is Argentina’s Central Securities

Depository and plays a key role in the

The company acts as the IT Operations

and Support platform for the Argentine

stock market system and provides

secure purchase, sale, clearance

and custody services for the

Argentinean marketplace.

Caja de Valores also manages the

Electronic Securities Transfer System,

which processes transfer instructions

from various participants.

The challenge: secure the futureCaja de Valores had a large resource-intensive trading

portfolio, and concerns over the cost and stability of running

it over an ageing Bull Mainframe platform. In addition, users

were experiencing a quality of service degradation.

Re-writing existing apps was deemed too risky and costly,

as was a move to packaged applications that would need

needed expensive tailoring. Instead, Caja de Valores saw

the attractive economic benefits of a distributed and

more modern application platform to reduce its ongoing

operational costs.

Moving to a modern development environment

After the application re-platform project was

complete, Caja de Valores has seen a significant

improvement in availability and stability.

The new environment, under Visual COBOL,

provides faster transaction processing speeds,

with improvements as high as two to three times

their original levels. This has allowed overnight

batch processing and its associated costs to

be reduced.

Modernization has set Caja de Valores up

for the future: the company plans to integrate

existing COBOL business modules with

future developments using modern

programming languages.

Caja de Valores has also seen an increase in

developer efficiency – the team uses Visual

COBOL daily, and there’s excitement over its

new functionality and the future possibilities.
