IntroductionThis guide describes the installation process for the EMC® VNX7500™ Unified system.

 Audience

Although your VNX system is customer installable, EMC recommends that the installation be

performed by someone who has a general background in information technology. While prior 

training is not required, customers who successfully installed this product were trained as either:

◆ EMC Proven Professionals

◆ Microsoft Certified Technology Specialists

◆ Cisco Certified Network Associates

◆ CompTIA A+ certified technicians

 Your service provider offers a variety of installation and implementation services designed to

assist you in installing and setting up your VNX system into a production environment as quicklyand efficiently as possible. Contact your sales representative to take advantage of these service

offerings.

Overview: Installing in an EMC cabinet

If your system was shipped in an EMC cabinet:

1. Read and complete the prerequisite tasks as described in “Before you begin checklist” on

page 7. These tasks include:

a. Creating a Product Support account

b. Downloading the VNX7500 Hardware Information Guide 

c. Completing the VNX Unified worksheets

d. Reviewing the resource requirements needed for your system

2. Unpack the shipping boxes and verify the shipping contents by using the packing instructions

on the outside of the box as described in “Unpacking the shipping boxes” on page 9.

3. Verify cabling, including the power up cables as described in “Cable your system” on page 33.

4. Power up your system and verifying that the system powered up correctly by checking the LEDs

of the Control Stations, blade enclosures, storage processors, standby power supply, anddisk-array enclosures as described in “Power up” on page 51.

5. Complete the tasks listed in the System setup checklist section as described in “System setup

checklist” on page 71. These tasks include:

a. Attaching the bezel

b. Connecting your Windows client

c. Initializing your system using the VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified

d. Registering your product

Overview: Installing in an existing cabinet

If your system was shipped in a mini-rack:

1. Read and complete the prerequisite tasks as described in “Before you begin checklist” on

page 7. These tasks include:

a. Creating a Product Support account

b. Downloading the VNX7500 Hardware Information Guide 

c. Completing the VNX Unified worksheets

d. Reviewing the resource requirements needed for your system

2. Unpack the shipping boxes and verify the shipping contents as described in “Unpacking the

shipping boxes” on page 9.

3. Remove mini-rack contents as described in “Removing mini-rack contents” on page 10.

4. Assemble the components as described in “Assemble components in your cabinet” onpage 13 in your cabinet by first installing the rails and then installing each system component:

a. Standby power supply

b. Storage processor enclosure

c. Control Stations

d. Blade enclosure

e. DAE 0 (vault DAE)

5. Cable your system as described in “Cable your system” on page 33:

a. Cable your primary Control Station and optionally, a secondary Control Station.

b. Cable your storage processors (SP A and SP B) and blades.

c. Cable the SPS to the SPs (SP A and SP B).

d. Cable SP A and B to DAE 0.

6. Power up your system by connecting power cables, and then verifying that the system

powered up correctly by checking the LEDs of the components as described in “Power up” on

page 51.

7. Optionally, add a disk-array enclosure, power it up and then verify that the DAE was poweredup correct by checking the DAE LED status as described in “Add extra storage” on page 59.

8. Complete the tasks listed in the System setup checklist section as described in “System setup

checklist” on page 71. These tasks include:

a. Attach the bezel.

b. Connect your Windows client.

c. Initialize your system using the VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified.

d. Register your product by creating a Product Support account.

• 2U (unit) (3.5 inches, 8.89 cm) for storage processor enclosure (SPE)

Windows client A Windows-based computer to run the initialization, maintenance, andmanagement tools with:

• At least 500 MB of free space

• Connection on same LAN subnet as your VNX7500 system

• DNS/NTP server network connection to the VNX7500 and the managementhost

• Windows Domain Controller recommended

• SMTP server network connection to the VNX7500 and the management host

• Browsers: Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox

Note: The supported browser versions are listed in the release notes.

Network information The management port and login information in the Planning Worksheets of thisinstall guide. This information includes:

• A static IP address for each storage processor in the system (for example,http://123.45.6.7)

• The IPv6 global prefix and gateway for each SP if your network supports theIPv6 Internet Protocol and you want to manually configure IPv6 for themanagement ports

• The subnet mask of the LAN to which the system is connected

• The default gateway address of the LAN to which the system is connected

Unpacking the shipping boxes

 You might have received your system already racked and cabled in an EMC cabinet or in a minirack.

◆ If your system was shipped in an EMC cabinet:

a. Follow the unpacking instructions on the outside of the box.

b. Go to “Cable your system” on page 33 to verify the cabling.

◆ If your system was shipped in a mini rack:

a. Verify that you have received all of the system’s components, including cables and bezels.

Table 2 lists the shipping contents.

b. For damaged or missing components, notify your Sales associate immediately for 

replacements.

3. Slide the components out and set aside as shown in Figure 2.

a. Slide out from top to bottom.

b. Carefully set aside each component as it is removed.

4. If blade enclosure 1 is included in the mini rack, slide it out, and remove the 2U adjustable

rails separately.

5. Remove the screws on the adjustable rails.

6. Remove the adjustable rails from the shipping container as shown in Figure 3 on page 12.

Installing rails

Two people are required to install the components.

1. Install all the rails into the appropriate location in the site rack (for space considerations find

the lowest available space). Figure 4 through Figure 10 on page 19 show examples of 

installing the rails for the VNX7500 components.

2. Insert the alignment pins of the rails into the holes in the back of the rack. Be sure that both

sides are aligned.

3. Install the screws to hold the adjustable rails in place.

The rails must be aligned carefully and they must be level. Wait until all screws are in place to

tighten the screws.

Note: The VNX7500 supports up to four blade enclosures, a total of eight blades. If the system

does not now include all of the blade enclosures, consider leaving up to 6U of rack space for any

Installing the standby power supply

Two people are required to install the components. To avoid personal injury and/or damage to

the equipment, do not attempt to lift and install the enclosure into a rack without a mechanical

lift or help from another person.

1. Slide the SPS component into the cabinet rails at the bottom of the rack.

2. When the SPS is in place, tighten the screws to hold it in place in the cabinet. Tighten the

screws enough to hold the component in place. Do not tighten the screws completely until all

of the components are in place as shown in Figure 13.

Installing storage processor enclosure

Two people are required to install the components.

The storage processor enclosure (SPE) is 2U in height. It goes into the next available space in the

adjustable rails.

1. Locate the Product ID/SN from the product serial number tag located at the back of the SPE.

Record this number to use when you register the product during system setup installation

steps.

2. Slide the SPE into the slot above the SPS as shown in Figure 14.

3. Install the screws holding the component in place.

It may be easier to install the screws working in a diagonal pattern bottom left and top right,

bottom right and top left.

Two people are required to install the components.

1. Install blade enclosure 1 above blade enclosure 0 as shown in Figure 16.

2. Slide blade enclosure 1 into the 2U adjustable rail above blade enclosure 0.

3. Install the screws holding the components in place. Wait until all components are in place to

tighten all of the screws.

To install optional blade enclosures 2 and 3, follow the procedure described in “Installing 

optional blade enclosure 1” on page 25.

Note: The VNX7500 supports up to four blade enclosures, a total of eight blades. If the systemdoes not now include all of the blade enclosures, consider leaving up to 6U of rack space for any

additional blade enclosures (blade enclosures 1 through 3). If you wish to upgrade at a later time,

the space is available.

Installing Control Stations and extension cables

Note: Install the primary Control Station (CS0) directly above the last blade enclosure in the

cabinet. Figure 17 shows an example of installing CS0 above blade enclosure 1. If you left up to

6U of rack space for upgrading the system at a later time, and you installed blade enclosure 1, 2,

and 3, the primary CS0 would be located above blade enclosure 3 as shown in Figure 18 onpage 28.

1. Slide the primary Control Station (CS0) into the slot above the blade enclosures as shown in

Figure 17.

2. Install the screws holding the Control Station in place. Do not fully tighten the component

screws until all of the components are in place.

3. Install the extension cables after the Control Station has been installed into the rail.

Note: DAE 0 is identified with a sticker over the first four disks (0-3). It can be either a 3U, 15 DAE

or a 2U, 25 DAE.

1. Slide DAE 0 into the slot above the Control Stations as shown in Figure 21.

Cabling Control Station, modem, and public LAN

 Your system may contain one or two Control Stations. The primary Control Station is CS0 and an

optional secondary Control Station is CS1.

1. If you have not removed the labels from the front of CS0 and CS1 (if applicable), remove them

now and attach to the inside cover of this document.

2. Locate the cables shown in Figure 23. You have already connected extension cables and

when you installed the Control Station.

Cabling SPs to the blade management modules

When cabling the VNX7500, the cables from the SP management modules always connect to the

highest numbered blade enclosure at port 0.

Cabling for two blade enclosures1. Locate the cables as shown in Figure 35.

2. Connect SP A MGMT LAN to the highest blade enclosure, which is blade enclosure 3 port 0 on

the A side in the example shown in Figure 36 on page 46.

3. Connect SP B MGMT LAN to the highest blade enclosure, which is blade enclosure 3 port 0 on

the B side.

4. Cross-connect blade enclosure 0 port 0 to blade enclosure 1 port 1 on the A side, if 

applicable.

5. Cross-connect blade enclosure 0 port 0 to blade enclosure 1 port 1 on the B side, if applicable.

6. Cross-connect blade enclosure 1 port 0 to blade enclosure 2 port 1 on the A side, if 

applicable.

7. Cross-connect blade enclosure 1 port 0 to blade enclosure 2 port 1 on the B side, if

Cabling DAE 0 and DAE 1

Cabling between the SPE and the DAEs uses SAS cables.

1. Locate the cables as shown in Figure 39.

2. Connect SPS A to the SP A serial port as shown in Figure 40 on page 49.

3. Connect SPS B to the SP B serial port.

4. Connect the following cables by matching the diamonds and circles on the DAEs

with the diamond and circle on the cable connectors as shown in Figure 40 on

page 49. Ensure that the cables lock into place.

a. Connect SP A A0 Port 0 to DAE 0 LCC A .

b. Connect SP B B0 Port 0 to DAE 1 LCC B .

c. Connect SP A A0 Port 1 to DAE 0 LCC A .

d. Connect SP B B0 Port 1 to DAE 1 LCC B .

5. The connectors for LCC A and LCC B must be connected with the tabs in the opposite position.

For example, on both DAEs, because LCC A and LCC B are reversed, the cable connections into

LCC B and LCC A are also reversed. If the tab on the connector for LCC A is up, then the tab on

LCC B must be down.

Before you power up

1. If you are powering up a dual Control Station system, unplug the power cable on CS1, as thiscomponent should be powered up last.

2. Ensure that the switches for SPS A and SPS B are turned Off.

3. Ensure that the cabinet circuit breaker is in the On position, all necessary PDU switches are

switched On, and power is connected.

Connecting or verifying power cables

1. Connect or verify the power cables as shown in Figure 41 on page 52. Ensure that all the

power cables are locked in place.

Note: Only storage processors should be connected to the SPS.

Disk-array enclosure types

Before you install DAEs in your cabinet, review the DAE section in the VNX7500 Hardware Information Guide . This guide provides cabling examples for interleaving and stacking your DAEs.

Note: The cabling examples described in this guide are for illustration purposes only. Your system

cabling might be different based on how many DAEs you install and whether you use load

balancing to install these DAEs.

DAEs are optional components that add extra storage. DAEs come in:

◆ 2U, 25 (2.5-inch) DAE as shown in Figure 48.

◆ 3U, 15 (3.5-inch) DAE as shown in Figure 49 on page 60.

If DAEs are used, the DAEs should be installed above the top-most blade enclosure in the cabinet.

Either type of DAE may be installed. The arrangement of the DAEs in a cabinet may depend upon a

number of factors. For more information on DAE assembling and arrangement, see the VNX7500 

Hardware Information Guide .

 Assembling the DAEs

The DAE is heavy and should be installed into a rack by two people. To avoid personal injury

and/or damage to the equipment, do not attempt to lift and install the enclosure into a rack without a mechanical lift or help from another person.

1. Unpack shipping boxes.

2. Verify that the following DAE components were shipped:

• Mounting screws

• Bezel

• SAS cables

• Power cables3. Label the cables:

a. Locate the DAE cables and the sheet of labels shown in Figure 50.

b. Attach the cable labels by matching the icons on the connectors with the icons on the

labels.

4. Install the DAE rails:

A 2U DAE will use 2U rails and the 3U DAE will use 3U rails. The DAE rails should be installed

above the topmost blade enclosure. The rails must be aligned carefully.

When arranging DAEs in your cabinet, you should consider rack space, I/O load balancing 

across the disks, and convenience. TheVNX7500 Hardware Information Guide provides moreinformation on racking and cabling options.

a. Insert the adjustable rail slide and seat both alignment pins into the rear channel of your 

cabinet as shown in Figure 51.

b. Extend the rail and align the front of the rails.

c. Insert two retention screws in the front and two retention screws in the back of each rail.

5. Install the DAE:

Two people are required to install the components. To avoid personal injury and/or damage to

a. Slide the DAE onto the rails so that they line up with the tabs in the rear as shown in

Figure 52.

b. When the DAE is in place, tighten all of the screws. It may be easier to install the screws

working in a diagonal pattern, such as bottom left and top right, bottom right and top left.

c. Repeat, as appropriate, with any other DAEs.

Connect SPE and DAE cables

The SAS ports on the SPE are labeled 0, 1, 2, and 3. The VNX7500 Hardware Information Guide  

provides examples of how to cable DAEs in your VNX7500 for interleaved or stacked

environments.

In this example, one DAE (DAE 1) is being added.

1. Locate one pair of cables for each DAE (DAE 0 and 1) as shown in Figure 53.

System setup checklist

After you have finished all the steps including the “Before you begin checklist” on page 7,continue to install, configure, and manage your VNX system by using the System setup checklist

in Table 6.

Note: EMC recommends that you use the latest version of this utility, which

3. Launch VIA and select the Install option. The Welcome screen appears.

4. Click Next. The Select Configuration Profile screen appears.

5. From Configuration Profile Name, select New Configuration, and click

Next.

VIA discovers the Primary Control Station MAC address over the publicLAN. In a dual Control Station configuration, only the Primary ControlStation broadcasts its MAC address.

6. Follow the online instructions to discover and assign IP addresses to

your VNX system.

After initializing your VNX, use the registration wizard in the VIA to register your system for support.

Note: To register your system, you must have a Product Support account. If you do not have an account, go to the https://Support.EMC.com website

1. To register a system from VIA, on the Select a wizard page, click Register

for Support, and follow the online instructions.

2. When you complete the Registration Wizard, the system will transfer 

data to your authorized service provider over the Internet or by

encrypted email.

❏ LaunchUnisphere from

VIA for File/Unifiedapplication

Use Unisphere to manage your VNX system. From VIA:

1. On the Select a Wizard screen, click Launch Unisphere.

2. Allow pop-ups to appear on your browser.

3. Accept all certificates that appear for the IP addresses and set them all

to Always Trust.

4. Log in to Unisphere using sysadmin, global user account.

Note: If you receive a login error, close the browser and re-launch

Unisphere.

5. After you successfully logged in to Unisphere, close VIA.

❏ Update your 

storage systemsoftware

The storage system comes pre-installed with the latest version of the VNX

OE software available at the time of shipment. To see if any patches or newer releases have been made available since shipment, or to install anyenabler software that you ordered with your system:

1. Download and install the Unisphere Service Manager from the VNX

Installation Toolbox CD. It automatically checks to see if newer versions

of the USM are available when you start it up.

Note: You must always update the File OE software first. To ensure that the

File and Block OE compatibility is maintained, go to the EMC support

website at https://Support.EMC.com, and search for the knowledgebase

article titled VNX for Block software supported by VNX for File software,

and refer to the File vs. Block OE compatibility table.

2. Go to the https://mydocs.emc.com/VNX website, and select Update

VNX Software under VNX tasks. Follow the online instructions for your 

system.

Getting Started with VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified provides more information on the

VIA for the File pre-configuration and provisioning processes.

IMPORTANT 

The VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified auto-discovers and pre-populates certain values

based on the system and network environment of your Windows client. Ensure you verify and fill

these values in to the Value column by recording the results of the auto-discovery.
