reaches the switch or thereabouts. The other 70 percent accounts for missingthe switch completely, but being reasonably close that I can look for it byfeeling my way around.

Faith, I believe, can be somewhat similar to this. We’ve been shown by Jesusour destination hoped for – his heavenly kingdom. So we fix our gaze on itthen close the door behind us, leaving the old life of sin and choosing insteadto journey towards his Promised Land. As soon as the door is closed there’sno looking or turning back. Yet we are caught in a dilemma as the pathforward isn’t necessarily clear. Nevertheless, it is important to remainsteadfast, since we’ve already seen a glimpse of the Lord’s promise. Sofirstly, we let our spiritual eyes adjust to the surrounding darkness, that is, tobe more aware of the temptations and evils in the world. Then as we detect asubtle glimmer of light – i.e. Christ’s light of hope – we take courage andbegin to step forward. Along the way, some missteps may occur, but we canalways stop, refocus, and return to Christ’s light through the sacraments –especially Confession and Holy Communion. Should we fall or run into awall, we can get up again and continue on towards Jesus, following his voice, being guided by the gentle light which shows the way back to our heavenlyhome. And we can be assured the door will finally be opened!

The Canaanite woman in the Gospel was a pagan, meaning she was in thedark without a history of faith in the One True God. Yet as soon as she foundthe light in Jesus Christ, she closed the door to her unenlightened past andwholly committed herself to the Saviour. Admittedly, she didn’t quite reachhim the first time as her request was initially rejected. Still, she still did notlose heart. She kept her faith and relentlessly sought the Lord’s mercy, forwhich she received a two-fold reward – her daughter being cured as well ashaving her faith affirmed. Imagine what a thrill it would be for a pianist to betold by Mozart or Beethoven, “You’re a great musician.” So could there be agreater honour or a worthier affirmation than to be told by Christ himself,“Woman, you have great faith”? Likewise, may we never be complacent, forthe Lord always yearns to increase our faith, being eager to open the doors toheaven. Hence, what we need is a fervent and persevering faith, one which isnot diminished by occasional setbacks or deterred by tribulations. Seeing ourfaith, then, the Lord may respond, ‘Let your wish be granted. Come into mykingdom!’
