Whats the issue?
Meaningful Use and the Electronic Health Record
The Issue
– Healthcare needs an extra level of correlation
– An IT centric view does not allow healthcare technical staff to decipher a clinicians issue

Meditech and Other EHR’s
– Meditech is one of the top EHR’s along with Epic, Cerner, Allscripts and many more
– These systems are heavy applications with a non technical end user community

“What’s the issue?”
– When a clinician describes an issue within Meditech, the issue is something like this:
• “That screen was slow when looking at the Patient Discharge Queue.”
• “Why does it take forever for a script to get to the pharmacy?”
• “My reports are very slow when I am in the ER Module.”
– How is IT supposed to troubleshoot?

How much does of downtime cost?
This equates at 1% of downtime a year to approximately 1.4 million dollars!
Estimates for a 1 minute of downtime for a 500 bed hospital at $264.

Understand Normal Metric Behavior
• Unable to understand normal range
of metrics
• Is 65% usage normal for an hour,
day, week or month?
• Or, is it the beginning of a
problem?
• Visibility into normal operation of every
metric in VC
• Continuous, automatic learning of
normal behavior
• Understand metric behavior based on history
• Project forward future behavior hours or days in advance
• Remove guess work and confusion, clarify expectations
• Equivalent of 10 people watching, measuring and adjusting system constantly.
BEFORE AFTER
Increased Visibility into Performance
• Lack of holistic VC environment view
• Can’t determine state of all elements (clusters, hosts, guests) at once
• Overwhelming details obscure valuable information.
• Single pane of glass
• All VC data contextually consolidated
One click to any detail
• Filters on “all” “normal” and “problem”
Searches on any string.
• Visibility, comprehension of virtualized environment in one screen
• Better product usability
• Visually isolate problems via a “HUD” for vCenter
• Unnecessary details hidden until necessary.
BEFORE AFTER
Slide 16
Reduced Complexity
• Administrators blind to brewing problems
• Too much data, too many clicks • Preset thresholds, many details • Impossible to understand
health of elements
• Reduce complexity of usage
• Remove guesswork, provide clarity into the environment
• Speed up MTTR
• Enable administrators to do more with less.
• Provide a single measure of
normality across all virtualized
elements – Health
• Automatically aggregate, correlate
states of 100s of metrics into two
scores for each element – Health
and Workload
BEFORE AFTER
Increased Visibility into Dependencies
A change to this EMR App Server
Directly affects this EMR Server
Could impact these PACS Web Servers
Potential impacted clients
Get better visibility into physical AND virtual infrastructure & applications
Downstream affect on this HL7 server
VMware vCenter Operations Manager
– VMware vC Ops is an industry leading Event Correlation Platform for
• Troubleshooting
• What If Analysis
• Health Reporting
• Root Cause Analysis
• And More…
– BUT…

Out of the Box
– VMware vC Ops is very IT specific
– Correlation of Application, VMware, Servers, Network, Storage and More
20 Copyright © 2013. Lumenate Technologies, LP. All rights reserved.
vC Ops Adapters
– An Adapter is a translation mechanism that can take data from a source and convert it to vC Ops Data
– There are Out of the Box Adapters
– As well Custom Adapters can be written

What’s so Special about the Meditech Adapter?
Its all in the Language
– We needed to enable an IT Administrator to be able to troubleshoot based on what a clinician was complaining about
– Use Native Meditech Language and Statistics in vC Ops
23 Copyright © 2013. Lumenate Technologies, LP. All rights reserved.
How the Adapter was Architected
– The method of delivery is CSV File
• The File Timestamp will be used by vC Ops for time reference
– Needed to create a hierarchy
• In this case we use the Host (VM), the HCIS and the database (module)
– VMNAME, HCIS Name, Database, , Module, Statistic Name, Metric
– FS01, T6.0.7F, MIS, Messages, ITS Documentation from EMR, 24
– Keep it Simple but Robust to support all Meditech Modules
24 Copyright © 2013. Lumenate Technologies, LP. All rights reserved.
Criteria during architecture
– Needed to support multiple VM’s with Same HCIS/Modules
– Needs to not add performance hit on Meditech
– Needs to be scalable across all size customers
