MRH celebrates Hospital WeekFacilities throughout the Maury Regional Health (MRH) system celebrated Hospital Week in May with an array of special activities to commemorate the commitment to quality care that MRH employees, physicians and volunteers provide throughout the year.

Decades-themed activities ranged from free snacks and cook-out lunches to contests and games as well as a fashion show and concert. Hospital Week also featured the annual system-wide service awards banquet held May 9.

Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) received an “A” for patient safety from Th e Leapfrog Group for the 11th consecutive reporting period with the release of spring 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades in May.

“We are committed to continually measuring and monitoring our performance across national patient safety measures to ensure that we off er outstanding care to our patients,” said Maury Regional Health CEO Alan Watson. “Th is consistent ‘A’ rating is refl ective of the commitment of our employees, physicians and volunteers to ensure the safety of those who entrust us with their health care needs.”

Th e Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofi t organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. Safety grades are assigned to hospitals across the country based on their performances in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and

“To be recognized nationally as an ‘A’ hospital is an accomplishment the whole community should take pride in,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of Th e Leapfrog Group. “Hospitals that earn an ‘A’ grade are making it a priority to protect patients from preventable medical harm and error.”

Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. Th e Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and available to the public.

Dr. Davis leads surgical weight loss seminarPatrick Davis, M.D., a board-certifi ed surgeon with Maury Regional Medical Group Surgery, conducted a community seminar in April about surgical weight loss options.

“Obesity-related health conditions are among the leading causes of preventable death,” Dr. Davis said. “Weight loss surgery is a life-changing procedure that has been shown to be an eff ective and safe way to treat — and even prevent — these conditions.”

Community members attended the seminar to learn about the two types of weight loss surgeries performed at Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC). Information about the Surgical Weight Loss Support Group that meets at MRMC was also available.

Dr. Turner presents at national conferenceChristopher P. Turner, M.D., chief medical offi cer for Maury Regional Medical Group and specialist in internal medicine and pediatrics, presented at the 16th annual Observation Management Summit held in Chicago, Illinois, in April.

Dr. Turner’s conference presentation was titled, “Determine Appropriate Metrics to Track to Help You Exceed Benchmarks and Elevate the Level of Observation Care.”

Th e presentation highlighted how establishing and following quality metrics can play a signifi cant role in preventing patient readmissions.

Dr. Barr retires from medical staffJames G. Barr, M.D., Ph.D., a specialist in nephrology and internal medicine, recently retired from private practice aft er 25 years.

Dr. Barr joined the medical staff in 1994. He earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee at Memphis and completed his residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He is board certifi ed in internal medicine.

Following his retirement, Dr. Barr will remain connected to the health system as an affi liate staff member in addition to continuing to serve as chair of MRH’s Ethics Committee.

“Dr. Barr has been an exemplary member of our medical staff and the Maury Regional team for the past 25 years,” said MRH CEO Alan Watson. “Please join me in expressing our appreciation

for his continued service to our organization. We wish him well in his retirement from private practice.”

ORGANIZATIONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS—

Dr. Turner named CMO for MRMGChristopher P. Turner, M.D., a specialist in internal medicine and pediatrics, has been named chief medical offi cer (CMO) for Maury Regional Medical Group (MRMG).

Dr. Turner received his medical degree from the University of Missouri’s School of Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri, where he also completed his internship and residency. He is board certifi ed in internal medicine and pediatrics. In addition to his medical credentials, Dr. Turner holds a master’s degree in health care management from Vanderbilt University.

Prior to accepting the role of CMO for MRMG, Dr. Turner served on the medical staff at Maury Regional Medical Center as a hospital medicine

physician associated with MRMG and will continue to do so on a part-time basis. He also served as medical director for the observation unit adjacent to the Emergency Department.

“Dr. Turner is an exceptional and well-respected leader,” said MRMG CEO Mike Fecher. “We are pleased to welcome him into this new leadership role.”

Perez appointed to interim nurse manager role for EDAmanda Perez, RN, BSN, was recently appointed to interim nurse manager for the Emergency Department (ED) at Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC). She will also manage the observation unit.

Perez has been employed by MRMC since 2006. During her time at MRMC, Perez has worked in the ED fi rst as a registrar and then as a patient care assistant and phlebotomist before becoming a registered nurse. She played a critical role during the Cerner implementation by coordinating and evaluating testing events across the health system. She earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Martin Methodist College and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in nursing at Austin Peay State University.

“Amanda is meticulous and hard working,” said Administrative Director Kathy Watts, MSN, RN, SANE-A. “Her wide range of skills and expertise, as well as her experience at MRMC, will ensure our ED patients continue to receive exceptional care and observation in a considerate and timely fashion. Please join me in congratulating her on this new role.”

On April 30, Maury Regional Spring Hill Physical Th erapy (PT) collaborated with the Spring Hill Chamber of Commerce to host a morning mixer.

Members of the greater Maury County community attended the event to learn more about the services off ered at the facility. Staff members were available to greet guests, answer questions and provide tours of the space, including the pediatric gym, treatment rooms, hand therapy area and AlterG treadmill.

“It was a pleasure getting to meet with the community and share valuable information about the benefi ts of physical therapy,” said Cindy Kington, PT, CHT, director of rehabilitation services. “Our physical therapy team did an excellent job of introducing themselves and the services we provide.”

LHC employees earn certifi cationsTh ree staff members at Lewis Health Center (LHC) recently earned new professional certifi cations in their respective areas, according to LHC Operations Director Hugh Bennett.

Jennifer Bobo, a phlebotomist at LHC, completed requirements for certifi cation as a medical laboratory technician through

American Medical Technologists. She has worked for Maury Regional Health (MRH) since 2014.

Catherine Horton, an imaging technologist at LHC, achieved certifi cation and registration in mammography through the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT). Horton has been employed with MRH for three years.

Darion Woodard, a radiology technologist at LHC, earned certifi cation in computed tomography (CT) from ARRT. She joined LHC in 2018.

Compliance employees earn certifi cationsRenee Barnett, Danielle Bruer and Leanne Walls in the Compliance Department recently earned certifi cations as community health coding and billing specialists from

the Association for Rural Health Professional Coding.

Barnett is a physician compliance auditor who has worked

with Maury Regional Health (MRH) since 2011. Bruer, a compliance specialist, has been with MRH for 16 years. Walls, supervisor for physician compliance, has been with MRH for 13 years.

Stokes leads webinarTammy Stokes, MSN, RN-BC, CHPN, director of palliative care for Maury Regional Health, led a webinar

in April titled “Palliative Care: Fulfi lling Big Needs in Rural Settings.”

Th e webinar was hosted by the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association and was part of the organization’s 2019 National RN Educational Webinar Series.

During the webinar, Stokes discussed essential elements of palliative care in rural communities and shared methods

of increasing patient and family access to hospice and palliative care through practice innovation and rural community partnerships.

MASH to take placeVolunteer Services at Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) will host the annual Maury Academy for Students in Health (MASH) program June 10–21.

High school students accepted into the MASH program earlier this year will spend two weeks on the MRMC campus observing the day-to-day responsibilities of health care professionals. Program highlights will include learning about professional nursing, orthopedics, physical therapy, pathology, cardiac services, labor and delivery, surgical services, emergency medical services and much more.

MMC provides sports screeningsMarshall Medical Center (MMC) continued its annual tradition of off ering free sports physicals for area middle and high school student athletes this spring.

Physicians on the MMC medical staff , providers from Lewisburg Family Practice and Lewisburg Pediatrics and other area partners joined MMC physical therapists, athletic trainers, nurses and staff members for the screenings on April 23 and May 1.

According to MMC Physical Medicine Director Jamie Davis, 510 student athletes were screened during the event, including 336 high school students and 174 middle school students.

LHC provides community serviceLewis Health Center (LHC) off ered free sports physicals for students entering middle and high school in Lewis County, according to LHC Physical Th erapy Director Heather Norris.

LHC providers, physical therapists and nurses conducted free screenings at Lewis County High School on May 1 and at Lewis County Middle School on May 3. A total of 212 student athletes participated in the free screenings.

Th e Research and Evidence-Based Practice Council hosted an evidence-based practice research fair in May at Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC).

“Th is research fair is an opportunity for nurses to showcase research that has been conducted on relevant evidence-based practice,” said Tracy Ferguson, RN, council chair. “Th e research that is presented has a positive outcome on patient care at MRMC by allowing staff to stay up to date on the most recent

practice.” Th is year marked the fi rst year that

the fair included posters from non-nursing departments.

First place winners in the fair’s two categories included:

• Evidence-Based Practice Review: Carly Burton, Ashley Lumpkins, Jackie Lowrey and Jessica Bowling for “When Should We Change IV Sites”

• Quality Improvement Project: Connie Lintz for “Changing the Way We Draw Blood”

Also, for the fi rst time, fair attendees selected a winner for a Viewer’s Choice Award, which went to Tina Johnson, Sloane Smith and Lisa Richardson for “Four Eyes on You are Better than Two.”

More than 150 people attended Wayne Medical Center’s (WMC) health fair in Collinwood on April 13, which featured free health screenings and information about health and wellness from WMC employees and community partners. Th e mobile medical unit also paid a visit.

PARKER’S PROJECT TO HOST THIRD ANNUAL FUNDRAISERParker’s Project will host its third annual evening of music Sunday, June 2, at Puckett’s in downtown Columbia. Th e event raises funds to provide books to babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Maury Regional Medical Center and is presented by Listerhill Credit Union.

Proceeds from Parker’s Project are donated to the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation to provide books to newborns in the NICU. Sondra and Cord Martin launched Parker’s Project following the birth of their son Parker as a way to honor his

caregivers and provide support to other NICU families. “Th e Martins have taken their own experience as parents of

a premature baby to help other families whose babies require an extensive stay in the NICU,” said Foundation Executive Director Joe Kilgore. “As educators, they know the power that reading to children has through voice recognition and stimulation. We are grateful to them and honored to partner with them on this meaningful endeavor.”

Th e doors to Puckett’s will open for the event Sunday, June 2, at 4:30 p.m. with music beginning at 5 p.m. Advance tickets are $20 per person plus a small processing fee. Children 13 and under are admitted free. Food and drinks may be purchased during the event. Tickets oft en sell out so interested parties are encouraged to register as early as possible.

LHC offers full services with new hoursEff ective May 26, Lewis Health Center (LHC) has new hours of operation, according to LHC Operations Director Hugh Bennett. New hours are Monday–Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 8 p.m.

For the convenience of patients, primary care laboratory and X-ray services are now available during all hours of operation at LHC. Hours for physical therapy and outpatient imaging remain unchanged with those services scheduled by appointment.

LHC is one of fi ve Federally Qualifi ed Health Center (FQHC) practices within the Maury Regional Health system. Visits for primary care and related services are as low as $20 for those who qualify for income-based discounts. LHC is located on West Main Street in Hohenwald.
