Called by the Spirit, Embracing the World. March 13, 2012 “Light has come into the world and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For whoever does wrong hates the light and doesn’t come to the light for fear that his deeds will be shown as evil. But whoever lives according to the truth comes into the light so that it can be clearly seen that his works have been done in God.” John 3:19-21 Dear Friends, The above passage is from the gospel reading for the Fourth Sunday of Lent. It is preceded by Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus about spiritual rebirth, and the generosity of God who sent His only Son to give us new life. How appropriate it is for us to reflect on the meaning of our spiritual rebirth and light in the midst of our Lenten practices. We are reminded again that change of our life is necessary to enter the light that has come into our midst. We are encouraged to re-arrange our lives in such a way that they will lead us on the way of truth and light. When I reflect on this passage it scares me even to think about loving darkness especially when I stay in unknown places. At the same time darkness in many ways helps us to hide ourselves or things before others. In that sense I can easily relate to the people Jesus talks about in the gospel. I intend to hide things that sometimes shame me and I do not want others to know about. Sometimes I even hide my gifts because I do not want to be bothered to develop them to the full potential. I am afraid that when I share them I will have less for myself. Oftentimes I just want to be left alone. There are many more things that people hide to get by in life. There are also various reasons for hiding. What do you hide in the darkness? What is the reason to hide those things? Preparing for the Easter celebration that emphasizes the light think of the ways that will help you to renew yourself and give birth to the new spiritual self. Think also of your experience of God’s love and how it has led you to a deeper faith experience. This is one of the steps on our spiritual journey that we undertake. May your Lenten journey of the coming few weeks be directed toward the light.
