GENERAL INFOS AND APPLICATION ENVIRONMENT

With this simple procedure we will show how to configure a

NIC Teaming on a VMware ESXi host.

In our example we will assume a network scenario with

VMware ESXi hosts with two ethernet interfaces; to utilize NIC

Teaming, two or more network adapters must be uplinked to a

virtual switch.

The NIC Teaming allows to distribute traffic between physical

and virtual networks through two or more uplink; can also be

configured Load Balancing (for avoid overload of the

resources, maximize throughput and minimize response time)

and Failover in case of a hardware failure or network outage.

The network environment is shown in the picture.

Click Properties

Under the Network Adapters tab, click Add

Select the appropriate (unclaimed) network adapter(s) and click Next

Ensure that the selected adapter(s) are under Active Adapters

Click Next > Finish

Under the Ports tab, highlight the name of the port group and click Edit

Click the NIC Teaming tab

Select the correct Teaming policy under the Load Balancing field

Click OK

SETTING THE NIC TEAMING POLICY ON A VIRTUAL SWITCH WITH CLI

1. To list the current NIC teaming policy of a vSwitch, use the command:

esxcli network vswitch standard policy failover get -v vSwitch0

2. To set the NIC teaming policy of a vSwitch, run this command: esxcli network vswitch standard policy failover set -l policy -v vSwitchX

For example, to set the NIC teaming policy of a vSwitch to IP hash: esxcli network vswitch standard policy failover set -l iphash -v vSwitch0

vswitch name

load balancing policy

SETTING THE NIC TEAMING POLICY ON A PORT GROUP WITH CLI

1. To list the current NIC teaming policy of a port group, run this command:

esxcli network vswitch standard portgroup policy failover get -p "Management Network"

2. To set the NIC teaming policy of a port group, run this command: esxcli network vswitch standard portgroup policy failover set -p "Management Network" -l "Policy Options"

portgroup name
