Imagine yourself sitting in the middle of a 3D movie theater and watching the 2012 Hollywood blockbuster movie ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’ showcasing the cast of Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Luis Guzman, Josh Hutcherson and Vanessa Hudgens.

The helicopter that the cast took in search of a mysterious island encounters a thunder storm. Wind blows and lightning strikes at the audience; the seats vibrate to simulate a freefall of the helicopter from the sky.

When the cast arrives at the mystery island, they marvel at the out-of-the-world scenery. An aromatic scent lingers in the theatre to assimilate the fresh air in the open field.

When creepy creatures such as centipedes and spiders appear, there are feather-like leg ticklers that brush against the audience’s legs.

And when the actor Dwayne throws an arrow at an eel, a rod suddenly emerges to poke the audience on their backs.

This is the Sentosa 4D AdventureLand’s 4D movie experience of ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’ that was launched in May 2013. The interactive 4D experience was developed by SimEx Iwerks under the license of Warner Bros.

Opened in 2005, the Sentosa 4D AdventureLand is Southeast Asia’s first four dimensional theatre. It is committed to bringing fun and exciting entertainment experiences to both the local and foreign visitors.

Results:Three sets of Christie Mirage HD10K-M projectors were deployed to create a projection of superb clarity, brightness and sharpness in Sentosa 4D AdventureLand’s 4D movie experience theater.

To refresh its product appeal, the attraction facility also opened two other experiences – ‘Extreme Log Ride’, the 4D motion–simulated ride in 2007, and ‘Desperados’, the first 4D interactive shootout game in Singapore in 2009.

Since 2005, the 4D movie experience theater featured the movie ‘Pirates’, starring the late Leslie Nielsen, the lead star of the ‘Naked Gun’ movie series. In its latest revamp and upgrading of facility, Sentosa 4D AdventureLand replaced ‘Pirates’ with ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’.

These moves of constantly enhancing the visitors’ experience at Sentosa 4D AdventureLand have not gone unrecognized. It has won the Asian Attractions Award for small attraction category from 2007 to 2011 consecutively.

“When you do the things right, the rewards are immeasurable,” shared Dato A Yogesvaran, managing director and CEO of Sentosa 4D AdventureLand. “Besides winning the Asian Attractions Award, we’ve also received positive feedback from our visitors and channel partners. We position ourselves as an adventure theme park venue in the tourism and leisure scene. Our aim is to realign our product attributes towards providing a holistic experience for our guests where they now get to enjoy a variety of shows and rides. While we

are still very much attuned to technology and 4D experiences, we are advocating the spirit of adventure, which we hope our visitors will embark on this journey with us.”

4D movies are gaining popularity among custom-built theaters at special venues such as theme parks and amusement parks around the world. They combine 3D movies with physical effects in the theatre that synchronize with the movie.

“Though the physical effects are the differentiators from normal movie experience, the 3D movie projected on the screen is still the dominant factor to create an engaging and immersive experience for the audience. The visual experience allows the audience’s imagination to run wild when the physical effects are introduced. We’ve an audience who shouted when the rod poke them on their back. We’ve an audience who raised their legs when the leg ticklers start to brush against them,” explained S K Selva, director, guest service & facilities, Sentosa

4D AdventureLand. “Therefore, the 3D projectors we chose for the 4D movie experience theater have to be able to meet our demanding criteria that require a long-lasting reliability under long hours of operation. They need to provide unsurpassed brightness and clarity for the audience to enjoy the sharpness of the images.”

Sentosa 4D AdventureLand has a long lasting working relationship with Christie. When it first launched its 4D movie ‘Pirates’ in 2006, it deployed Christie projectors. Following the replacement of the new 4D movie of ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’, Christie again came to its mind and it replaced the existing Christie projectors with Christie Mirage Ms’.

The 4D motion-simulated ‘Extreme Log Ride’, Sentosa 4D AdventureLand also deploys Christie Mirage M series projectors to transport the audience on a spectacular journey on a Super-Tree log through a mega timber processing plant.

“The Christie team is good at what they’re doing. We’ve been working with them for more than 10 years. They’re very professional. They understand our needs and expectations. When we revamp our 4D movie experience theater, they advise us to replace the existing projectors with newer models to deliver a more engaging experience for our audience,” elaborated Dato A Yogesvaran. “The outcome is simply amazing. You’ve to see it to believe it.”

Dato A Yogesvaran continued, “We run our show 365 days for about 10 hours daily. The Christie Mirage M projectors are

far easier to use and consume lesser energy. The lamps are also cheaper. The resolution of the 3D images from these HD projectors is also better and brighter than the old models. Overall, these projectors are more cost effective.”

To sum up his experience of using Christie projectors, Dato A Yogesvaran said, “We have been using Christie products all this while and will continue to use Christie products in the future too.”
