A friendly personality and a passionate lover of Science, this week we shine our light on Ripak Kundu. He started as a teacher of Chemistry for classes 8 to 12 in European Standard School (ESS) and is currently continuing his job there. When asked about why he decided to take up the profession of teaching, Kundu says “It was all for my students and I wanted to teach them what I have learnt. Learning has no limits, so as I learn every day, I want to pass on my knowledge on to my beloved students.” A keen lover of sports, when free, Kundu plays badminton, listens to music and also goes fishing on vacations. Eager to create an institution of chemistry in the future Kundu says “Chemistry is a subject that fascinated me throughout my life. Thus I want to open an institute in the future where students will be taught chemistry individually and with proper attention. It will be an institute with mixture of both theory and practical education and that too with the most equipments available.”

Cats have a habit of scratching furniture. We all know that scratching is a form of exercise for cats, unfortunately that excuses won’t work with our parents. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Read on more to find out how you can keep Fuzzy a way from the furniture.

Shoo! Whenever you see your cat scratching on carpets or furnitures, yell at them. You could say NO or shoo to scare them.

The classic paper or canvas lamp-shades are fun to make. But what if you can make super easy and beautiful glitter lamp shades and that too with bottles. Here’s how

You will need• Large unlabelled glass bottles

open at the bottom• Tape• Glue• Glitter (preferably silver)

Instructions1. Put tape around the neck of

the bottle.2. Brush glue or adhesive on

the entire bottom half of the bottle.

3. Sprinkle glitter on top of the glue.

4. Leave the bottle to dry and pull off the tape to give a two toned look to the bottle.

amErican paddLEfish poLyodon spathuLa

wingardium LEviosa or Just physics! You will need• A straw• A ping pong ball

How to1. Hold the straw in your mouth

and point it straight up.2. Blow very hard through the

straw and make a good stream of air.

3. Place the ball gently in the air stream and watch it float!

4. Keep the ball floating and do not chase it. Remember prac-tice makes perfect.

• The name Polyodon is derived from a Greek word, meaning “many teeth”

• The American Paddlefish pro-duces up to 600,000 eggs in fast-flowing waters every two to five years.

• The Paddlefish is capable of surviving for about 20 years.

• The fish cannot be caught using bait as they feed off plankton so other methods of fishing like snagging is used.

• The appearance of the paddle-fish resembles that of a shark, particularly their tail fins.

• Paddlefish eat microscopic plants and animals (plankton).

• The paddlefish’s skeleton is made up of cartilage rather than bone. baizid haque joarder

ExplanationThe floating ping pong ball follows what is known as Bernoulli’s Principle. When the air from the straw flows around the outside of the ball, the air flows evenly around each side. While gravity pulls the ball downwards, the

pressure below the ball from the moving stream of air forces it up-wards. As a result all the forces acting on the ball are balanced and the ball levitates in mid-air. This is the same principle, which allows airplanes to fly in the air. saMa e deen

That way Fuzzy will understand that their actions have upset you. Be a little patient while you are at it. It will take time for your pet to get disciplined.

Toys Provide more toys for your cat so that it keeps them away from the furniture. Give them something which has a rough surface like a ball or an old rug. You could also crumple a piece of paper, make a hole on any one of the edges and attach a long string to it. Dangle it in front of

your cat, and he/she will be jumping with joy.

Patience As mentioned before, this will take some time for both you and your cat to master. If all else fails, gently sprinkle water at your cat when they scratch furnitures. Whatever you do, DO NOT pour water on them, it’ll just make them mad and they won’t listen to you at all. Also, they might end up scratching you.

l The bassoon is the largest instrument from the woodwind family.

l Bassoons were originally called dulcians or curtals.

l The bassoon has 8 feet of tubing that is bent in a U shape to make it easier for the player to play.

l Since it is heavy it is supported by a seat strap hooked over the player’s chair.

l To create music, the bassoonist has to blow air through a double reed, which makes the reed vibrate.

l Notes are played by covering different tone holes with fingers , along the side of the body.

l Every note played requires different finger combinations over the key holes.

If you’re not already ticking the calen-dar, Halloween is just around the cor-ner. And to capture it’s creepy yet cele-bratory spirit, Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin brings out the perfect bedtime read. Click, Clack, Boo! Is a light, enjoy-able Halloween-themed story adapted from its predecessor Click, Clack, Moo. This time, however, the barn animals wish to party with Farmer Brown, in-stead of going against him.

The story proceeds as Farmer Brown, who is terrified of Halloween, puts out candy for the night’s trick-or-treaters and runs into bed in fright. In the meantime, the barn animals were

This summer, Disney is bringing back the heat with the opening of the Disney movie Teen beach movie soundtrack starring your favorite Disney stars Ross Lynch and Maia Mitchell. Ask yourself, what is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “summer”? T answer should be simple, beach, paradise or some place to relax and enjoy the bright summer sun. There are number of various songs inspired by 1960s hard rock and roll music with a typical high school musical drama with a beach in the background. The lyrics are clean

throwback 60s and soothing and some even contain a romantic feel to it. On the other hand there are a few songs with very cheesy lines. Mostly, what shines through is how enjoyable rock and roll music can be if it is carried out with smart lyrics and clever musicians. The soundtrack features musicians with original songs and mixing them up with classic genres. This fun and family-friendly collection of old school style rock and roll movies are charmed by goofy lyrics and catchy tunes which will have you tap your feet even without realising it. syed azraf zaMan

1. They call me the “red planet”, as I’m covered with red dust that looks like rust (hey, that rhymes!).2. I have two moons, both shaped like potatoes - so, if you happen to come across a giant potato-shaped object in the sky, it’s probably one of them!3. A day on Mars is just over 24 hours long- almost the same as Earth.4. By the time I’ve orbited the Sun once, my nearest pal Earth has already done it twice!5. Between me and my best friend, the Earth, stands the notorious Asteroid belt (I hate those goons).

6. I have plenty of craters and volcanoes on my surface. My biggest volcano, Olympus Mons, is thrice as high as Earth’s Mount Everest!7. I have seasons too, but it’s much chillier here than on Earth, as I’m further from the Sun.8. The storms of red dust I often experience would make Earth’s storms look like picnics!9. I have some dried-up river beds on my surface, along with some compounds scientists on Earth believe are crucial for living things to survive. Does that mean I once supported life? You’ll have to find out!
