Jane Benney

Page 5: VIVA International

Born in Zimbabwe and raised mostlyin South Africa, Jane began performing onstage at a very early age. As a pageantwinner and stage actress, she soon beganearning accolades for her talent. Jane landeda lead role in her first feature film, LeonSchuster's MR. BONES, which stands as thehighest-grossing South African film of all time.

VIVA..As a child growing up, did you alwaysdream of being in the entertainmentbusiness, how did it all start?Jane...I have always been involved in thearts. From as early as I can remember I wasthe little kid who dragged everyone outsidein the cold to watch a play that I was writer, director, producer, actor, singer and dancer in.I was very fortunate to have a mother whofostered my love for the performing arts.VIVA..I have done some research and readthat you where involved in the TelevisionIndustry in South Africa as a presenter,do you find the movie industry moredemanding, and is it an avenue thatyou would like to persue?Jane...Ever since i did my first feature film -Mr Bones - the movie bug bit! I still love tosing and dance, and hosting can be a lot offun, but acting in films and exploring thatprocess is what thrills me the most. I thinkall avenues of the entertainment industryare demanding. This job is not for the faintof heart, or weak of spirit. There's a lot ofrejection, and a lot more hard work behindthe scenes, but the end result is so veryworth it!VIVA..Your latest movie All for Melissa, what was it about the script that drewyou into accepting the part of Alicia?Jane...I LOVE Romantic comedies, whatcan i say, i am a hopeless romantic! Thedirector of All for Melissa loves that genretoo, and he created a film that was quirkyand sweet, and also paid homage to hisfavorite Rom-coms. The character Aliciais just the sweetest thing. Loyal, kind,

VIVA..Do you believe things happen fora reason?Jane...Absolutely!!! We're all so much moreconnected to each other and the world thanwe could possibly fathom!VIVA..Is there anyone you would loveto work alongside?Jane...So much so! Meryl Streep isunbelievable. I know that everyone saysthat, but she really profoundly impacted meas a child... I think just to even see her inreal life would be extraordinary. I'm reallyenjoying Freddy Rodriguez's performances,Kate Winslet is a genius. I love love,Chiwetel Ejiofor from "Love actually" and"Dirty Pretty things". I would LOVE to workwith him! Put it this way, there are a TONof people i'd love to work with! Way toomany to mention!VIVA..You spend most of your time nowin Los Angeles, and home is in Hawaii, what do you miss most when away fromHawaii?Jane...Oh my! Everything! The weather is justgorgeous, the beaches are wonderful. Thethings i miss the most though are more aboutmy friends and the people of Hawaii thananything else. Everyone is so wonderfully laidback... and so nice to each other on the roads.Driving in LA as most people have heard isfrightening! People sure can get aggressive!I try to spread the Aloha cheer on LA streets! The world can always use a little more love!VIVA.. Did the love of your life sweep youof your feet this Valentines Day?Jane...

loving. It's a great day when you leave a set,and you're not emotionally drained, or you'vebeen playing an angry person all day! Notthat that isn't fun too... HAha!

I don't believe in Valentines day! I call itHallmark day! Honestly though, i celebrate thelove of my life as often as i can! Luckily we'reboth romantics! Each day is valentines day!

Thank you Jane for taking the time out ofyour busy schedule to have a chat.We wish you every success with All forMelissa! Editor Viva Magazine

WINNING THE COLD WAR NATURALLY by Joy Burnett

With winter in full swing it is important to improve and maintain thebody's immune functioning and therefore our ability to ward off coldsand flu.So many problems start with the common cold that it is best not toignore it and to start treating it at the first sign of a snuffle. It is theresult of a virus and we all know the awful symptoms it can present.Eyes, ears, chest, head and nose can all be affected, sometimesaccompanied by sneezing, shivering and fever. Long term lung andsinus congestion often result from an apparently common cold andchronic catarrhal and lung conditions weaken the whole body.

Take steps now towards prevention and treatment: Increase your intake of vitamin C in the form of lots of fruit andvegetables and take a vitamin C suppliment of at least 1000mg.

The herbal remedy Echinacea is a tremendous boost to the immunesystem this time of year.

The Homeopathic remedies Kalium Muriaticum and NatriumMuriaticum are recommended too.

Hot elderflower, ginger, honey and lemon tea is also useful.

Natural antibiotics such as garlic, fresh or in capsuleform give and extra boost.

During a cold avoid dairy products, sugars and whiteflour as these are all mucus producing.

At the onset of a cold use an inhalation of Eucalyptus,Chamomile, Tea Tree or Lavender 2 / 4 drops dilutedin hot water and inhaled directly with a towel overyour head, 4 /10 drops in a warm bath or 2 dropsstraight onto a hankerchief.

Have a regular Aromatherapy Treatment at the Rainbow BridgeCentre, El Palomar, Zarra, 616705731, 961893326.

3 and half cups whole mixed olives, drained 1/4 cup dry white wine 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 sprigs fresh rosemary 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped 1 and half tablespoons chopped fresh oregano 4 teaspoons grated orange zest 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Stir the olivestogether with the wine, orange juice, olive oil, and garlic in a9 x13 inch baking dish. Nestle the sprigs of rosemary in the olives.

2. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, stirring halfwaythrough the baking. Remove and discard the rosemary sprigs, thenstir in the parsley, oregano, orange zest, and red pepper flakes.

Serve warm, or cool the olives and use them to top a salad.

RECEIPE /RECETA

The benefits of an OliveOlives are concentrated in monounsaturated fats and a good source ofvitamin E. Because mono-unsaturated fats are less easily damaged thanpolyunsaturated fats, it's good to have some in our cells' outer membranesand other cell structures that contain fats, such as the membranes thatsurround the cell's DNA and each of its energy-producing mitochondria.

Page 9: VIVA International

The stability of monounsaturated fats translatesinto a protective effect on the cell that, especiallywhen combined with the antioxidant protectionoffered by vitamin E, can lower the risk of damageand inflammation. In addition to vitamin E,olives contain a variety of beneficial activephytonutrient compounds including polyphenolsand flavonoids, which also appear to havesignificant anti-inflammatory properties.

Protection From Heart DiseaseFree radical damage can lead to numerousailments. For example, when free radicalscause the oxidation of cholesterol, the oxidizedcholesterol damages blood vessels and buildsup in arteries, and can eventually lead to heartattack or stroke. So, by preventing the oxidationof cholesterol, the nutrients in olives help toprevent heart disease.

Beneficial Anti-Inflammatory EffectsThe anti-inflammatory actions of the monounsaturated fats, vitaminE and polyphenols in olives may also help reduce the severity ofasthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, three conditionswhere most of the damage is caused by high levels of free radicals. The vitamin E in olives may even help to reduce the frequency and/orintensity of hot flashes in women going through menopause.

Why shop locally?Shopping, for most of us, is simply another chore. We trudge around the largeindoor shopping centres and tend to fill our trolleys with what we really do not evenneed, we buy simply because it is there. Shopping locally in small local shops canbe economical, and not costly as a lot of us may think. Fresh produce availabledaily you can choose to buy as much or as little as you need. The benefit ofshopping centres are great in that on a cold wet day, what better place to be.

Here in Spain we have glorious weather most of the time, so why not get out intothe plazas, have a look at what our localshops and businesses have to offer.

So what the benefits of shopping locally?Fresh daily produce, a smile across thethe counter and even a few words, personal service, advice on what to buy (for those of us who are not sure),purchase as little or as much as you want, and of course we can window-shop,and stop in the plaza for a refreshment.Supporting local business is what weshould all be doing, without our smalllocal shops we can very easily loose acommunity.

Next time you go shopping, take a strollaround town, have a look at what is onoffer.

Support your local business community, they are here for you!

There are two ways to do this -first, apply for their tickets online at Fifa's website by signing up for the Fifa.comClub. This applies to both international and local fans. Alternatively, South Africanresidents may go to any First National Bank (FNB) branch and submittheir applications in person. Those applying online must have credit card detailsready. Once all applications have been processed, a text message will be sentto all applicants to advise them of the success or failure of their bid. If successful, the relevant credit card must be used to collect printed tickets at stadiums andother designated points in each of the nine host cities. These points will only beoperational from April 2010. The total value will be deducted from the credit cardonly if the application is approved. Those applying at FNB branches must have the funds ready as they will berequired to pay upfront. All applicants will receive an FNB Visa Zakumi PrepaidCard, to the value of the tickets purchased. The green-haired leopard Zakumi isthe official mascot of the 2010 sporting spectacle.Again, applicants will receive a text message to advise them whether their bidhas been successful or not. If successful, the prepaid card must be used tocollect printed tickets at stadiums and other designated points in the nine hostcities. If unsuccessful, the money on the card may be used at any Visa retailerin South Africa, or may be refunded at any FNB branch. All applications received during this phase will be processed at the same time, and every fan who registers correctly will have an equal chance, so it makes nodifference whether bids are submitted on the first or last day of the phase. If there are more tickets than applications, all applications will succeed and therewill be no disappointed fans. If there are more applications than tickets, a randomdraw scheduled for 15 April 2009 will ensure that tickets are allocated fairly.Phase Two runs from 4 May to 16 November 2009. These applications will beprocessed on a first come, first served basis, so time will be of the essence.Phase Three runs from 5 December 2009 to 22 January 2010, when tickets willbe allocated through a random draw on 1 February of that year.Phase Four runs from 9 February to 7 April 2010. As in Phase Two, tickets willbe allocated in the order in which applications are received - the earlier thebetter.Phase Five runs from 15 April to 11 June 2010, in the last-minute sales phase.Application forms will not be used; instead, tickets may be bought in real time -subject to availability - on the Fifa website and at FNB branches.

Exhilaration and Bigsmiles all round aftera successful sharkcage dive.

Big fish, big teeth, big bucksWant to go eyeball to eyeball with a great white shark? Most of us are terrifiedof sharks, but a new South African industry is making good money by droppingpeople into the ocean, in a cage, to get up close to the big fish. And, at the sametime, helping to preserve these ancient and magnificent creatures. For those who want to get up and personalwith a great white, there is no better placein the world than Gansbaai, near CapeTown in the Western Cape. This once-sleepy little fishing village is close to anenormous Cape fur seal colony, whichbecomes a seasonal larder for a largetransient population of great white sharks. And these, in turn, support a burgeoningshark cage diving industry.(While Gansbaai is the centre of theindustry, there is also one operator inFalse Bay in Cape Town and one inMossel Bay.)Before the dive you are given a comprehensive briefing that includes essentialsafety information as well as detailed information about the sharks and thegeneral marine environment. You then head out to sea in one of the big, stablecage diving boats. www.mediaclubsouthafrica.com

Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman,Matt Damon … top box office earners areheaded for South Africa in 2009, as CapeTown ramps up its growing reputation asthe Hollywood of Africa. The city has been an increasingly popularlocation for filmmakers since South Africawas welcomed back into the globalcommunity in 1994. Over 50 major

productions – feature films and TV series – were shot in Cape Town in the fiveyears from 2003 to 2007, including Blood Diamond, Rendition and 10 000 BC.In 2008 no less than 22 productions were filmed in the city. Clint Eastwood is todirect The Human Factor, an adaptation of John Carlin’s book The HumanFactor: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Changed the World. It tells thestory of South Africa’s victory, on home turf, in the 1995 Rugby World Cup,when Mandela and rugby captain Francois Pienaar united to inspirereconciliation between black and white South Africans – only a year after theend of apartheid. Mandela is to be played by Morgan Freeman, whose previousproductions include The Dark Knight, Evan Almighty and Lucky Number Slevin, while Oscar-winner Matt Damon – star of The Departed, Ocean's Thirteen andThe Bourne Ultimatum – will play Pienaar.

Wally Cannon - in the kitchen and into the fridgeIt is pretty easy to put together. I am basically taking an approach that is used all over Europe –find some stuff in the house and make a snack for the family.

Ingredients- 2 Store bought 9” pie crust.- 8 eggs (be prepared to separate the yolks and whites).- ½ lb of Pastrami- Mushrooms, we have Portobello and Button.- One Red Onion- 2 Carrots- Ricotta Cheese- Shredded American- Spices and Herbs- Basil- Oregano- Allspice- Thyme- Salt and Pepper (pinches)- Baking Powder (2 pinches)

I happen to have a food processor so some of the stuff goes a little faster, but this is a quick dish.

Slice the following ingredients into thin strips – Pastrami, Potato, Carrots, Onion, Mushrooms. You need to let the Pastrami, Onions and Mushrooms “sweat” a little in a pan on the stove –no frying, just need to cook them up a little – the mushrooms have a lot of water, want to getsome of them out. Take off the heat and let cool while you prepare the wet portion.

Separate Eggs Yolks and Whites in a bowl (or food processor) beat 8 egg yolks and 4 whiteswhile adding the spices and herbs. In another bowl, beat the whites (till frothy but peaksare not required).

In large bowl, combine Eggs, Ricotta Cheese with the Pastrami, Onions and Mushrooms whileadding the baking powder for thickening and to add a little rise. Take the pie pans, light coat them with olive oil and poke a few holes in them with a fork for air.Place the Potatoes and Carrots in the bottom and cover with the Egg / Cheese / Mushroom /Pastrami mixture. Cover with the Shredded American.

Now they are ready for the preheated oven (350 degrees – F) – you only need about 10-15minutes. They will be come golden brown. Take them out – let cool, slice and serve.

Enjoy!

The Ricote Valley was the last Moorishredoubt in Spanish Levante. This isone of the most beautiful and undiscoveredparts of the fertile irrigated plainsaround the River Segura. The towns ofRicote, Ojós, Abarán, Blanca, Ulea,Villanueva del Segura and Archena, surrounded by fruit and citrus orchards, transport us to an ideal world.A fertile plain that clings to its Arab heritage,as shown by the numerous remains fromthis period, including its irrigation systems.Ricote maintains a rich gastronomicaltradition in which the local wine is theprotagonist. Blanca has retained its legacyas a producer of esparto grass.

DISCOVER MURCIA ,SPAIN VALLE DE RICOTE

In Abarán, visitors can follow a route thatwill lead them to four of the manywaterwheels, or "ñoras" as they are knownin the area, which transport water from theriver to irrigate the most distant plains. Fromthis area the landscape changes and weenter a more open area famous for its fruitorchards, particularly peach, and itscontrasting landscapes, making it particularlyattractive for engaging in sports such ashiking, BTT or rock climbing. Other open-airsports that can be pursued here includerafting on the River Segura or horse-ridingalong routes offered by various horse ridingcentres. Visitors can find a range ofaccommodation in the form of typical ruralproperties, imbued with the wealth ofpleasures offered by the Ricote Valley.

Most small towns have friendly mayors whoare willing to help the stranger to settle in.They also endeavour to protect the countryside but allow the public to use the protected areas.(In the outskirts of most towns there are recreational areas withvBBQ fireplaces, tables andbenches for public use), hiking trails are well marked, canoeing and kayaking is permitted onthe rivers and lakes, horse riding is encouraged, etc.Editorial supplied by Old Farmhouses Spain, www.oldfarmhouses.es Tel: (0034) 968 15 92 64
