PREFACE

In September 2016 The User was invited to contribute to ORAUM.The objective was to explore the precarious nature of circulation both in physical and digital format.139 characters

The format was loosely sketched out to evolve around two main counterpoints. One digital and one physical form.94 characters

The hashtag #vistawonderland001 and the physical distribution of 1000 instructions for a drawing in the form of a businesscard.109 characters

On the 28th October the first businesscards where distributed in Copenhagen and The User activated the hashtag on Twitter and Instagram. 116 characters

At this point the search engine had no hits on the hashtag. It was a blank space that could be filled with content.93 characters

APPENDIX TO MANIFESTO: “DIALOGUE”

Does The User require participation from an audience? -No. The content can exist without an active audience as any artwork can, but an active audience will have an opportunity to add meaning to the content and make it richer. This will increase the value of the work.

What kind of value are you talking about?-There are several plausible outcomes that an active audience can add: in the first instance the intellectual value, an exchange of thought. Voicing an opinion will aid The User in formation of new thought. Secondly the acknowledgement that an active audience would bring

to the work could inspire The User to make more. Third outcome could be circulation or share value. By that I mean the opportunity to expand the audience. This could then eventually lead to a direct or indirect monetary value.

Does that mean that you expect to make money from this project?-Well, not directly. To borrow an expression from the finance world, this project is all about venture capital, albeit the investments are primarily in the form of time and skills as opposed to money, and contributions are made by the artist and a few collaborators. This form of financing is the foundation for most artistic practices. Monetary income to provide bread and

butter are most likely to come from other sources until the audience is aquired and with that the skills to circulate the work.

What are your artistic aspirations for this project?- This is an imitation, an image of sort. I can only leave it in plain sight and observe what becomes of it and respond to that.

In the manifest you mention the word play. What do you mean by play, is it a game to you?-The User suppose there is an element of game playing in this process, but it is also more in the sense of playing instruments or tools. In the sense of learning by doing and especially by failing to make full use

of the potential.

Is there a strategy?-The User is currently exploring tools for circulation and therefore the strategy was not fixed in advance. For instance in relation to the idea of the audience. The User knows that there are many possibilities for optimization of online trafic flow, getting followers etc. But at the moment the examination is a slow process of discovery.

Are you a secret?-The identity behind, or next to, User_5884499 has never been a secret it is just concealed slightly. The displacement of identity is one of the core qualities of

The User project. It is part of the game.

Can you talk a bit about the title “Some spaces are only good for sunrises”?-Isn’t it quite obvious? I mean, at least it is to me. Haven’t we all shared or published something that completely fell on the ground because the audience, space or the situation didn’t fit to the content. Be it at a family dinner or online. Sometimes the compulsion to share or publish makes you uncritical of the forum you are in and then the potential exchange value of that content is completely lost. Some spaces are only good for sunrises and cats and that is perfectly ok. Have you considered that your work

is overly obscured to the point of impenetrable?-The User builds riddles and labyrinths and not everybody is interested in that. And because these are not formalized they don’t often perform well as an image of a riddle or labyrinth and that makes them harder to engage with. They change; they are in process, unfixed.

Where is The User now?-The short answer is: where you are! In circulation. The long answer would require a preliminary discussion about space theory.

DOCUMENTATIONDocumentation plays an important part in todays business, research or artistic practice. To some extend one could argue that the documentation of a work play a more important role than the work itself. There are many opinions about why that is and how it influences our thinking. The User has experienced how the lines between spheres of work and play are blurred and the role of documentation of events and experiences taking over.

One of the important questions that this raises concern our ability to perceive impressions and interpret information and maybe more importantly our ability to trust our ability to form opinion and make conclusions without the mediation of documentation.

The User is concerned about these issues but acknowledges the status quo. The following pages are a collection of the documentation from the past three months suitable for forensic scrutiny.

The word documentation has unfortunate connotations of unbiased and true. Therefore The User finds it important to point out to the reader that all reports and documentation are works of fiction and interpretation. This of course includes what you are reading right now.

THE ETERNAL RETURNWhat are the thoughts behind The recipe/business card?- Quite often I will read or hear a lot of words that I want to agree on or understand, but the the words form an impenetrable knot that does not allow for full comprehension. To understand the meaning of something it is necessary to play along with the rules or syntax of that which is being communicated but at some point you have to test your understanding of it by placing it in a different context. In this case I made a recipe for a drawing. A set of rules that could allow me to describe my understanding or interpretation of the words and enable me to relate them back into the world. If you can draw something and agree with others that your drawing describes what you just read then maybe you have understood the principle In my experience people are often too willing to settle for the ability to recite that which they have read or been told and end up mistaking this ability to recite for knowledge.

THE SEARCH ENGINEWhen you searched the web for #vistawonderland001 there were no results before 27th October 2016. This void is now filled.

Most of the images that come up are directly related to the project. However there is quite a few seemingly unrelated points of association that has been generated. It is unclear at this point how these images have been connected to Vista Wonderland.

The User had expected this void to be filled by participants and their drawings of the eternal return. This has not happened yet as seen on this screenshot from December 21st. The images without direct connection to the project has been blurred.

THE GIFVista Wonderland is about immitating serious business. Businesses provide services that have high usevalue, you want to pay for it. Bussinesses help you make more, be more, gain more. To gain more you have to invest something.

You can get help in many languages to optimize yourself.

This GIF “Some Help” had 23 views in 8 weeks. In comparisson a GIF “A Lament” which contained an image of a cloud and mentions sunrise in the heading had 39 views in 6 weeks. And “Monday Soliloquy” with its form and colour had 35 views in 5 weeks.

The question here concerns reading speed and audience expectations.

INTERACTION

October 27th 2016An exchange of thought begins on Twitter. The Pyrate Queen and The User engages in a written verbal exchange that ends the 9th November. The Pyrate Queen comments on the lenght of the tag #vistawonderland001 and encourages The User to make a form of treassure map to the project. The full conversation follows on the next page.

THE MERCHANDISE

The User is very inspired by the phenomena of merchandise and how companies, musicians, politicians etc. use these deceptively simple items to create circulation value, simply by being present in ordinary objects like mugs, key rings and mouse matts.

As part of Vista Wonderland The User produced a video with examples of how ORAUM could create merchandise from the different contributions made to the platform. This would bring a physical presence to ORAUM out of the digital sphere.

The User produced some of this proposed merchandise for the event “Some Spaces Are Only Good For Sunrises”, A mug representing each of the four rooms.

The items was for sale at the event with the possibility for print on demand in case of high interest.

SOME SPACES ARE ONLY GOOD FOR SUNRISES

In a room in Aarhus a group of people came together to engage with the products of The User.

The event was hosted by ORAUM, who had recieved the merchandise by post and inserted these into the space with very little direction from The User.

After the event User_5884499 recieved a video of the room and some footage of the drawings made by the participants.

Items inserted in the room:A banner, four cups, some business cards and thank you cards. A video and a sound.

REFLECTION

The User is not confined to the nostalgic image of an artist. A studio with four walls, a skylight, a canvas and a bottle of cheap cherry wine. In stead The User is more often confined to the more metaphysical restraints of documentation, websites and PDF’s.

This is not a problem in it self, it is an opportunity to expand and make work about. The problem occurs if one is uncritical about these tools in the representation of work that requires physical presence. If works of art is confined to the sphere of representation and documentation. The representation of art then becomes the interface or fault line between the works and the audience. An impenetrable veil of code that further abstracts the idea.

The User will continue to examine the reality of the interface and challenge the platforms of word and images and seek to find voids to fill with content and meaning.

About Interface Media ConsultingInterface media consulting is an entirely fictional construction. Any resemblance to actual companies and services is purely coincedental. The logo was developed by User_5884499 to ad yet another layer of constructed fiction onto the project. The logo depicts a stylised silouette of a humanoid face and plays on the dual meanings of INTERFACE as being in between phazes (faces) in computer development language. More commonly we use the word interface as about the visible part of the program, the part a user and not a developer would see.
