Principal’s Message
A New Addition!
Those of you who attended our Love of Reading Night may have been present for the unveiling of our brand new Little Free Library! There are ~15,000 Little Free Libraries worldwide, about 40 in Arizona, and ~10 in Tucson. Ours will be registered with the Little Free Library organization soon! Our Little Free Library started as an idea of Mrs. Jill Wadsworth. It was designed, created, and installed by Larry Wilson (husband of our educational assistant/library clerk Mrs. Elaine Wilson). Mrs. Julie Fouts, our art teacher, did the lettering on the side, and our wonderful FFO paid for the project. Students may visit the Little Free Library when accompanied by an adult (parent or staff member). The idea is to take a book and leave a book. World Languages in CFSD
Part of preparing our students to be global citizens includes learning of language and culture.  As you know, families may opt for students to learn either Spanish (at any of our schools) or Chinese (currently at Sunrise Drive and Catalina Foothills High School). Furthermore, at our school, students may learn Spanish through our pull-out (communicative language taught in Spanish by a specialist teacher) or immersion program (core content and communicative language taught in Spanish by a classroom teacher).
Placement into middle school and high school Spanish in CFSD is based on language proficiency. All 5
th  and 8
th  grade students take an assessment in the spring to determine the
most appropriate placement for the following year. With our first cohort of immersion students about to enter middle school, we are very pleased to roll out our plan for their continued language learning. The pathway for our immersion students in middle school is entitled the Global Solutions Program.
 A point of clarification: There has been some confusion surrounding the immersion program, and whether or not it will continue in middle school. By definition, a partial “immersion” program means that at least 50% of the core content is delivered in the target language. Our Global Solutions Program has been specially designed for students who have been in an immersion program or who have a heritage learner background. While students will be fully immersed in the target language and learning content during this time, it does not meet the criteria for being called an “immersion program,” by definition, as students will not be learning 50% of their core content in Spanish.

Language learning and development for our immersion students is most definitely continuing through middle school. A team of teachers and administrators has been meeting for more than a year to design this pathway for students, and the resulting program is innovative and exciting! The team will consult with our 5
th  grade immersion students this spring for their input into specific
thematic units that will be of interest to them next year. For more information on theGlobal Solutions Program, please see later in this newsletter.

Global Solutions Program (Spanish, Grades 6-8)
The Global Solutions program serves students in grades 6-8 who have prior Spanish immersion experience or who have a heritage learner background. CFSD’s Global Solutions program embraces the tenets of New Global Citizens, a program that is dedicated to empowering students to become change agents and active problem solvers in their world by:
•  inspiring youth to be engaged global citizens; •  developing our future leaders’ 21
st  century skills and;
In the Global Solutions program students are engaged in learning content through the target language (Spanish). Students hone their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in Spanish while analyzing and solving local and global problems through a thematic approach (i.e., universal education, environmental sustainability, epidemics, extreme poverty & hunger, universal education, natural disasters, economic sustainability, conflict). The assessment framework is grounded in CFSD’s Deep Learning Proficiencies and ACTFL’s Proficiency Guidelines.
The program offers three courses each of which provides students with opportunities to become engaged, informed, and proactive citizens of the world. Course standards include the following:

office on 2/13. If you have not yet returned your forms, please
do so with the appropriate supporting documents ASAP. If you have moved, your packet will not  be forwarded to you. •Open enrollment families

Pursuant to A.R.S. §15-816 Catalina Foothills School District will begin its open enrollment
application procedures for the 2015-2016 school year on December 1, 2014. The law requires
every Arizona school district to follow a prescribed procedure and timetable for admitting out-of-
district transfer students and resident transfer students (those who live in the District but are
attending a school outside the attendance area of their residence). All students who currently
attend CFSD schools and reside in other districts, and all CFSD resident students who are
attending a different school than they would based on their residence, are impacted by this law.
We require that all open enrollment students apply for admission each year  .  Therefore, if your child is a resident transfer (open enrollment) student and you want him/her to
continue in that capacity, or if your child resides outside of the district and you want him/her to
continue to attend a CFSD school next year, please complete an application form between
 December 1, 2014, and February 28, 2015.

 process are on the district web site, www.cfsd16.org  (as of December 1, 2014), or
at the district office Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The district office is located

Although there is no limit on Pridelines, there is limited space within the yearbook. Therefore, we can only accommodate a finite number of Pridelines.

Camp Highlights
 
FIRST Lego League team and coaches for their
outstanding performance winning a state
championship. Board member John Bergman honored
the students and coaches with a certificate and Star
pin. The students are Alex Chiu, Wesley Chiu, Michael
Gross, Josh Tint and Jeremy Wang, Coach Charlotte
Ackerman, and Assistant Coach Nancy Hsiao.
Superintendent Kamerzell shared the following student
achievements.

•  The wrestling team placed 3rd as a team at the
sectional wrestling tournament on February 7.
Individual place winners were 1st place -
Jacob Davis, Zach Davis, and James Dick;
2nd place - Dawson Hand; 3rd place - Bryan
Ellwood and Mario Trujillo; and 4rd place -
Ryan Martz and Michael Orlandella. These
wrestlers will compete in the state wrestling
tournament. Their coach is Greg Bishop.
Robotics •  The CFHS VEX Robotics "B" team qualified for
the state tournament after competing in three
qualifying rounds at Imagine Prep in Apache
Junction on January 31. Additionally, CFHS
won the VEX Robotics Sportsmanship Award.

The Magic Flute. Nico will be one of the three
child spirits who lead Tamino around through
the opera. He will perform on Saturday night in
Phoenix on February 28, and in the
Sunday matinee performance in Tucson
on March 8.

Dr. Kamerzell made a presentation about the basics of
Arizona’s public K-12 school finance. She discussed
the equalization formula, expenditure budget
categories, the funding formula for maintenance and
operations, and District Additional Assistance (capital).
Dr. Kamerzell reported that AZ public K-12 school
finance is incredibly complicated, “formulas are one
thing; actual funding varies from year to year in spite of
what the law reads.”

and improve basic wrestling moves, techniques, and strategies.
 Veteran wrestlers will get the mat time and matches needed to
continue to improve their techniques and strategies as well.  All

at local freestyle tournaments in the Tucson area.
