In the space of just 12 hours on December 1, the city recorded an unprecedented 272mm of rainfall, leaving streets, offices and homes submerged in water and public transport links out of operation. Visteon’s teams worked tirelessly to continue critical customer programs, while placing the highest priority on the safety and welfare of employees. Rain intensified to such an extent that thousands of people in the city were left stranded, with approximately 3,500 trapped at Chennai airport for a short period. Visteon’s Technical and Services Center (VTSC) and manufacturing plant (VASI) in Chennai were adversely affected by the floods, causing management to instruct employees to stay at home from December 2, with shuttle vehicles arranged to transport people to safety away from the sites. With rapidlyrising floodwater, the ground floor, lower and upper basement levels of the VTSC facility were filled with more than three feet of water, covering staff vehicles and forcing the precautionary shut down of electricity supplies and equipment like IT servers and networks, telephones and UPS. During this period of time, leadership maintained communication with local and global teams, providing regular updates regarding the situation at both facilities with the support of teams in Pune. Flood waters damaged VTSC on the ground floor and basement levels In the following days, floodwater on the ground level of VTSC was drained and highcapacity pumps began the process of removing water from all basement areas. By December 5, a business continuity plan had been established to maintain Visteon’s businesscritical operations and customer programs in India. This included transporting employees based at VTSC to alternative locations around the country to continue working – including Pune, Bangalore and other, lessaffected areas in Chennai. In other cases, employees continued to support projects from home. Transport and temporary accommodation were arranged for VASI plant employees who successfully maintained the majority of shifts throughout the floods.
