ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

� The Department of Animal Husbandry came into existence in December 1971.

� In 1977, Department was upgraded to Directorate of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services.

� Secretary (AH) is the administrative head of the Department.

� The Department is headed by the Director of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services.

� Three Districts are headed by Senior Veterinary Officers (Zonal Officers)

OBJECTIVES:

���� Providing Veterinary Health coverage to livestock a nd birds including Vaccination, Disease Diagnosis and Disease Surveillance.

���� Up-gradation of genetic resources of livestock i.e. Cattle, Buffaloes, Goats and Pigs as well as Poultr y.

���� To provide improved variety of poultry birds and Veterinary Health Care and Vaccination etc for high er production.

���� To impart training to the farmers & unemployed pers ons on Animal Husbandry practices on scientific lines f or self employment.

���� Augmenting the production of Milk, Meat and Egg.

MISSION:

• To provide veterinary health care and to take preve ntive measures against diseases affecting the livestock a nd poultry.

• To upgrade local stock of livestock and birds by infusing superior germplasm in the local stock of animals and birds with the active support and co-operation of the farming committee.

• To provide basic training in scientific husbandry practices as well as educating the farmers through extension activities.

SERVICES:

A. PLAN SCHEMES:

� Treatment of sick animals � To provide Diagnostic services and other Veterinary

Services for the poultry farmers as well as to prov ide Vaccination for the Poultry Diseases.

� Artificial Insemination for Cattle and Buffalloe fo r breed improvement.

� Supply of Vanaraja Birds /Vanaraja day old chicks/ backyard poultry birds/ Ducklings etc., to the farm ers as per availability.

� Establishment and maintenance of Composite Livestoc k Farms and Hatcheries and to provide good quality of calf/piglets/kids of goats to the farmers as per th e availability.

� To establish grazing/fodder land in all the panchay ats and to assist in the development of fodder land by the farmers through supply of inputs.

� To Carryout extension services for propagation of departmental activities and to provide training in Piggery, Poultry keeping, goatery, Dairy Farming an d fodder cultivation etc.,

B. OTHER SERVICES

� Technical assistance provided i.e Project Reports, Training etc., provided to the farmers for getting financial assistance from the bank for establishing Animal Husbandry ventures.

� Providing training and engaging Part Time Volunteer s for performing Artificial Insemination & Castration in remote areas.

� Deputation of progressive farmers for study tour to mainland for scientific rearing of Poultry, Duckery , Goatery, Piggery and Dairy farming

� Accountability and transparency in public service. � Hearing of all public grievances/ complaints.

C. CENTRALLY SPONSORED SCHEME:

The following Centrally Sponsored Schemes being imp lemented by this Department:-

i. Assistance to State Control for Animal Diseases (AS CAD)-

Clinical survey, collection of sera from identified areas/district

covering all islands.

ii. Foot and Mouth Diseases-Control Programme- Maintenance of

livestock premises, strengthening of laboratory, Di sinfection of

villages, Vaccination of livestock.

iii. National Project on Rinderpest Eradication:- Sero surveillance,

clinical surveillance, Village searches and the awa reness

campaign.

iv. Integrated Sample Survey for estimation of MLP- Estimation of

major livestock product such as Milk, Egg and Meat on season

basis were conducted.

v. Assistance to conduct of Livestock Census- Conduct of Livestock

Census

D. RASTRIYA KRISHI VIKAS YOJANA:

� Distribution of bucks to the villages for up-gradat ion of their local goats by providing natural services.

� Distribution of Large White Yorkshire Piglets on co st basis as per availability.

� Distribution of poultry birds to the tribal farmers on 50% subsidy as per availability.

� Setting up of milk supply chain from Diglipur to Po rt Blair- To help ANIIDCO Ltd in improving the market availability of milk in North and Middle Andaman an d also to give remunerative price to the local farmer s of that area.

� Strengthening of Animal Husbandry Delivery system i n Andaman & Nicobar Islands.- Provision of Mobile Veterinary in A& N Islands- To provide an efficient Animal Health Delivery System at the door steps of the local farmers and tribals in all the islands by providing Mobile Veterinary Dispensaries.

� Immunization of Rural Poultry - Engaging Part-time Volunteers fo r vaccination of poultry birds.

� Incentive for Hygienic Pig Production -Providing 50 % Subsidy on construction of Hygienic pig shed/ shelt er with concrete flooring.
