trees which were nurtured by

many in the past many years were razed to the ground within no time. The removal

of trees in one stroke will have far reaching consequences in the weather

conditions of Chennai for the past many years.

As IEEE members we should try to organize some societal events to protect the trees at least in future

from such mishaps. There are many ways of supporting them with the already available logs from the

fallen trees, which could prop up the ones which are still healthy, in a permanent manner so that in the

unfortunate event of such nature in the future, it will be saved. We should have a program to educate the

youngsters in this line and also plan a tree planting drive in selected areas. Interconnecting trees

appropriately will also help in sustaining them. These are regularly practiced in foreign countries

    successfully.

Coming to the events taken up by colleges, I appreciate the enthusiasm of the students and the faculty

guiding them. I would like to reiterate that India stands second only to the United States in the

membership count. But our visibility is far from being the second in the world. Countries like Japan,

Korea, Australia, which have far less number of members are shining high as far as visibility is

concerned. I hence once again request you all to take up new and challenging activities in your area of

interest and bring our chapter and thus our region to top level. Those of you, who have already taken up

many activities, please volunteer for positions in IEEE at various levels. Also, as indicated in my earlier

newsletters, apply for appropriate awards, which are in plenty at IEEE.

The Annual Meet and awards function of the IEEE Madras Section for the year 2016 is being planned in

the 1st week of Feb 2017 and I personally invite all the members to make it a point to attend and provide

your feedback for improving our activities in the forthcoming years. I urge all the Student Branches,

Society Chapters and Affinity Groups to submit their activity reports for the year 2016 to facilitate the

consolidation of the Section report and decide on various awards to the Section OUs.

Before concluding I would like to wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year ahead – 2017, wherein

let all your dream projects and aspirations come true.

Monkey Types 12 Words Per Minute With Brain-Computer Interface: “To be or not to be. That is the

question.” That is also the text that Monkey J typed out using a brain implant to control a computer cursor. To be

clear, the monkey didn’t know it was copying Shakespeare, and it had no deep thoughts about Hamlet’s famous

monologue. Monkey J and its colleague, Monkey L, were both trained to use their neural implants to move a cursor

over a computer screen, hitting circles as they turned green. Stanford University researchers placed letters on those

targets to simulate the typing task. So to tap out the line from Hamlet, first the “T” circle was illuminated, then the

    “O,” and so on. https://goo.gl/UNmjVG

A Cigarette-Smoking Robot for Better Lung Disease Research: For the good of humanity and medical research,

Harvard scientists have invented a robot that smokes cigarettes. Well, calling it a robot may be a bit of a stretch—

it’s more of a lab instrument. But the device does puff on up to 10 cigarettes at a time, taking in the smoke and

channeling it to a tiny chip lined with living cells from human lungs. This “lung-on-a-chip” can be used to study

how lung cells react to smoke, in intimate detail and with a level of verisimilitude that animal studies can’t match.

Why the Internet Needs Cognitive Protocols: Networks will break down without new biologically inspired

routing. The future Internet will need smarter routing algorithms to handle diverse data flows and prevent failures.

Although there are no tried-and-true solutions yet, early designs might follow an architecture like this one.

Beyond Touch: Tomorrow’s Devices Will Use MEMS Ultrasound to Hear Your Gestures: Touch screens are

on the way out; piezoelectric gesture control is on the way in. Today, we control our electronic world by touch—we

tap, we swipe, we pinch and zoom. The touch interface went from being a novelty back in 2007, when Apple first

brought it to the iPhone, to a ubiquitous feature in less than a decade. It is so commonplace that toddlers declare

nontouch displays broken when the screen doesn’t respond to their fingers. But touch isn’t the end of the story. You

can’t use it when you’re dripping in the shower, you can’t wear a touch screen on your eyeglasses, and you probably

won’t explore virtual reality by swiping and pinching a handheld slab of glass. This world of gesture magic is

coming, thanks to recent breakthroughs in ultrasonic microelectromechanical systems, or MEMS.

Instead of Dropping Bombs, Can Drones Locate Unexploded Ones?: In much of the world, an American drone

flying overhead means danger: Predator drones and the like can unleash fury out of the deep blue sky. But drones

can also help war-torn countries recover, argued Ryan Baker, CEO of drone maker Arch Aerial, at a SXSW

Interactive talk yesterday. His company hopes to use its drones to identify locations that are likely to be riddled with

unexploded bombs from past wars. https://goo.gl/PW0QJ9

RFID + Camera + Lock = Smart Mailbox: A self-locking mailbox could someday flag down delivery drones and

intelligently screen your driveway for intruders. Columbus State University computer scientist Lydia Ray presented

the technology, called the ADDSMART project, during a 20 October session at the annual IEEE Ubiquitous

Computing, Electronics, and Mobile Communication Conference in New York City. The project aims to achieve

two goals: clearly marking addresses for autonomous vehicles, and reducing the energy and data storage costs of

home surveillance systems. An early prototype mailbox attachment suggests that the trick, in both cases, may be

    radio-frequency identification. https://goo.gl/egB65v

AI and Big Data vs. Air Pollution: Physics simulations and AI combine to give pollution forecasts to city dwellers

in Beijing and beyond. Beijing and other Chinese cities are choking under a blanket of smog. It’s so thick in Tianjin

that planes can’t land. Authorities have issued the first “red alert” of 2016, and 1,200 Beijing-area factories were

ordered to shut down or to reduce production, according press reports. This winter, officials will be equipped with

forecasting tools from IBM and Microsoft that they tested last year. IBM’s tool, used by the city government, is

designed to incorporate data from traditional sources, such as the 35 official multipollutant air-quality monitoring

stations in Beijing, and lower-cost but more widespread sources, such as environmental monitoring stations, traffic

systems, weather satellites, topographic maps, economic data, and even social media. Microsoft’s system

incorporates data from over 3,000 stations around the country. Both IBM’s and Microsoft’s tools blend traditional

physical models of atmospheric chemistry with data-hungry statistical tools such as machine learning to try to make

better forecasts in less time. https://goo.gl/U6RuFU

A Blockchain Currency That Beats Bitcoin On Privacy: Zcash’s new cryptocurrency promises complete

anonymity. Zcash is identical to Bitcoin in many ways. It’s founded on a digital ledger of transactions called a

blockchain that exists on an army of computers that can be anywhere in the world. But it differs from Bitcoin in one

critical way: It is completely anonymous. Although privacy was a motivating factor for Bitcoin’s flock of early

adopters, it didn’t deliver the goods. For those who want to digitally replicate the experience of slipping on a ski

mask and handing over an envelope of unmarked bills, Zcash is now the way to go. https://goo.gl/UkRjJi

Germanium Can Take Transistors Where Silicon Can’t: The material inside the first transistors could have a

new life at the cutting edge. Germanium was an early transistor material. Now its charge-carrying abilities and

advanced fabrication technology make it an attractive material for future chips. As a proof of concept, the author and

his team used germanium-on-insulator wafers to construct inverters containing first planar transistors and then

    FinFETs. https://goo.gl/MezacF

The Great AI Awakening: Google has advanced the functionality of its Google Translate service with artificial

intelligence (AI), reflecting its commitment to deliver products enabled by machine learning. The innovation

    illustrates AI's transformation, engineered by the Google Brain division, to overcome the limitations of symbolic AI;

these include time-consuming training and programs' strict adherence to clear rules and definitions. Google Brain's

breakthroughs in neural-network-based deep learning demonstrated a computer can observe raw, unlabeled data and

from it extract complex human concepts. Google Translate's evolution is based on research into neural-network

frameworks that accommodate not only static, but also dynamic structures, such as language. Fundamental linguistic

prediction could potentially set a standard for other intelligent tasks that have the outward appearance of thinking.

Google Brain scientists tapped the concept of "word embeddings" to give plausibility to the theory of neural

language translation, and then proceeded to scale it up to production level over two years. Google CEO Sundar

Pichai distinguishes current AI applications from the ultimate goal of artificial general intelligence, or general-

purpose, context-aware AI that can follow implicit instead of explicit instructions. Pichai believes a general

computational facility with human language can be achieved by adhering to this model, and from that can be laid the

groundwork for more impressive AI capabilities. https://goo.gl/USi2e0

Don’t shun 3D printers – they might save your life one day: Talking only about 3D printers and guns is like

watching a movie in fast forward, slowing down only to watch the bits where people die.But in the whole story of

3D printing, guns are only one short scene - the rest of the story is far more uplifting. A whole research industry has

flourished with advancements in medicine, manufacturing and architecture - breakthroughs which have actually

    been developed for decades. https://goo.gl/j3Fv3W

The future of 3D printing lies in space and with an extra dimension: The concept and use of 3D printing is now

well established, with a large selection of printers available today, ranging from your low-price small 3D units for

home to the larger and more robust industrial printers. The technology itself has also evolved and is now being

implemented in a vast range of industries from food to automotive, aerospace, construction, health and many others.

There are still a few things holding back 3D printing from any mass production over other manufacturing methods,

but it is the technology’s application beyond Earth that it is showing real promise. https://goo.gl/axu5Wc

Four visions, three dimensions: the future of 3D printing: Chances are you’ve heard about 3D printing – or

additive manufacturing as it’s otherwise known: a process that turns computer-aided designs into three-dimensional,

real-world objects with a range of uses, from a range of materials and on a range of scales. But you’ve probably

heard little in terms of the social impact that 3D printing and its associated technologies will likely have. Those

possible impacts are exactly what we’re investigating at Lancaster University and the University of Wollongong.

We’ve identified four potential scenarios that could eventuate in a world that embraces 3D printing and, crucially,

how those scenarios could affect everyday life. https://goo.gl/k1DRwO

Would you eat a 3D printed pizza?: Could you imagine serving a 3D printed turkey for Christmas lunch? Or

munching on a 3D printed pizza for an afternoon snack? This is not as far fetched as it sounds. While 3D printers

have mainly been in the news for their ability to manufacture inedible goods, they are increasingly being used for

culinary endeavours. 3D food printers extrude soft liquid edible matter through nozzles that build up layer by layer

in patters directed by a computer program. They can pump out everything from to chocolates, confectionery, biscuits

and pancakes, to pasta, pizza and other savoury snacks. News reports and industry blogs are very positive about

what 3D food printing can offer. They have covered such events as Michelin-starred chefs experimenting with 3D

food printers in pop-up restaurants in Europe. The media have also reported on the potential for 3D printing to cater

for astronauts, air travellers and people in emergency situations. https://goo.gl/S3vptO

Five things you need to know about fitness trackers: Most modern fitness trackers are electronic devices you

wear on your wrist to track steps, overall physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep. They typically work with

a smartphone app or website that allow you to track your progress over time using graphs and figures. Advanced

fitness trackers can also record heart rate and GPS related outcomes, like your route, speed and distance. People can

be active without using fitness trackers, but their self-monitoring features help you set realistic goals and track your

progress. Self-monitoring is an effective behaviour change technique. So let’s have a look at the evidence about

    these trackers. https://goo.gl/868bIa

Predicting power outages from soil moisture data: Most electrical outages are caused by falling trees or limbs

bringing down power lines. After a major storm, it may take weeks to fully restore power. Fortunately, scientists

are getting better at predicting where and when such damages is likely to occur, which gives utility companies and

emergency workers a head start on hurricane response. The trick, according to Steven Quiring, professor of

atmospheric sciences at Ohio State University, is combining analysis of wind and soil moisture data. Trees are far

more likely to be blown over if the soil in which they are rooted is soaked. And conversely, drought conditions make

trees limbs brittle and more likely to be broken during a wind storm. https://goo.gl/oRFdul
