    How to Use This Book

    This book is one of a series of illustrated classroom wordlists in languages spoken by newarrivals in Sheffield. It is targeted at children who are newly arrived in the U.K and are beginningto learn English. It can also be used with children who have little or no literacy to help themdevelop reading and writing skills in the language.

    The book can be used in different ways:

    To label pictures and classroom objects;

    To match pictures to names. Sets of cards can be made without names orillustrations, which can then be matched by the pupil;

    To make games such as pelmanism, word bingo and snap;

    To help pupils construct simple sentences;

    To take home to copy, read and learn words as an early homework task forchildren who are beginning to learn English;

    Parents and carers can be encouraged to help their children with suchtasks;

    To help pupils develop literacy in the language;

    To help pupils communicate with teachers.

    Explanation

    In the Romany language there are lots of words missing, either because they havent beenmade or because the original words have been forgotten. In regards to words related toeducation; in the Romany culture education isnt highly valued therefore lots of words are non-existent. Therefore they simply use the vocabulary of the country they are living in i.e. Slovakia.

    In most instances they loan the word and change/evolve it making it fit into their Romanylanguage e.g. Sveder (Slovak for Jumper) becomes Svederis and l (Scarf) becomeslos. I have given indicated in this document which words are Slovakian and which areRomany; although most of the Romany words are original some are of Slovakian origin.

    SK = Slovakian (Possibly slightly changed) RM = Original Romany (Possibly some words takenfrom Slovakian, but have being changed so much and are now unrecognisable to nativeSlovakians. A few of the words are different in other Slovakian-Romany dialects.)

    Pronounciation

    The pronounciations of the slavic letters (E.g. , , etc) are the same as in Slovakian, butare also a few addtions to the alphabet:Kh is pronounced as a K with a very slight h after it (almost like a short breath of air) as isPh (Ph is not like in English making an F sound), Th and h (but is like the EnglishCh then it is followed with a very slight h).
