Economical Disaster Recovery through
Virtualization
Mario MarquezSenior Systems Engineer – Canada
The number 1 reason SMB’s virtualize is for disaster recovery
Before Virtualization…
• Before virtualization only large companies with large IT budgets could afford “hot-site” disaster recovery (DR)
• DR capabilities required duplicate hardware and infrastructure and very complex failover processes
• As hardware and software at the source site were modified those changes had to be made at the DR site as well
• Hot-site disaster recovery effectively consisted of having 2 datacenters to manage
• Testing of backups almost impossible for the SMB
After Virtualization…
• Disaster recovery now available to even the smallest businesses
• Now complete failover capabilities can be obtained for any business far less cost than was previously available in the industry
• Virtual machines are portable and as such can easily be copied to alternate sites, DR facilities or co-located servers for quick resumption of business in the event of a failure or catastrophe
• Testing backups becomes as simple as the click of a button
The Cost of Downtime
Source: AFCOM Membership Survey (Association For Computer Operations Management); Data Center Institute
What would a major disruption cost your company per hour?
Key Takeaways
•All organizations lose at least $50K / hour due to downtime
•>50% or organizations risk losing >$250K/hour
Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity
Provide DR & BC with less risk and time than backup
solutions
Short replication windows and
network bandwidth constraints
Migrate VMs to distant data
centers & ensure performance
Problem Space
Provide replication without significant CapEx & OpEx

White Space Detection
vReplicator
White Space Detection
• vReplicator detects and ignores empty blocks, resulting in smaller replications
• Dramatically improves replication speed

Active Block Mapping (ABM)
vReplicator
Active Block Mapping (ABM)
• Patent-pending technology designed to eliminate scanning and transfer of previously deleted data
• Provides dramatically faster replications with lower network bandwidth requirements

Change Block Tracking (CBT)
vReplicator
Change Block Tracking (CBT)
• Utilizes CBT capabilities in vSphere to identify changed data blocks allowing vReplicator to replicate optimally
• Provides dramatically faster replications by removing overhead associated with changed block discovery

vSphere & Thin Provisioning
vReplicator
vSphere & Thin Provisioned Disk Support
• Enables the replicated VM to be created with thin disks
• Deploy thin provisioned disks in production without compromising DR storage

How vReplicator Works
1• Initial Pass – without ABM or CBT enabled • Replication engine removes whitespace • Applies to ESX 3.5 and ESX 4.0 hosts

2• Initial pass – with ABM enabled • Active Block Mapping (ABM) replicates only active blocks. • Blocks occupied by deleted data not replicated.

6• Differential replication pass with ABM and CBT enabled • Only supported on ESX 4 hosts• Blocks replicated does not change, but scan times are
much lower, resulting in much faster replications
