Shanghai short and sweet

Shanghai lies on the east coast of China, south of Beijing and north of Hong Kong. The city is divided by the Huang Pu river. The financial district lays to the east (Pudong) while VOK DAMS Shanghai and the former French concession lay to the west (Puxi).

There are two airports in Shanghai. Pu Dong and Hong Qiao. Make sure you know which one you’re going to as they are on opposite ends of the city. It should take ap-proximately an hour from 3 Pudong airport to the city center (approx 170RMB) and be-tween 30 and 40 minutes from Hongqiao airport (80RMB). Traffic conditions and rain can greatly affect the time needed.

The Paris of the East, the Queen of the Orient. As made apparent from its nicknames, Shanghai is known as a city of enchantment. From modern architecture, soaring sky-scrapersand European-style cityscapes to tree-lined neighborhoods, shopping malls and swanky bars, the city is a buzzing modern metropolis that rose out of a small fishing vil-lage in the last 100 years.

We at VOK DAMS have developed a passion for the city (indeed we set up an office here!) and would like to impart some useful information to help you get around, as well as some of Shanghai’s best kept secrets to ensure you have a good time. Enjoy!

China for the Non-Chinese

* Keep your hotel card with you at all times (phone number and address in English and Chinese)* Walking down a busy street you can be pushed, shoved and elbowed out of the way. Don’t take it personal.* Be prepared, spitting is a common sight!* Look in ALL directions before crossing the road and beware, pedestrian crossings don’t have the same rules!* Remember to bargain when shopping at markets!* Most places still don’t accept international credit cards.* International ATMs are not the easiest to find sometimes but will be available within 5-star hotel complexes.* The vast majority of Chinese do not speak English.* Many restaurants close early and are not open during the afternoon.

A short digression on currencies

The Chinese currency is Renminbi (which means “People’s currency”), shortened to RMB or more officially known as CNY. Currency units are Yuan (colloquial: Kuai), Jiao (colloquial: Mao) and Fen. 1 Yuan = 10 Jiao = 100 Fen1 EUR is equivalent to about 9 RMB, 1 US-Dollar is worth about 5.8 RMB.

International credit cards are not accepted everywhere in China. If you want to with-draw money at a cash point, you’ll find ATMs at some branches of the “Bank of China” and the “Industrial and Commercial Bank of China”. They accept established cards like VISA, MasterCard, Cirrus, Maestro, Plus, and AMEX. ATMs have transaction limits – usually 2,500 RMB – but this applies only to one withdrawal. For bigger amounts you can make multiple withdrawals of up to 50,000 RMB of total value (depending on the bank in question).

Money exchange can be done in large branches of the banks mentioned above, but only when you present your passport. You can also exchange money at the airport, large hotels and several department stores.

Sad but true: Counterfeit money is an issue in China. If you’re given large denomina-tion notes as change in the markets or by street vendors, double check them. The water mark, paper quality and a rough surface on Mao’s right are good points from which to decipher.

Transportation in Beijing By subway: It’s fast, reliable and beats traffic on the streets, though beware, it can get

very crowded during rush hour. A ticket to any station costs from 2-6 Yuan.By taxi: All Shanghai cabs are easily recognizable by the taxi sign on the roof and

the meter on the dashboard. Taxi colors vary on the company, yellow taxis are preferable and if you are lucky you will hail one of the 4000 assigned Expo taxis.

Cabs will sometimes try to scam you by taking a much longer route. This is easily avoided by pretending you know where to go. Or by keeping a Shanghai city map in your lap. The price of taxis during the day stars at 12 and 16 in the evening. Make sure you always take your receipt, in case you left something in the taxi and need to con-tact the driver. For long distance travels out of town, negotiate a fee.

Tip: If you don’t speak Chinese, bring a map with English and Chinese characters. It is essential when asking people for directions – even if they don’t understand a word of English.

French Concession Shopping Shopping with taste 法租界

“There’re numerous shops offering a wide range of shoes at reasonable prices. Most shops are located along the two-lane road between Nanjing Road W. and Huaihai Road M. A 20-minute walk can cover the whole section, but if you really, really adore shoes and bargaining it can take half a day!Besides shoes, you can find clothes, bags, accessories and jewelry suitable for all different age groups that won’t break the bank.”

The French Concession came into being in the mid-19th century, but most of the buildings that define the area today were built with European money in the 1920s-1940s. The style is an international one, blending European influence with Chinese living habits. The area is interesting because it is well-preserved, historic, but as yet only partly (re-) gentrified. You can see some fine examples of traditional architec-ture set in a bustling and thriving Chinese neighborhood, including ultra-functional Bauhaus, 1930s “Streamline” style and more classically influenced Deco styles. A mildly Bohemian atmosphere is attracting cafes, galleries and restaurants, making for plenty of interesting discoveries along the way. Something new seems to open up every week.
