A Benevolent Church

What does it mean to be a benevolent church? Benevolence can be defined as: the desire to do good for others; an act of kindness; or a generous gift.

This concept of doing good to others is found throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament. In the Old Testament, we find that taking care of the poor – both for the Jewish and other communities – was part of the Law of Moses. These laws emphasized God’s place in Jewish life as their savior and redeemer, setting them apart from the nations around them. In that culture, the way the Jews treated the poor reflected or indicated the individual’s or nation’s attitude toward God, and His place in their lives.

In the New Testament, we find this concept of wanting to help our Christian family and our community comes from the teaching of Jesus: He gave us examples of this through the Parable of the Good Samaritan and the story of the Rich Young Ruler. We find the desire to do good to others comes from a heart that has truly experienced God’s redemption. God’s grace has been given to us through the gift of Jesus Christ who gave himself up for us.

Here at Baker Heights we are so blessed to have many members who have the desire to do good for others. We have dedicated men who run our Assistance Ministry for those in our family who may have financial needs. We also have members who provide rides to the doctor, rehab and church services. There are deacons who look after our elderly, homebound members and widows. We have members who routinely call and visit our homebound and our members who are in the hospital. Our church family also provides a pantry for our members and their family who are in need of food, as well as a community pantry for those in our neighborhood who may need a little help.

As a family here at Baker Heights, you have met every challenge the elders have put before you in dealing with the Baker Heights family, the needs of our community, and those of our mission programs. We are so thankful that you, as a family of God, do truly understand the concept of doing good to others and showing your love for our God and for each other.

If you, as a part of this family, have not involved yourself in any of these areas of benevolence, we encourage you to find your niche here in God’s family at Baker Heights! Remember that we are told to show our love to God in deed and truth and not just in our words. 1 John 3:16-18
