Left. The pegging of the curves and the sole is completed.
Right. The construction required the fabrication of 1500 hexagonal pegs of 30mm diam. In order to smooth off the projecting part of the peg, the boat is tilted. Once in position the pegs are spread with cross punches so they are watertight and cannot be forced out.

Left: After some five hundred days‘ work, the scute is almost completed. In the foreground can be seen the sawing horse and its supports for use with a frame saw. Behind it lies a rudder with a triangular blade.
Right: A Loire Scute, launched 13th June 2010, in the presence of a number of Gauls, several Vikings, a detachment of Napolean‘s Old Garde (les Grognards – the grumblers) and a crowd of onlookers. Since then the Bishop of Tours has named her Dame Périnelle, the name of the lady benefactor of the poor of the parish. The final fitting out will be done while afloat, specifically those necessary for receiving passengers at the quayside to introduce them to the Loire in medieval times, of which the scute was an essential element.
