Vittorio Spernanzoni was born in 1936 in Morrovalle, in the heart of Le Marche. Right in the aftermath of the war, he started working at a very young age as a shop boy at a shoemaker’s of his town. Soon he would start his own workshop - out of the space below his home’s stairs - trying out different finishing techniques. In 1965 he started his business adventure, and produced the first shoes entirely made in his workshop. Although passed away prematurely, he had been able to transfer his knowledge - and passion - onto his children Enrico, Roby and Lorella, who are still working in line with the teachings of their father, to create extremely detailed pieces. Naturally drawn towards always improving its skills in this trade, over 20 years Spernanzoni has been able to establish its name as one of the best hand-made workshops in the world, manufacturing goodyear welted shoes and many more. Thanks to its reputation, the company has secured partnerships with some of the major international fashion brands.The creation of an entirely hand-made line under the Vittorio Spernanzoni brand is aiming at paying tribute to the late founder but it also represents the consistent choice to save and revamp the hand-made tradition that still relies on skilled craftsmen, who - with just a bunch of tools, endless patient and great ability - create long-lasting products. By the Vittorio Spernanzoni line, the company wishes to create exclusive products making the most of manual and craftsmanship skills, as the result of a process of de-industrialisation of the production line. Each manufacturing stage is entirely hand-made to make sure items have a unique personality, mirroring their creators’ skills and flair. It’s up to craftsmen to develop each single stage: from cut to stitching and mounting and last but not least, finishing, the key element to give the shoes the final touch. These techniques are typical of the pre-industrial cobbler workshop activity, when this service was enjoyed by rich people until the Forties and the Fifties, as the expression of a timeless art. Tradition and innovation meet in an attempt to discover - yet again - this timeless, accurate know-how now almost lost to mankind. With patience and total dedication, each pair of shoes is created, step-by-step, by the precise hands of the craftsman, who gives these products the most important of values: time. Indeed, over time is when shoes turn into little works of art, as the result of skills and passion of those who spent years of their lives learning how to master this old trade.

Giovanissimo, negli anni del dopoguerra, inizia a lavorare come garzone presso un calzaturificio del suo paese. Dopo poco tempo avvia, nel sottoscala di casa, un piccolo laboratorio nel quale inizia a cimentarsi con le differenti tecniche di finissaggio del prodotto. Nel 1965 prende il via la sua avventura imprenditorialecon la prima produzione di calzature interamente realizzate nel suo laboratorio. Scomparso prematuramente, riesce comunque a trasmettere il proprio sapere e la propria passione ai figli Enrico, Roby e Lorella, i quali continuano ancora oggi a lavorare lungoil percorso tracciato dal padre, realizzando prodotti curati in ogni minimo dettaglio. Questa connaturata propensione al continuo miglioramento della conoscenza del proprio mestiere, ha permesso all’azienda Spernanzoni di affermarsi, nell’arco di un ventennio, come uno dei più eccellenti laboratori artigianali al mondo, nella produzione di calzature goodyear welted e non solo. In virtù di questo primato l’azienda è divenuta nel tempo partner di alcuni fra i più noti brand della moda mondiale.La nascita di una linea di prodotti fatti interamente a mano a marchio Vittorio Spernanzoni vuole quindi essere, oggi, non solo un omaggio al fondatore scomparso, ma anche e soprattutto una scelta di coerente recupero di una tradizione manifatturiera che continua ad affidarsi esclusivamente all’abilità dell’artigiano, il quale, con pochi arnesi, crea con infinita pazienza e grande perizia prodotti destinati a durare nel tempo. Con Vittorio Spernanzoni l’azienda intende creare un prodotto esclusivo che sappia esprimere al meglio i plus di una costruzione rigorosamente manuale e artigianale, frutto di un processo di deindustrializzazione delle stesse fasi di lavorazione. Ogni fase viene infatti prevalentemente fatta a mano, in modo che ciascun prodotto possa riflettere la personalità e l’abilità del proprio artefice. Spetta pertanto all’artigiano eseguire, con la perizia di un vero e proprio maestro, tutte le fasi che compongono ogni calzatura, dal taglio all’orlatura, fino ad arrivare al montaggio e al finissaggio; elemento chiave che impreziosisce il prodotto in maniera decisiva. Si torna così ad un modus operandi tipico della calzoleria preindustriale, appannaggio dei grandi signori fino agli anni ’40 e ’50 ed espressione di un’arte senza tempo. In questo modo tradizione e innovazione si incontrano nel recupero meticoloso e attento di una conoscenza secolare, che il tempo ha spesso rischiato di sottrarre alla memoria dell’uomo. Con pazienza e assoluta concentrazione ogni calzatura nasce, passaggio dopo passaggio, grazie al meticoloso lavoro delle mani dell’artigiano, le quali conferiscono al prodotto il valore più importante: quello del tempo. è infatti nel tempo e attraverso il tempo che ogni calzatura diventa una piccola opera d’arte, frutto della perizia e della dedizione di una persona che ha dedicato molti anni della propria vita all’apprendimento di questo antico mestiere.

One of the key elements of a hand-made, top-quality product is the selection of leathers: these must have a crusty colour or have features that allow removing the colour at any time, even after years. This allows bringing them back to their ‘neutral’ stage and then dyeing them again. When they arrive to the tannery, they’re like white canvasses, with no defined colours. Being so, craftsmen can customise leathers as they please and with a palette of dyes and polishes, applied in layers, by hand directly with a brush, turn them into unique masterpieces.In some cases, colours are also removed from the shoes with suitable products to reveal the ‘core’. Later on, they would be dyed and polished using specific creams to obtain the desired colour and shade. Each shoe is then polished by hand with bee’s wax and water, to produce the sufficient heat and make sure leather pores close up naturally. This process gives the shoes an extremely special shiny effect.

Una delle caratteristiche chiave di un prodotto rigorosamente fatto a mano e di assoluto pregio è quella di essere realizzato con pellami selezionati, assolutamente neutri nella colorazione (Crust) o con pellami che hanno delle caratteristiche tali che in ogni momento, anche dopo anni, possono essere completamente decolorati fino ad essere portati al loro stato originario, per poi essere ricolorati. Si tratta di vere e proprie “tele bianche” che non hanno un colore già ben definito dalla conceria. In questo modo l’artigiano addetto al finissaggio potrà personalizzarle completamente e renderle ricche di sfumature come dei veri e propri pezzi unici. Ciò avviene grazie all’utilizzo di un’ampia tavolozza di tinture e lucidi, applicati strato su strato, sfumatura su sfumatura, direttamente a mano o tramite l’ausilio di un pennello. In taluni casi, la calzatura viene addirittura decolorata con appositi prodotti al fine di scoprire il “fiore” della pelle. The Reserve seam is the result of a very special process. Once the upper has been cut, it is turned upside down and welted to be invisible looking, pushing the needle into the leather without ever completely piercing it. Sometimes using 1.2 mm thick leathers, the skilled hands of craftsmen can push the needle between 0.4 and 0.8 mm. Needless to say that, after years of practice, cobblers have developed a very precise touch, the real essential skill to properly use the awl and the needle and perfectly perform such a difficult procedure. Once sewn, the upper is mounted on the last and then the antique finish is applied. Thanks to the different grains and layers of the leather, this procedure allows for truly unique, never-the-same effects and shades.

La Cucitura a Rovescio è frutto di un processo particolarissimo. Tagliata la tomaia, infatti, questa viene girata al contrario e giuntata in maniera “invisibile”, facendo passare l’ago all’interno dello spessore del pellame, senza mai bucarlo completamente. Grazie all’utilizzo di pellami spessi anche 1,2 mm, la mano esperta dell’artigiano riesce a far passare l’ago a uno spessore fra gli 0,4 e gli 0,8 mm. Inutile dire che solo dopo anni e anni di esperienza, il calzolaio riesce ad avere una sensibilità necessaria ad usare la lesina e l’ago, in modo adeguato a poter effettuare questa difficilissima operazione. Terminata la cucitura la tomaia viene girata per essere montata su forma, e infine anticata. I vari livelli di pellame che si creano grazie a questa tecnica rendono delle sfumature e degli effetti sulla pelle davvero inconfondibili.

Any hand-made product shall be created using high-quality materials and above all, the leathers for the upper.Fine leather grain has to be a small-pored and imperfection-free. Master cobblers shall not only be able to select the best leathers but also to cut it right in the most suitable way for the item it is used for. This procedure allows the leather to be soft, resistant and keep its shine year after year. The Vittorio Spernanzoni collection features plenty of coarse grain calfskin – i.e. not tannery-refined.

This is a crucial factor that makes hand-made products stand out when compared to other crafted products. Each hand-made pair is customised and tanned only using dyes and polishes, so that shades will be so unique they could never be achieved in serial production.

In ogni prodotto fatto a mano vengono utilizzati materiali di pregio, fra questi quello più importante è senza dubbio il pellame con cui si realizza la tomaia. Una pelle pregiata deve presentare il fiore senza imperfezioni, con il poro piccolissimo. Il maestro calzolaio deve non solo saper selezionare la pelle migliore, ma deve anche essere abile nel tagliarla nel punto e nel verso più adatto, in base al tipo di prodotto da realizzare. Questo permette alla calzatura di mantenere le medesime caratteristiche di morbidezza, resistenza e lucentezza anche dopo anni.Fra i materiali utilizzati nella collezione Vittorio Spernanzoni ci sono molti vitelli a fiore scoperto, non rifiniti in conceria, la culatta di cavallo (cordovan) della conceria americana Horween, il pregiatissimo coccodrillo crust della conceria Heng Long ed il Kudu, pelle di antilope africana, della conceria Brizzi.Questo fattore differenzia in maniera decisiva un prodotto fatto a mano da un qualsiasi altro realizzato artigianalmente. Ogni calzatura hand made viene infatti personalizzata e colorata solo con tinture e lucidi, applicati direttamente sul singolo prodotto. Le sfumature ottenute saranno pertanto uniche e mai riproducibili in maniera identica.
