THE CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHY OF MUSIC

Aesthetics is an integral part of life. God Himself wants to be glorified through both artistic and musical expression. However, integrating the Bible with the school’s music curriculum goes deeper than merely quoting Bible verses which refer to music. It involves finding the musical facts and principles, which are taught in the Bible, and incorporating them into the teaching process. They are then relevant to the subject at hand, thereby consolidating truth gained from the Bible study and from observations by man. All truth is God’s truth. Students must be trained to carefully and objectively study God’s word. While the Bible is not a music book, it does touch on areas of music. Helping our students to think critically and constructively from a Bible-based Christian world view should be a major concern. We must always remember that the major scriptural function of music is for the praise and worship of God. Students and teachers must be engaged in both the study of music and the study of the Bible for this kind of integration to take place. Christian schoolteachers need to search for ways to involve pupils in learning music from Biblical world and life view. It is our prayer that the instruction preceding it, as well as the actual music festival will reflect the efforts of the teacher. OBJECTIVES 1. To exalt our Lord Jesus Christ in the use of musical talent.

1. To encourage students to share in the ministry of music for the glorification of God in and beyond the classroom. 2. To provide an opportunity for Christian school students to benefit from the evaluation of a qualified adjudicator and distinguished guest conductors.

3. To provide opportunities for fellowship with students from other Christian schools with a similar interest.

3

FESTIVAL INFORMATION

The Student Activities School Registration Form is available for all member schools early in the school year. The form and appropriate fee must be returned to the ACSI regional office by the stated deadline. The registration fee covers the cost of handbooks and office related expenses of the Music Festival. This fee is non-refundable. Checks should be made payable to ACSI.

PARTICIPATION FORMS

Participation Forms will be made available from ACSI for registered schools for the purpose of signing up each student and/or group of musicians. Use only the Participation Forms provided by ACSI. The number of school entries is not limited, but there are limitations on the number of performances per student as previously stated. Use a separate form for each entry. It is the responsibility of the music director to mail the forms so they are received by the stated deadline. Late forms may be subject to a penalty fee upon the discretion of the Regional Student Activity Coordinator. PARTICIPATION FEES Refer to the ACSI Festival Information Sheet that was sent you by email from the Regional Office. This fee is non-refundable. No personal checks please. It is the responsibility of the Music Director to see that all forms and fees are mailed to the appropriate person by the designated deadline. This date will correspond with the 5-week deadline. INSURANCE All schools participating in an event with the Association of Christian Schools International are required to have adequate insurance coverage for students and sponsors/teachers. ACSI does not assume responsibility for this coverage. The school’s student accident insurance should cover most reasonable and customary medical expenses. Worker’s Compensation should cover sponsors and teachers. CATEGORIES OF PARTICIPATION The Event Chairperson will provide adjudication in the areas listed below. It will be left to the event chairpersons’ discretion as to which areas of adjudication are necessary.

a. Choir (13 or more) b. Ensemble (5-12) c. Small Ensemble (Quartet, trio, duet) d. Solo

Please note that the Elementary Festival will only include choirs and ensembles.

STUDENT ENTRIES 1. The ACSI Music Adjudication events are open to students in grades three through

twelve (3-12), unless otherwise stipulated by the ACSI Regional Office. Students may enter the festival in the following grade levels: Elementary – Grades 3-8 Middle School/High School – Grades 6-12 A combination of grade levels is also permissible.

2. All music will be judged individually and on a non-competitive basis by a competent adjudicator. There will be two (2) or three (3) judges for Choirs. One person will judge all other events.

3. Use only the Participation Forms provided by ACSI. The number of school entries is not limited,

but there are limitations on the number of performances per student. Each student is limited to a maximum of three (3) performances. Of these, only two (2) may be in the soloist/small ensemble category. Each student entered in the small ensemble, and solo categories are required to be a member of either the choir or large ensemble at his/her school.

4. Ensembles of 5-12 participants may enter as a choir when that school’s choral program

consists of twelve (12) or fewer members. They will be counted as a choir and will be responsible for following all choir rules (one required piece and one director’s choice), pay the choir fee, and use the choir participation form.

4. Each accompanist is limited to five (5)-scheduled performances. This includes the choir and

large ensembles.

5. It is the music director’s responsibility to notify the chairman before the deadline if an entry is withdrawing from the music event. Upon arrival at the festival site, the music director must report any last minute withdrawals.

FEES / DEADLINES 1. There will be a participation fee for each event. The ACSI Florida regional office will determine

this fee.

2. Send the Fee Assessment Form and one school check for participation fees to the Florida Regional Office. The Student Participation Form AND Adjudication Form are sent to the event chairperson. All forms and fees must be submitted by the designated deadline.

There are no refunds of the school’s registration fee or participation fee.

5

FESTIVAL MUSIC 1. Each choir will perform two (2) numbers consecutively, one required number and one choice piece.

The choice piece must be challenging and appropriate music, acceptable to Christian standards. 2. All aspects of music selected must be acceptable to Christian standards as they relate to

lyrics, rhythm, etc. Popular, rock, contemporary Christian, country, jazz, and show tunes are not acceptable. While some of these categories may be acceptable in certain situations, the purpose of this event is to encourage and promote quality academic choral literature.

3. Copied music will not be accepted, unless the music folder includes a copy of a letter of

permission, on letterhead stationery, from the copyright holder.

CHOIR ADJUDICATION 1. All participating schools must enter in the choir adjudication. 2. Each choir will prepare two selections…one from the required list and one chosen by the director. 3. Each director will provide for each of the three adjudicators:

• Three (3) original copies of each piece with measures numbered in order of performance to be given to each judge at the time of performance.

• Three (3) copies of the Adjudication Form with the top portion completed to be sent to the Chairperson with the Participation Forms.

REMINDER: THE ADJUDICATION FORMS AND PARTICIPATION FORMS SHOULD BE SENT

TO THE CHAIRPERSON, NOT TO THE ACSI OFFICE. 4. All vocal music must be memorized. 5. Recorded background accompaniment is NOT permitted. Amplified instruments are NOT permitted. All accompaniments are to be done with piano. 6. Each group will be timed from the time the director or the first performer steps into the performance area. 6. The following time limits will be observed: Elementary 15 – 20 minutes Middle/Junior High 15 minutes Senior High 20 minutes

6

7. Each director will submit a 3 x 5 card listing the following information: a. Name of School

school. Small and large ensembles are required to sing one selection for adjudication. 2. One Participation Form and one adjudication form for the category must be completed and sent to the chairperson in advance. 3. Ensembles and soloists will perform one selection unless the Ensemble is performing as a choir.

If the Ensemble is performing as a choir they must sing two numbers: one from the required list and one director’s choice. Reminder: An ensemble can perform as a choir if the number in this group represent a small school with limited number of students (12 or less) in the choral program. They will be judged by 3 adjudicators, and expected to pay the CHOIR PARTICIPATION FEE.

4. All selections must be memorized. 5. Published copies of each selection must be provided for the adjudicator. Accompanists must

also use original music scores. Photocopies will not be accepted. 6. Musical selections for the ensemble division should be appropriate for adjudication. Although

DRESS CODE Please adhere to the host school’s dress code. It is important that we respect the host school’s standards in every area. RULES OF CONDUCT 1. All directors are responsible for the conduct of their students both on and off the festival site. 2. Directors should brief all students and chaperones on the rules specified by each Music Festival Chairperson. 3. General rules applied are:

a. Students are not permitted to enter rooms or buildings not designated for festival use. b. Reasonable quiet should be maintained at all times around the festival site so as not to

disturb or interfere with others as they are performing. c. Radios, tape recorders, and portable music sources are not allowed on site. d. No one is to enter or leave an adjudication room while a performance is in progress. “In
