A maior parte do Bangladesh está apenas 10 metros acima do nível do mar. O delta e a planície dos rios Ganges e Brahmaputra cobrem cerca de 250 km2. Mais de 90 milhões de pessoas habitam nesta área. As cheias de 1987 cobriram 40% do país e em 1988 alagaram 62%.
