Eating right and staying fit are important no matter what your age. As we get older our bodies have different needs, so certain nutrients become especially important for good health.
Calcium and Vitamin DOlder adults need more calcium and vitamin D to help maintain bone health. Have three servings of vitamin D-fortified low-fat or fat-free milk or yogurt each day. Other calcium-rich foods include fortified cereals and fruit juices, dark green leafy vegetables and canned fish with soft bones. Check with your doctor about taking vitamin D, a calcium supplement, or a multivitamin.
Vitamin B12Many people older than 50 do not get enough vitamin B12. Fortified cereal, lean meat, and some fish & seafood are sources of vitamin B12. Ask your doctor if you need a vitamin B12 supplement.
FiberEat more fiber-rich foods to stay regular. Fiber also
can help lower your risk for heart disease, control your weight, and prevent Type 2 diabetes. Eat whole-grain breads & cereals, and more beans & peas — along with fruits & vegetables which also provide fiber.PotassiumIncreasing potassium along with reducing sodium (salt) may lower your risk of high blood pressure. Fruits, vegetables and low-fat or fat-free milk & yogurt are good sources of potassium. Also, select and prepare foods with little or no added salt.
Know Your FatsFoods that are low in saturated fats and trans-fat help reduce your risk of heart disease. Most of the fats you eat should be polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Check the Nutrition Facts panel on food labels for total fat and saturated fat.

Lian has been working in Montereau’s Food & Beverage department since she heard about the job from a friend in high school. She loves building relationships with the residents and staff. She says working at Montereau is more than “simply going through the motions of work, but truly serving the residents with compassion.” She says of her relationship with the residents, “We are on a journey with them in this season of their lives and I am so honored to get to be a part of that.” Another favorite part of her job is seeing how well the Food &
Beverage staff work together as a team. She says that being a part of the staff ’s lives and mentoring them brings her joy. Lian moved to the United
States at the age of nine from a small village in Myanmar (Burma) called Tedim. Her family consists of her parents, one sister, and three brothers. Lian is currently a junior at Oklahoma State University and is majoring in Business Management. She says that she and her siblings will be the first in her family to graduate from college. Lian has been living her life to the fullest as long as she can remember with no plans to stop. She says, “My overarching goals in life are to be happy, enjoy life, live boldly, love endlessly, and be a Good Samaritan to everyone I possibly can.”

With a Tornado Drill scheduled for March 14, this is a perfect time to review what you should do in the event of a real tornado warning. If a tornado warning is issued in our area, you will receive a Weathercall notification by telephone. Montereau will also sound the voice activation system in the hallways of each wing in the Towers. The message will not sound in your apartment. You should evacuate to the underground parking garage for safety. The elevators to the underground parking garage are located on the Northwest and Northeast wings of the apartment building. You are encouraged to use the stairwell located on the Northeast wing to access the underground parking garage if you are able. If you are unable to evacuate to underground parking, it is recommended that you go to the first floor interior away from windows. If you have pets, you are welcome to bring them with you during a tornado
warning. You are also encouraged to purchase a weather alert radio that will notify you of an impending storm or tornado warning. We also recommend that you take a flashlight or battery-operated lantern and bottled water with you to the underground parking garage. This is also a great time to make sure you have your emergency kit ready (flashlight, batteries, water, snacks, etc.).

It gives curry and mustard their color, and can have some powerful effects on your health. Turmeric, the bright yellow spice often found in curry powder, is linked to improved cardiovascular health, cancer prevention and protection against Alzheimer’s. Researchers believe that curcumin, a compound in turmeric, may help prevent oxidation of cholesterol in the body. This could help to reduce the progression of atherosclerosis and diabetic heart disease. Turmeric is also high in vitamin B6, which helps to protect blood vessel walls from damage. Curcumin has powerful antioxidant properties that may make it useful in preventing cancer. Scientists say that it is particularly helpful for protecting colon cells from free radicals that can damage cellular DNA. Also, studies have linked turmeric to lower rates of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer. Research suggests that it can even slow the spread of existing cancer cells. Another potential benefit of curcumin for cancer treatment is its impact on chemotherapy. Researchers at UCLA found that curcumin enhances the effects of a specific type of chemotherapy used to treat several types of cancer. A study showed that the two together worked better at suppressing tumors than the chemotherapy drug alone. A different study showed that curcumin made cancer cells more susceptible to chemotherapy while protecting healthy cells. Growing evidence suggests that turmeric may provide protection against neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. Studies show very low numbers of these diseases in India, where turmeric is a regular part of the diet. At the same time, researcher found that curcumin does appear to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s in mice. Scientists aren’t quite sure why yet and research is ongoing. Turmeric and curry powder go well with eggs, beans, veggies and sprinkled into soups. Ask your server for the spice rack to give them a try. Add some black pepper while you’re at it. Research has found that consuming black pepper with curcumin increases your body’s ability to absorb the nutrients.
