For the past 45 years or so, Chavara Cultural Centre Kochi has been playing a very effective, pivotal role in building lasting bonds across communities, by promoting folk art, culture, education and inter-religious harmony.

I am really happy to note that our efforts have helped a great deal in renewing our society to become more tolerant and open-minded. In fact, through our initiatives, we have been able to empower individuals to communicate positively and respect cultures that are different from their own.

Shri. P. Sachidanandan who writes under the pseudonym Anand, is

a prolific Malayalam fic�on writer / essayist by passion and a Civil Engineer by profession. Born in Irinjalakuda - Trichur, Anand's fic�on reads almost like texts of high philosophy. His works do not conform exactly to any of the fic�onal forms currently in vogue. Considered as among the noted living intellectuals in the country, his works are noted for their philosophical flavor, historical context and humanism. Sharing his insights on his celebrated book during the Let's Talk event held at Chavara Cultural Centre Kochi, the award-winning li�erateur observed:

“There exists a strong rela�onship between engineering, ideology and u�lity. Every man-made vanander�cal structure – whether faith-based or science-derived – has to come down to a horizontal level. That is an immutable law of nature. Engineering structures, over periods of �me, become weaker while structures of faith and ideology become stronger. Similar to physical structure, these metaphysical constructs offer spaces and solace for humans.”

Both Shri. Sudarshan She�y - Curator (KMB 2016) and Shri. Riyas Komu - KBF Secretary were among the audience of two hundred literary enthusiasts at the hour-long discussion with Anand.

Chavara Cultural Centre, Kochi played the gracious host for two excep�onal

souls as they delved deep into a scathing study of the democra�c system prevalent in India �ll date. Shri P K Hormis Tharakan IPS is the former Chief of India's external intelligence agency - Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). He is currently the Trustee of the Kochi Biennale Founda�on. Excerpts of the evening discussion between the award-winning journalist-author, Shri Josy Joseph and the intelligence expert Shri. Hormis Tharakan are highlighted for those who missed the talk.

Shri. Josy Joseph said, “When I first began working on the book in 2007, the purpose was to relay stories without varnish from the mortuary of reportage that I had accumulated over my journalis�c career. The theme is evident from the book's cover: the home of a debt-ridden farmer who commi�ed suicide against a backdrop of the Mumbai skyline.

It has been my experience that the corrupt are in the minority. There has been in recent years, efforts at moun�ng an an�-corrup�on movement, but these have not been able to sustain themselves. S�ll, more and more people are recognizing that the status quo needs to change”

Shri. Hormis Tharakan adds, “Corrup�on is the scourge of our democracy. By lis�ng out the wrongdoings of public people, the book serves as a guide to organized corrup�on at the highest levels of power. It is also the story of contemporary India: of everyday corrup�on such as when one applies for a passport through an intermediary or why one is afraid to approach the police. These are the kind of discussions we should be having as a country.”

DIWALI IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT

Kerala's much-awaited fes�val Onam was celebrated in grandeur at Chavara Cultural Centre, Kochi and its educa�onal wing, Chavara Ins�tute of Management and Media Studies (CIMAMS). Tradi�onal Onam games made a big come-back with both students and staff aiming high with the “Uriyadi” and “Ring the Duck”. While the staff danced to the tune of Thiruvaathirakali, the students sang the Onapaatu to the beats of the chenda. Like all �mes, Onam brought the en�re Chavara family together.

Deepavali proved to be an inter-religious experience at Chavara Cultural Centre Kochi on October 28 when people of all religious faiths lit diyas, spreading the glow of love, tolerance and harmony. Jus�ce B Kemal Pasha - Kerala High Court Judge inaugurated the celebra�on. A musical evening of immortal ghazals were rendered by singers Shri. The CMI Educa�on department organized a spirited seminar on the Dra� Na�onal Educa�on Policy 2016 on August 13, 2016 at Chavara Cultural Centre, Kochi. Eminent personali�es and learned scholars from pres�gious educa�onal establishments across Kerala graced the occasion. Students, teachers and parents showed keen interest in finding out the minority implica�ons laid down in the policy dra�.

The chief guest, Rev. Dr. Fr. Xavier Arulraj, Senior Advocate at the High Court of Madras inaugurated the seminar and delivered the key note address. The discussion was

moderated by Fr. Sebas�an Thekkedathu CMI, Chairman & General Councilor for Educa�on and Media.

The first Na�onal Educa�on Policy was formulated in 1968 while the second one was put together in 1986. The government is now in the process of formula�ng a third, new set of Na�onal Educa�on Policy, which served to be the key point of heated discussion at the seminar. Rev. Dr. Arulraj's discussion pondered upon whether the dra� policy actually addressed crucial issues such as caste, creed and the environment. It also explored if human as well as cons�tu�onal

rights have been included in the right propor�on! A lot of opinions were expressed which, in the long run, is bound to make a huge difference in perfec�ng the ul�mate aim of educa�on, which is Libera�on and Empowerment.

The purpose of a National Education Policy is to serve as a comprehensive framework that guides

the development of education in our country. Does the new set of National Education Policy reflect

the national character? Or is it a mockery of our democracy? Let's find out.

PASSPORT TO EMPLOYABILITYTraining a Generation of Employable Youth

Educa�onal ins�tu�ons have an important role to play in addressing skills gaps and equipping young people with the employability skills they need to make a successful transi�on into the workplace. Keeping this role in mind, the mission of Chavara Ins�tute of Management and Media Studies (CIMAMS) has been to

stenable the delivery of “21 century Life Skills” to all students irrespec�ve of caste, creed, merit or financial

standing. CIMAMS provides a pla�orm for the youth to Learn, Earn and Empower themselves. This goes a long way in ensuring that at least one child in every household earns his/her livelihood and thereby elevates the en�re family to a more financially stable circumstance.

The current obstacle that students face, especially in India, is not lack of access to quality educa�on but running the risk of not learning life skills or career-readiness skills that will make them highly employable. Among recruiters, there is a broad understanding of what cons�tute employability. In addi�on to technical knowledge, employers expect poten�al employees to demonstrate a broad range of skills in team-working, communica�on, leadership, confidence and inter-personal ability. To inculcate such skills into the learning curriculum, the teaching staff at CIMAMS add real-world or simulated work experience into the tradi�onal lecture-based curriculum. CIMAMS is fully set to reinforce the need for ac�on with career-oriented Degree / Diploma courses in Hotel Management, Professional Cookery, Airline, Tourism and Hospitality, Cabin Crew and Airport Management.

The theme this year for the World Human Rights Day is to “Stand up for someone's rights today”. Chavara Cultural Centre Kochi decided to “Stand up for Someone's Rights” on December 10, 2016 as the world commemorated World Human Rights Day.

Jus�ce J B Koshy, Ex-Chairperson – Kerala State Human Rights Commission delivered the Keynote Address. Shri. Jacob Punnoos IPS, Retd. State Police Chief and Special Rapporteur-NHRC graced the occasion and urged the audience to

stand up for themselves and fellow human beings as well. Adv. D B Binu, President – RTI Kerala Federa�on moderated the spirited discussion on the “role of the police in ensuring implementa�on of the human rights policies.” Dr. Sr. Mary Joseph CMC, Principal – St. Joseph's College of Teacher Educa�on for Women and Adv. Sandhya Raju, Director – Human Rights Law Network also joined in the discussion. We are all born free. And we all deserve to remain free, irrespec�ve of our caste, creed or gender. But it is simply not enough that we know our fundamental rights. We should have the empathy within us to protect the rights of a fellow human being.

RIGHT TO BEING HUMAN

No police force or court in the world can reach out to every nook and corner to make sure humans are not deprived of their fundamental rights. It is our responsibility too to stand up for ourselves and for our fellow human beings.

With the intent to improve the layman's awareness about human rights, Chavara Cultural Centre, Kochi held an

informative seminar on August 18, 2016. It was led by the Chief Information Commissioner of Kerala,

Shri. Vinson M Paul. He stressed on the fact that the R.T.I. Act is an important milestone in the growth of India's

democratic system and a strong legal tool against corruption.

released in five languages (English, French, Spanish,

Affairs.

The aim of this humble ini�a�ve is to remove the

social s�gma surrounding children who are born with

HIV and are living with this condi�on. The film

ques�ons why people alienate children with HIV /

AIDS. The film helps reinstate the fact that HIV is not transmi�ed through tears, sweat or saliva. A person cannot get HIV from

another individual by shaking their hands, playing together, ea�ng from the same plate or sharing the same bed.

Chavara Inspire Charitable Society (Reg. No: EKM/TC/458/2014) is a

registered humanitarian venture that aims to provide inspiring

programmes and dynamic support in mee�ng the social needs of

children and adults living with HIV / AIDS. This inter alia includes

providing them with Scholarship, Educa�on, Employability Training and

Employment.

According to the Government of Kerala, there are approximately 922

children who are HIV + and the Centre's new ini�a�ve has reinstated

close to 150 of them. The Centre is determined to con�nue its efforts in

Chavara Inspire Charitable Society is the auxiliary wing of Chavara

Cultural Centre, Kochi - a mul�-faceted, socio-cultural endeavour with

diversified non-profit ini�a�ves devoted to the unified development of

Art, Culture, Learning and Inter-religious Harmony. The Centre was

established in 1971, in fond memory of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara -

founder of two mainstream Catholic Religious Ins�tutes in India

“Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI)” as well as “Congrega�on of the

Mother of Carmel” (CMC). Chavara Inspire is led by a team of socially-

responsible individuals including Shri. John Paul (Vice-president), Fr.

Sounds too hard to digest? Well, the truth is that a small

percentage of the human population has a rare

neurological condition known as 'Synesthesia'. The

term loosely means “senses coming together” and has

been derived from the Greek word 'syn' meaning

“together” and 'aesthesis' meaning “sensation.”

Synesthesia takes place when the stimulation of one

sense (for example, the ears) gives rise to an

experience in another second sense (for example, the

eyes). Artists with synesthesia have been known to see

beautiful images while listening to music.

Way back in 1868, St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara prepared a unique and first-of-its-kind instruction manual for Christian families. Titled in Malayalam as “Oru Nalla Appante Chavarul – Kudumba Chattom” (A Testament of a Loving Father), this book was originally meant to be a letter addressed to the native people of Kainakari, teaching them the way of life to be followed in every Christian family. Though the book has been written 150 years ago, the thoughts within the literature are ideal for the present world as well. Today, the contents of this book have been beautifully transformed into an on-screen experience on Shalom TV.

The New Year 2017 began on a spiritually enriching note at Chavara Cultural Centre Kochi. The staff and management set out on a picturesque trip to the ancestral home of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara - "Chavara Bhavan" - located at Kainakary in Alappuzha. Embraced in the lush beauty of paddy fields and whispering backwaters, Chavara Bhavan ins�lls a spiritual calm within all who visit this humble shrine.

Edakka / Idakka

This percussion instrument from Kerala adds an almost melodious, rhythmic charm

to Panchavadyam and Sopana Sangeetham

performances. Considered as the most divine among

“mangala vadyas” (auspicious instruments)

used in Kerala’s temple music, the Edakka is never

placed on the floor when not in use.

Carved into the shape of an hour-glass, the Edakka is both band-based as well as music-based. Though ini�ally confined to Kerala’s temple music, the Edakka has recently gained tremendous exposure in music circles of the East and the West. Edakka is an essen�al accompaniment for Kerala dance forms such as MohinIya�am, Kathakali and Krishnana�am. In Kathakali, the Edakka is played when a female character holds the stage and the Chenda is not played. The different parts of the Edakka

are 'Ku�yi' (main body made of wood) and the 'Va�om' on either side made from so� calf skin. The 'Tholkacha' is the cloth slung over the le� shoulder and the strings from which hangs the idakka. The 4 colorful woolen 'Jeevakol' depicts the 4 Vedas and from this hangs 8 ‘Koduppukal’ on each side. The 64 ‘Koduppukal’ depict the 64 art forms of Kerala. The 6 small holes on the ‘Va�om’ represent the six Indian Shastras.
