Soroptimist International
of Greater Bremerton Area
I hope you all had a fantastic summer. I’m so excited about our upcoming club year. Our theme is “Live Our Soroptimist Dream” and it is a call to action. The theme invites us all to think of our dreams for our club and to share these dreams with each other. By sharing, we can identify our common dreams for our club that we can work on together. The theme also encourages our members to act upon these dreams. There are many ways to take action, such as attending club meetings; organizing and attending club events; participating in club committees; and getting “Soroptimized” at area, district, and regional events. In what ways will you choose this year? Thank you for contributing your valuable time and talents. You all make this club the dynamic force of nature that does amazing things for our community. Sincerely,
President Jessica
A Message From President Jessica
September 2012
We are extremely pleased to announce that we
were just awarded a $1,300.00 grant from the
Northwest Coalition Against Trafficking
(NWCAT) for our Anti-Human Trafficking
Initiative here in Kitsap County. The grant funds
will go a long way as we continue our club’s
efforts to educate and raise community
awareness about human trafficking in our
County and the State of Washington.
In 2010, we formed a task force and began
developing an “ever-changing” two-year work plan. And even though we were
working with very limited resources, we we able to accomplish a great deal. Now that
our work plan is complete and we have been awarded this grant, we are kicking it
into high gear. This year, we will, once again, collaborate on “BreakFree Kitsap”. We
will also sponsor informational forums and continue to raise awareness by
distributing rack cards, flyers, brochures and pamphlets at collaborative events. If you
are interested in volunteering or being a member of our task force, please contact
Pat Degracia at [email protected].

Patricia Ann Beatty Caldwell
Pat Caldwell received her
angel wings on
August 27, 2012.
She was born on March 17, 1927 to Leo and Katherine Kirwan in Peoria, IL, where she was raised and educated.
In 1949, she relocated to Japan to work at the American School, where she met and later married her husband, Vern M. Beatty. They settled in Bremerton to raise their family.
Pat was a Civil Service employee with the Department of Defense and, notably, was the first female EEO officer at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. She retired in April, 1987.
Pat was instrumental in the publishing of the book "Nipsic to Nimitz.", a Centennial History of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, and a member of the Centennial Book Committee. She was a member of Bremerton Garden Club, Naval Undersea Warfare Keyport Museum, Puget Sound Navy Museum and many other community organizations.
Most of us, however, know and remember Pat as a long-time mem-ber of Soroptimist International of Greater Bremerton Area and for her many years of service and commitment to our club and its projects. She joined our club in February, 1974 and has been an active mem-ber since. During the club year that ended in 2011, she co-chaired our mission-in-service projects committee. Her daughter, Mary, said Pat had only great things to say about Soroptimist.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Morin (Martin), Ann Iverson; granddaughters Lynn Giannotti (Scott Metzger), Amy Alexander (Brad) and great-grandchildren, Kyle, Sydney and Tucker; sister, Kathryn Hamilton of West Monroe, LA and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Vern M. Beatty and William Floyd Caldwell; sister Dorothy VonTobel and brother, William Kirwan.
Services were held on Saturday, September 1 at Our Lady of Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Club members were on hand to perform the Soroptimist Yellow Rose Ceremony in her memory.
The family requests all memorial donations be made to Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School.

Making a Difference Founded in 1921, Soroptimist is an international organiza-
tion for business and professional women who provide vol-
unteer service to their communities. Almost 100,000 Sorop-
timists in about 120 countries and territories contribute time
and financial support to community-based and international
projects benefiting women and girls.
Soroptimist International of Greater Bremerton Area was
chartered by the Soroptimist International of Seattle and
Soroptimist International of Tacoma on June 1, 1944 as an
organization of business and professional women working
to improve the lives of women and girls in the Bremerton
and Central Kitsap communities. There were 26 charter
members.
Soroptimist International of Greater Bremerton Area be-
came the 185th Club in the American Federation and the
25th Club in the Northwest Region. A special dinner com-
memorating the club's charter and installation of its first offi-
cers was held June 30, 1944 at Raus Chicken Dinner Inn in
Downtown Bremerton.
The name, Soroptimist, means "best for women," and that's
what the organization strives to achieve. Soroptimists are
women at their best working to help other women to be their
best.
