Rtn. Raphaël, President:

- welcomed the guests to the 28 August 2013 meeting and asked them to introduce themselves. - noted the apologies from Rtns. Daniel, Hon. Member, Sally, SaA, John C., John G., Alex and Steffen. - informed the members that Rtn. Stephen’s, Treasurer wife, Kathleen, has been ill for the past three weeks, but has now returned home. The RCBS will be sending her some flowers this week.

- thanked the following Member for inviting a Guest to our meeting:

Rtn. Udo for inviting Juliana Rosenboom.

- welcomed former member Rtn. Dr. Patrick A. Monsarrat (right) back to Bali after having lived and worked for some time in Penang, Malaysia where he had been a member of the RC of Tanjung Bungah. He now intends to re-join the RCBS. Welcome back Rtn. Patrick. - commended on the good mix of members and guests attending our meeting. He also asked that we all members and guests speak English during the meetings and among ourselves, since the RCBS is an English-speaking club. Thank you. - noted that unfortunately the Guest Speaker, Ibu Ayu Mandala, who was going to speak about the Protection and Preservation of the Balinese Language, could not come to the meeting at the last minute. But then added that this would be good chance for some fellowship among those attending.

- mentioned that 21 September 2013 will be the annual International Coastal Cleanup Day in Bali. This Club event was first organized by former members Rtns. Irene Millar and Abdul Rahim two years ago. “During Bali’s first-ever International Coastal Cleanup, seven local organizations helped support 195 volunteers who cleaned 5.2 miles of beach in 90 minutes. They collected 6,771 items at Seminyak Beach on the ocean and along the Petanu River.” http://www.oceanconservancy.org/our-work/marine-debris/2012-data-release-behind-the-scenes.html

This year’s event will be organized by Rtns. Guy and Christiane, PE

- reminded the members that on Wednesday, 25 September, 2013 we will be having a JOINT meeting with our co-sponsor Club - the RC of Bali Denpasar. 110 % attendance from our club members would be appreciated. - thanked Rtn. Jörg for hosting his Open House at Casa Santai, Jl. Mertanadi on Monday, 26 August 2013, at which many of the RCBS members attended enjoying some very sumptuous food and drinks, before touring the stylish villa rentals his complex offers.

Rtn. Doris, VP gave the members a little update concerning the upcoming Muntigunung Vocational Tour scheduled for Sunday, 29 September. Rtn. Daniel Elber, Honorary Member has invited us to join him on a ‘relaxing’ walk to see what NEW work he and his team are doing in the northern part of Bali. This mini Trek will definitely be easier than in previous years. When Rtn. Daniel visits us as our Guest Speaker on 11 September, he will give us more details.

Rtn. Patrick, CP announced that the RCBS Bike-a-Fund is BACK and is scheduled for Sunday, 27 October 2013. This SOBEK Bike Tour will start at Kintamani and is basically a 25 km. bicycle ride downhill (most of the way) ending in Tampaksiring (north of Ubud). The very special price for this tour is only IDR 300,000 (published rate –Adult US$ 79.00 & Children (7-15 years) US$ 52.00), but Rtn. Patrick is hoping to raise IDR 15 million, so as to purchase 600 Library books for an Elementary School located in Kerobokan. So ALL riders will need LOTS of sponsors to reach this year’s goal. More details will be forthcoming.

Rtn. Peter E. reported some GREAT news about the Club’s Micro-credit (Goat) Project in Nusa Penida. A baby goat has been born!!! He also announced that we have reached our goal of raising enough funds to purchase 84 goats. Next, Rtn. Peter also thanked the Club members who attended his successful Art Exhibition at Lestari, which had a very good turnout. He generously donated 10% of the proceeds from the art sold to the Yayasan Senyum Bali (Smile Foundation). http://www.senyumbali.org Rtns. Detlev & Lusi told the members about attended the wedding of Rtn. Kuhn’s, PDF daughter on Sunday, 25 August at Taman Begawan, Tanjung Benoa. There were 1,200 attendees with a large section reserved for Rotarians. It was a huge event with many different groups of people in attendance.

Rtn. Mary Northmore, Honorary Member announced that on Friday, 13 September, she will be speaking at Bar Luna, Jln. Gootama, Ubud at 19:00 about her recent trip to Iran. Members need to come EARLY as seating is very limited. Former member, Rtn. Chris from the RC of Bali Canggu announced a Benefit Dinner for the Yayasan Kerti Praja on Tuesday, 3 September at 18:00 at the Desa Seni Village, Canggu. All proceeds will be donated to HIV awareness and Testing programs. Tickets will be on sale for IDR 350,000 - all inclusive. Rtn. Raphaël informed the members that five RCBS members (Rtns. Raphaël, Doris, Sarita, Jörg and Barb.) attended the D3420 sponsored ‘Seamless Seminar’ which took place on Saturday, 24 August 2013 at the Mercure Bali Harvestland Hotel in Kuta. Three very important RI topics were covered: Membership Development, Public Relations and The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Before asking Rtns. Sarita and Jörg to share their Seminar experience with the members, he mentioned that during the daylong meeting, the new RI ‘Masterbrand Signature’ logo was announced (below). Secondly, another significant change that has taken place is the way that Rotarians should address each other. Previously, we addressed our Club President as President Raphaël. Now, RI suggests that we address him simply as ‘Rtn. Raphael, President.’ It is thought that this will bring about a more ‘egalitarian’ atmosphere within Rotary.

Rtn. Jörg told the members that the ‘Public Relations’ section of the Seminar was led by the chief editor of the Philippine Tatler, a monthly magazine devoted to informing its readers about influential people in business, cultural, social and sporting life in the Philippines. Rtn. Ursula ‘Chit’ Lijauco, PDG showed the participant how to analyze photos and carefully place/position them on a web site, because every ‘detail’ can be seen. Photos showing Rotarians only socializing should not be published, because they are only important to individual members and not to the general public. Rotary Photos should always be in connection with projects and / or activities benefitting the community.

Furthermore, Rtn. Ursula (right) spoke about ‘effective writing’ concerning Rotary press releases. Press release should have the key information in short form, but written as a ‘feature story,’ with a ‘Human Interest’ focus. Here the KISS rule (Keep It Simple Stupid) should always be in the writer’s mind. During the Q & A session and to liven up the meeting, Rtn. Jörg asked if newspaper reporters here in Bali needed / expected / appreciated a little ‘thank you’ for their ‘note’ taking. Rtn. Suzana Chandra, PP from the Rotary Club of Bali Denpasar shared her experiences concerning this very interesting question. She told the participants, if a Rotarian wanted to place an article in the Bali press, a THANK YOU was a very good idea. For further advice regarding this topic, please contact Rtn. Suzana directly at <[email protected]>

Rtn. Sarita, PP then took the opportunity to discuss what she learned at the Seamless Seminar regarding The Rotary Foundation (TRF) - the root of Rotary Humanitarianism. It is through the Foundation that the funds for Global Grants (US$ 50,000 to US$ 200,000) and international projects are funded. For example, the Global Grants that our club submits to RI, NEED funds from TRF in order to successfully implement them. For RI to fund its approved Grants – it requires donations from Every Rotarian Every Year from around the world. Any and ALL contributions are welcome. Without our HELP – TRF cannot continue to do their worthwhile humanitarian work. Rtn. Sarita, PP explained that there is no mandatory requirement from RI for a member to contribute a US$100 each year (EREY - Every Rotarian Every Year), but they HIGHLY encourage each Rotarian to consider helping TRF reach its annual goal. In finishing her brief report, she said during the 2012 –

2013 year, the RCBS only managed to collectively donate US$1,194 to TRF. This was the lowest amount our club has ever donated. In previous years, the average has been approximately US$ 5,000 per year with the exception of Rtns. Anita and Patrick years. With this, Rtn, Sarita strongly recommended that each member this year contribute at least US$100 to TRF, so the Club can reach its goal of US$4,500 (45 members). Hopefully, we will see several members receive a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) recognition.
