Or, if you dont have a Valentines Day date, it doesnt matter ~ come on your own for many will gather with you, or better, yet, invite a loved one or a friend or a new acquaintance! Either way ~ just be sure and attend. Get up now and grab a bright red pen to make another mark on your calendar under that date of February 14th! Valentines Day this year is about to take on a whole new meaning and you will not want to miss it. For Valentines Day this year will abound in deep, all-inclusive love, and you dont need to be married or engaged or even have a significant other in order to experience this amazing love! Valentines Day is not just for sweethearts and romance and candy and flowers this year. Valentines Day 2018 will be rooted in an even deeper, more fully inclusive love ~ the love of God for all people, whoever you are, and wherever life finds you! What do I mean? I mean that Valentines Day this year shares its traditional February 14 th date with Ash Wednesday. Isnt that an incredible twist on the calendar and in our lives? On a day when some people tend to lament that they have no one to share love with on Valentines Day (this year, in 2018, finally, because of this calendar connection), they (and all of us), will get to share the deepest and most abiding love with the One that loves us as no one else can or will ever do! All people (and yes, I mean all people), will get to share love this year on Valentines Day ~ perfect love with God. I can say that with all certainty because Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent on the church calendar. And on Ash Wednesday, the gift of ashes is placed upon our foreheads in the shape of a cross with the words, Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return. And in that pronouncement, we are made vividly aware of our death. I know, I know you are wondering to yourself just how in the world that is a good thing. Yet, it is. For that empty cross reminds us that death is definitely not the end. In the Ash Wednesday pronouncement, we are made aware of our finitude, but we are also made vividly aware of our eternal life, because of Gods great love for each and every one of us, Gods beloved children. When God sent Jesus, God did not send Jesus to die ~ God sent Jesus to love and to live forevermore! = PASTOR’S MESSAGE CONTINUED

WINTER CONGREGATION MEETING The annual Winter Congregation Meeting will be on Sunday, February 11 at 11:30 AM, immediately following the 10:30 service. Items of business will include the presentation of the 2017 Annual Report, voting on the 2018 budget, and voting for 2018 spring Rocky Mountain Synod Assembly delegates.. Please plan to join us for the meeting!

Ministry Meetings Atonement’s Outreach ministry team connects Atonement to community support projects, such as those created by Community Ministry, Lutheran Family Services, and other organizations. We always welcome new ideas and people to participate in our team. Our next meeting is on Thursday, February 8 at 6:30 PM in the café. We encourage you to join us! We will be planning for a fundraising event in May. Keep an eye out for information about details on this great event! Habitat for Humanity The Miracle Workers have had a successful year in supplying personnel and raising funds for the 2017 College View build. Fundraising highlights of the past year were the contribution of Lenten service offerings and the donations given at our Miracle Workers pancake breakfast. A number of volunteers also served as workers at the build site and various fund-raising activities. Thanks to all our congregation members who helped in placing a very deserving family into their new home. Plans will soon be made for a 2018 build, so keep watching the narthex bulletin board and monthly newsletters as we approach another year as Miracle Workers for Habitat for Humanity. Grocery Cart Remember that the need for food donations is year round. Soles for Souls continues to be very successful, so please bring your old shoes. Don’t forget: they take anything - one shoe, two shoes, dress shoes, work shoes, kid’s shoes, worn out shoes - anything!

4 STEWARDSHIP

STEWARDSHIP SNIPPETS

Although Jesus talks about money a lot, he never talks about the need of the church to receive. Jesus always talks about the need of the giver to give. This is the Bible's stewardship message. We who gather in Jesus' name would do well to follow our Lord's lead.

We have an update to our “Estimate of Giving” results: This year we received 63 cards. Their total annual giving estimate is $199,996.00, which equals weekly giving of $3846.00. Last year our estimate of weekly giving was $2480.00 from 94 cards, so while we had fewer cards this year, the monthly giving has increased by 55% over last year. A SINCERE THANK YOU TO ALL WHO TURNED IN CARDS! If you would like to fill out an “Estimate of Giving” card, they are available on the table in the back of our sanctuary, and you can drop them in the offering plate or turn them in to the office.

On Sunday, January 14, Shelly Mercer and I represented your Stewardship team by attending a Thrivent financial planning event at Holy Shepard Lutheran church. We were excited to learn that Thrivent members are awarded choice dollars every year. Those choice dollars can be given to any 501 C3 charity of the members choice. We have 30-40 members at Atonement who simply need to notify Thrivent by March 30 they would like Atonement to receive their choice dollars and Thrivent then donates them to our congregation.

At Holy Shepard Thrivent donated 2400 choice dollars in 2016, and in 2017 it was over 5000 once members were made aware they needed to do this. Thrivent is a non-profit and if members don’t notify them, they give the money to another charity. Even if you do not designate Atonement for your choice dollars, please notify Thrivent of which charity you would like to benefit. To notify Thrivent of your choice dollar wishes, before March 30, call 800-847-4836 and when prompted say “Thrivent Choice.” Press 1 to direct Choice Dollars, or 2 to hear Thrivent Choice Program Terms and Conditions. (if prompted, say or enter your phone number and date of birth.) A representative will work with you to direct your Choice Dollars. We learned about many other ways we can ask Thrivent to assist with charitable activities we would like seed money with which to get started. Your Stewardship team will discuss all the results of that meeting at our January 17th meeting and begin formulating ideas for mission projects that could use seed funds. Last year Holy Shepard was awarded 22 Thrivent grants for projects to support community service projects. God’s Peace, Carol Farr for your Stewardship team

The next meeting of Atonement’s Senior Lunch Bunch will be on Wednes-day, February 7 at 11:30 AM at the Red Lobster at 5656 S. Wadsworth Blvd. in Littleton. If you would like to attend, please sign up on the sheet in the narthex, or call the church office at 303-985-1122, so that we are able to make a reservation. Because of space at the restaurant, we are limited to 20 people attending the event. Please join us! Please contact Marcia Wagner with any questions.

SENIOR LUNCH BUNCH

5 CAREGIVING MINISTRY TEAM Rides

If you are in need of a ride to the doctor’s office, grocery store, or a hair cut, we can help you out. We have some church members who have volunteered to help you. If you would like a ride, please call the church office at 303-985-1122.

The Agape Group

By now, many of you have a good idea of what a family caregiver is about. Chances are you have been one or will be, have needed one, or have known a caregiver. The Agape Caregivers Support Group was started to give support for those people that are caregivers. We meet once a month on the last Saturday of the month in the café from 10:30 until 12, 12:30 or 1:00 PM. We spend time each meeting sharing how the month has been. Many members have gone through similar times so it is a help to others to hear stories and others’ experiences. Some of our caregivers have lost their loved one and are now going through the grief process. We do a lot of sharing—supporting—encouraging—laughing and crying as well. We are always glad for a new member. Come join us. If you have any questions, please call Bev Karika at 303-986-6794, or Ruth Zartman at 303-921-2123.

Recreation Center Access for Seniors

A new program for older adults who live in Denver, MY Denver PRIME, provides Denver residents ages 60+ with free access to all the city’s recreation centers and pools, including more than 200 weekly drop-in fitness classes and clubs. If you live in Denver and are 60 or older, you can sign up for a MY Denver PRIME membership by bringing a photo ID and proof of your Denver residency to the front desk at any Denver Recreation Center. Documents that can be used to prove residency include a driver’s license or identification card, public service bill, lease agreement, or vehicle registration.

ADULT EDUCATION In February we return to our book series, Together by Grace: Introducing the Lutherans with "Faith Active in Love" (pages 113-146 in Together by Grace) and "Being Lutheran Together in a Wider World" (pages 147-174). Please read ahead if you have the book. On February 18th we're excited for a special presentation by our very own Liz Kelpis on "Rebuilding Hope after Disaster." Liz works for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Emergency Support Function 11, and her job is tasked with feeding people and animals following a natural disaster. She has helped and ministered to people after recent storms. What a calling! Finally, on February 25 the Faith In Action ministry will host several guests who will share information about American history as it pertains to the subject of white privilege. There is a handout to pick up in the narthex to read and bring for discussion.

Our congregational meeting is this month and I'm unable to attend (Gayle). I invite and urge you to think about Adult Ed along with all Atonement ministries. All ministries take energy and time to sustain; there are ministries like ours that have had the same worker bees for some years and some ministries are no longer meeting or in operation. We need to turn this around. We would like to bring a new leader and/or new people in for Adult Ed with fresh ideas and energy. Might you be one who'd like to see Adult Ed programming continue? It's hard but rewarding work; it's a time commitment with deadlines but it's also energizing. I hope someone may feel a new calling to join, commit and lead!

Lastly, our team is not planning for Atonement University (AU) for this summer. AU would be a great short term commitment for someone(s) to take on. Please see myself or any of the team if you're interested in being the Vice President of Academic Affairs for Atonement University! Adult Ed team members are Jacque Bland, Carol Farr, Siv Feierabend, Gayle Gunderson and John Pope.

6 FAITH IN ACTION February Meeting

FIA will meet at Pal and Cathy Bajcsi’s house on Feb. 2, 2018, 6:00, a Pot-Luck. We will watch the movie, “13th.” If you would like to attend, call Cathy so that we will plan for more people. Please feel welcome to join us!

3. Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” by Peggy McIntosh Copies of this article are available for interested parties to take home. We hope that you can come to the Adult Ed sessions that FIA is sponsoring to learn about the complex subject of White Privilege.

Adult Education on February 25 Guests, Holly Fulton and her husband, Bill Peebles, will share some interesting facts about American history as it pertains to the subject of White Privilege, since February is Black History Month. Please come to learn along with us!

FIA Picks: Books:

“Sing Unburied Sing” and “Salvage the Bones” by Jesmyn Ward, twice winner of the National Book Award. She writes of race, violence and Katrina...Mississippi is her home.

Read On-Line: Boston Globe Series on Race is now available without a subscription. The

link is: http://apps.bostonglobe.com/spotlight/boston-racism-image-reality/ The Globe Spotlight Team examined the core of Boston’s identity: renowned colleges and world-class medical institutions, business and politics, and championship sports teams. To get a sense of how much black residents are part of the mainstream of the city, the reporters did something decidedly old-school: They visited a number of iconic Boston places and simply counted the number of black people they saw. All told, the findings were troubling. The reasons are complex. In Boston, racism certainly is not as loud and violent as it once was, and the city overall is a more tolerant place. But inequities of wealth and power persist, and racist attitudes remain powerful, even if in more subtle forms.

FAITH IN ACTION PICKS (CONTINUED) Movies:

“The Intouchables” is an "irreverent, uplifting comedy about friendship, Trust, and human possibility...Based on a true story of friendship between a handicap millionaire (Francois Cluzet) and his street smart ex-con caretaker (Omar Sy), The Intouchables depicts an unlikely camaraderie rooted in honesty and humor between two individuals who, on the surface, would seem to have nothing in common. -- (C) Weinstein" (from Rotten Tomatoes).

Events:

“Detroit 67” at the Curious Theater

What Happened in Detroit in 1967?

What happened in Detroit in July of 1967? Living in my mostly white suburb next to Detroit’s west side, I would say that is when the Race Riots erupted in Detroit. I was a High School student, safely watching the looting and fires on the TV news, so glad that I was not there around 12th Street where the riots started. As a white teenager, NOT living in that neighborhood, I thought “why are ‘they’ so angry?” I could not understand.

Detroit’s police, known for their racism, had raided a party in an after-hours illegal club, or “blind pig.” As they “dragged people out of the building, a crowd grew.” Bottles were thrown…” a skirmish broke out. The violence lasted 5 days, left 43 dead, injured another 342, destroyed some 1,400 buildings, and drew 700 troops to the city.” (Detroit ’67 program, Curious Theater).

I went to the Charles Wright African American Museum last month when I went home to the Detroit area for the Christmas holidays. What I had called the Race Riots, I learned that the black community refers to this same event as “the Detroit Rebellion” or “The Uprising of 1967.” And last year was the 50th anniversary of this event. My husband Bernie stated, “It’s hard to understand life as a minority unless you have lived and experienced it.” He knows.

This play takes place in the basement of a black brother and sister’s home, close to where the Riots will start. They operate a “blind pig.” The brother brings home a mysterious, unconscious white woman, found on a nearby road. The tension begins.

Go see Curious Theater’s current production of Detroit ’67, written by a Detroit playwright, Dominique Morrisseau. It is playing until Feb. 24 at the Curious Theater at 1080 Acoma. The Box Office phone number is 303-623-0524. Then you will have some insight into what happened in Detroit that hot July summer of 1967. Was it a Race Riot…. a Rebellion…or an Uprising? We encourage you to see this play, and attend Faith In Action’s upcoming discussions on White Privilege, beginning on January 28.

FOOT CARE CLINIC The Wellness Foot Care Clinic is Thursday, February 8 from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM. To schedule an appointment or to volunteer your help, please call the Visiting Nurse Association at 303-698-6496.

Theater and Theology is a long-running program of the Rocky Mountain Synod, which has an arrangement with The Denver Theatre Company of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts to see each of its productions at a reduced ticket price. After each performance, there is a talk-back with the cast, moderated by Pastor Dan Bollman.

The Theater & Theology performance in March is The Great Leap, at the Ricketson Theatre on Tuesday, March 6 at 6:30 PM. The description of the play is as follows: “When an American college basketball team travels to Beijing for an exhibition game in 1989, the drama on the court goes deeper than the strain between their countries. Tensions rise right up to the final buzzer as history collides with the action in the stadium. “

If you are interested in attending the performance, please sign up on the sheet in the narthex. Tickets cost $35. Checks made out to the Rocky Mountain Synod are due to Jean Marshall, Theresa Henninger, or to the office by the Tuesday, February 13. For questions, call Jean Marshall at 303-989-4166 or Theresa Henninger at 303-973-2490.

All are welcome to help or if you just want to visit, you are welcome to do so as we work. Meals will be available on Sunday, February 25. SCOUT SUNDAY Atonement is happy to be the chartering organization for Boy Scout Troop 808, which meets in the church each Thursday. Troop 808 is fully owned by Atonement Lutheran Church, and is a youth ministry of the church. Troop 808 and Atonement invite you to join us for Scout Sunday on Sunday, February 4. On this day, the troop will be serving a continental breakfast for everyone between services from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM. Scouts from the troop will also be participating in services on Scout Sunday. Please join us for the breakfast and to meet some of the Scouts! In addition to the continental breakfast, Atonement has offered to assist the troop with supplies. Due to thefts endured from the troop’s trailer and sheds, we would like to support the troop by having a replenishing tree. This tree is similar to the Angel Tree, and will be set up in the narthex. Please pick up a tag with an item and return it to the church to donate to the troop. These items can be used items that you no longer use, and do not necessarily need to be purchased as new. Please help us support the troop, and please join us for Scout Sunday!

HANNAH CIRCLE Atonement’s Hannah Circle women’s Bible study group will continue our monthly meetings in February.

Please join us on the third Tuesday, February 20, from 1-3 PM in the narthex. The title of the study is “Multiple Meanings,” from the Gather magazine. Please remember that the study from the magazine is for January and February.

We always welcome any newcomers or guests. It’s a great time to study and socialize a bit.

Do you have an interest in being a Worship Volunteer Usher? If so, we’d love to hear from you! We have dedicated usher teams at both 8:00 and 10:30 services, but we need to rebuild our strength in numbers. Training is provided, and we work hard to accommodate your schedules. Ushers are rotated, so if the numbers are strong, you only have to serve once every month or two. If you prefer the 8:00 service, just sign the sheet on the table in the narthex and contact Jean Viste (303-904-1828) to let her know so she can direct you the first time. If you usually attend the 10:30 service, please express your interest to Janis Eldredge, after a service or by calling (970-333-9862) or emailing ([email protected]). We would love to have you on our Usher Teams, and your assistance will be greatly appreciated by the entire congregation!

Thank you!

USHERS NEEDED FOR BOTH SERVICES

POINSETTIAS, LILIES, AND ALTAR FLOWERS We want to thank everyone who helps beautify our sanctuary during the holiday seasons by sponsoring a poinsettia at Christmas or a lily at Easter. We don't usually purchase as many plants as sponsors as we have found some people do not want to take the plant home and we end up throwing them away. The extra money collected from poinsettias and lilies is very helpful as it is used to cover the expense of altar flowers that are not sponsored during the year. We also want to thank Mary Alice and Tom McDougal and Gretchen Fouts who take turns picking altar flowers up from King Soopers and delivering them to the church every week.

FLOWERS

The intergenerational Mardi Gras celebration announced in the January newsletter for February 10 has been cancelled. Sunday School will continue each Sunday at 10:00 AM in the basement. Thank you to everyone who teaches at Sunday School and to all the families who participate!

Atonement’s Reformation Journey group will meet on Tuesday, February 27 at 7:00 PM in the education room. We will be discussing John Spong’s Biblical Literacy: A Gentile Heresy. All are welcome to join us for the meeting and discussion! A description of the book follows below from the Amazon page:

“A man who has consciously and deliberately walked the path of Christ, John Shelby Spong has lived his entire life inside the Christian Church. In this profound and considered work, he offers a radical new way to look at the gospels today as he shows just how deeply Jewish the Christian Gospels are and how much they reflect the Jewish scriptures, history, and patterns of worship.

Using the Gospel of Matthew as a guide, Spong explores the Bible’s literary and liturgical roots—its grounding in Jewish culture, symbols, icons, and storytelling tradition—to explain how the events of Jesus’ life, including the virgin birth, the miracles, the details of the passion story, and the resurrection and ascension, would have been understood by both the Jewish authors of the various gospels and by the Jewish audiences for which they were originally written. Spong makes clear that it was only after the church became fully Gentile that readers of the Gospels took these stories to be factual, distorting their original meaning.“

REFORMATION JOURNEY

Join Saint Peter Lutheran Church for “Holden Evening Prayer Around the World” on Wednesday, February 7 at 7:00 PM.

Holden Village, a popular Lutheran retreat center located far back in the Cascadia Mountains of Washington State (holdenvillage.org), is promoting Holden Evening Prayer Around the World (HEPAW). A favorite liturgy in many Lutheran congregations, Holden Evening Prayer was composed by Marty Haugen in 1985-86, during a musical residency at Holden Village.

Congregations and other faith organizations will be gathering for evening prayer on Wednesday, February 7. Saint Peter is currently the only congregation in Colorado planning to host this event, and is located at 9300 E. Belleview Ave. in Greenwood Village. The 7:00 PM worship service will be followed by a time of theological conversation (with refreshments provided).

All who are interested are invited to join us for this evening of worship and conversation. For more information, visit www.stplc.org.
