At the heart of Pembrokeshire, themost western county in Wales, lies Haverfordwest, a lively markettown located on the RiverCleddau which flows through itscentre. During the reign ofElizabeth I, Haverfordwest wasregarded as the second largestport in Wales due to its wealth ofexports which included coal, slate, butter, cereals, hides andwool.

Housed within the walls of theimpressive Norman castle is the

town’s Museum and Art Gallerywhich regularly featuresexhibitions and tells the story ofHaverfordwest and thesurrounding area.

Haverfordwest is the ideal placeto stay for the visitor wanting totour Pembrokeshire and explorethe surrounding villages andcountryside. Nearby is thecove-like village of Little Havenwhich lies virtually alongsideBroad Haven with its wide sweepof golden sand.

This is quite a contrast to thenorth of the county where thescenery becomes more rugged.

Regardless of where you staythere can be few better placesthan Haverfordwest to use as yourbase when in Pembrokeshire.

Idyllically set on the banks of theriver estuary is the medievaltown of Pembroke, with its his-toric showpiece, the castle, birthplace of Henry Tudor, fatherto the infamous Henry VIII andgrandfather of Elizabeth I.

This mighty 13th century fortressis largely intact, and its endlesspassages, tunnels and stairwaysare great fun to explore. In addi-

tion there are fascinating exhibi-tions, which tell the tale of thecastle’s history from the arrival ofthe Normans to the present day. Also on site there is a gift shop, brass rubbing centre and asnackbar. In addition there arelively guided tours every day dur-ing the summer season.

The castle has a long and fasci-nating history, for it was in 1093

that Arnulf de Montgomery, theNorman invader, built a “slenderfortress of stake and turf”, at theend of the promontory. The castlebecame the centre of themedieval earldom of Pembroke, expanding over the next two cen-turies to the medieval stone struc-ture we see today.

The early thirteenth century keepis an outstanding architecturalfeature. Views from the top of thismassive cylindrical tower aretremendous and show the castle’snatural defensive position. Thiskeep was built by WilliamMarshall, Earl of Pembroke, oneof the outstanding individuals ofhis age. His successors over thenext two centuries would com-plete the stone castle.

The afore-mentioned Henry Tudor,Earl of Richmond, who laterbecame Henry VII, founder of theTudor Dynasty. During the trou-bled reign of King Charles I, thecastle was held firstly for parlia-ment and then for the King as thesympathies of its commandersaltered. In the later stages of this

grim struggle, the beseigingforces were commanded by OliverCromwell himself.

Today Pembroke Castle is ownedand managed by a privatecharitable trust, which has theresponsibility of running the sitefor the enjoyment of the visitingpublic. For more Information go towww.pembrokecastle.co.uk
